This red-haired beauty was crowned Miss Missouri last week, and is set to take part in the Miss America contest tonight, in the hopes she'll be crowned the first openly gay winner.

Erin is a college graduate, with a degree in legal studies. She also owns a boutique clothing shop, Rachel’s Grove in St. Louis, with her mum, aunt and sister.

When asked about her win, Erin said "I'm on cloud nine really just to be Miss Missouri. I don't know that I intended to be the first gay contestant but I am. So I'm very excited about it.”

Erin, who was raised on a farm, spoke to the Associated Press ahead of the competition, which started earlier this week.

"I knew going in that I had the opportunity to make history. Now I get to be more visible to the community and meet more people."

The Miss America competition will air this evening in the United States, and we are TEAM MISSOURI!

While we may have been the first country to legalise same-sex marriage by popular vote, that doesn't mean every member of the Irish LGBT community feels wholly content with their place in Irish society.

And with the Dublin Pride Festival kicking off next week, National Coordinator of the Helpline, Paula Fagan, confirmed that the LBGT Helpline can actually expect a surge in the number of calls placed by members of the Irish public.

Speaking at the launch of the helpline’s partnership with eir this week, Paula explained that the festival can stir up a variety of emotions from members of the LGBT community and their family members.

“For most people, Pride is a time of celebration and fun but, for many, it can also be a time when they feel in need of support,” she said as she explained that calls can quadruple during this time of the year.

“For people who are questioning their sexuality or gender identity or feeling anxious about coming out, Pride season can bring these feelings to the fore,” she added.

While explaining that Pride season seeks to shine a spotlight on the LGBT community, Paula acknowledged that this can ultimately have a domino effect.

“For family-members and friends of LGBT people, Pride can be the time for them to seek additional information about LGBT issues, or to reach out for support around their or a loved one’s LGBT identity.”

As part of ‘It’s Good to Talk’, the LGBT Helpline and eir will have a highly-visible presence in the Dublin Pride Parade on 25th June.

With a large tent at the Pride Village and Helpline volunteers  on hand to provide emotional support and information to anyone who needs it, Pride Festival is ALL about the love.

Dublin Pride Festival is kicking off on June 22 and running until June 26.

There was major controversy at the end of last year when she won her Glamour Award, with people fighting to say she didn't deserve it.

And since then, Caitlyn has been nominated for numerous other awards including the Arthur Ashe Courage Award and the Teen Choice Award for Social Media Queen.

But it doesn't stop there as Cait as been nominated for yet another award today; The GLAAD Media Award.

Her show I Am Cait is in the running along with Adam Lambert's new album and Carol, the American LGBT media advocacy organisation announced today.

GLAAD announced a total of 101 nominations English and Spanish nominations and Caitlyn was recognised for her reality show and the Diane Sawyer interview she did last year.

The award ceremony will be held in LA on April 2, but we're pretty confident she'll come out on top.

Liam Payne is definitely hitting back at his critics in his newest photoshoot.

The One Direction star did a rare solo shoot for gay magazine Attitude, framing himself once and for all as an LGBT ally. The new issue comes out tomorrow, and will have not one but two collectible covers.

"I'm on the cover of the new issue of @AttitudeMag," the singer wrote on Twitter today, shortly before the covers were released.

"Can't wait for you all to see the shoot!"

Liam came under fire last month when comments he made during a One Direction concert led to allegations of homophobia on Twitter.

Speaking to the crowd during a gig in Columbus, Ohio, Liam mentioned a song which was "about trying to find that number one woman of your life," something he said only the men in the crowd would understand.

He was later forced to set the record straight, telling his 20.9m Twitter followers that he was "in no way shape or form homophobic" and that he had not meant to "offend people."

Last week Liam's bandmate Harry also made a gesture of support to the LGBT community, draping a Pride flag over his shoulders during a New York gig.

Harry has always been vocal in support of his gay fans, with positive results.

After he publicly recorded a message of support for London's Lesbian and Gay Switchboard, fans rallied to raise over €15,000 for the charity in honour of the singer's 21st birthday back in February.

President Obama has referred to Caitlyn Jenner in a speech that was recorded for Logo’s Trailblazer Honors in New York City.

Logo is a television network that celebrates one-of-a-kind personalities and unconventional stories. Their aim is to achieve this “all through a mix of original and acquired entertainment that’s outrageous, smart, and inclusive.”

The Trailblazer Honors ceremony is to honour LGBT people around the world and the victims of those who have suffered from homophobic abuse.  The ceremony, which airs tomorrow, will also host celebrity speakers including Miley Cyrus, Kelly Osbourne, Sir Ian McKellan, Martin Luther King III, and more.

In his speech President Obama said that “tonight is a chance to celebrate, not just ten years of Logo, but ten years of extraordinary progress for our country.

“When this network aired its first show, gay marriage was a political wedge issue used to divide us. Today the majority of Americans live in states where they can get married, no matter who they love.

“And all you have to do is look at this month’s cover of Vanity Fair to see how America is more accepting of people for who they truly are,” he said referring to Ms Jenner's recent issue of the magazine.

Since Caitlyn’s transition, she has become an icon for transgender people around the world. With all eyes on her, she has become the most famous person to openly undergo the gender transition process in the public eye.

President Obama was in the middle of giving a speech honouring LGBTQ Pride Month when he was heckled by a member of the crowd.

The US President tried to ask the heckler to stop interrupting him and when the person wouldn’t listen Obama pointed out, “you’re in my house,” which prompted a big cheer from the crowd.

The audience was clearly on Obama’s side throughout the altercation as they booed the heckler and began a chant, shouting “O-bam-a.”

The President even declared that, “As a general rule I am just fine with a few hecklers… But not when I’m up in the house,” which again warranted a huge laugh from the crowd and a slap on the back from Vice President, Joe Biden.

Following the incident, an immigration group claimed that the protestor was an undocumented transgender who advocates for LGBTQ immigrants. The group says that LGBTQ immigrants are often excluded from the immigration debate.

While Obama has received his fair share of hecklers in his time, it is a rare occurrence in the White House. As he said, if the guests are “eating the hors d’oeuvres and drinking the booze,” they are usually expected to be respectful and listen.

The Marriage Equality referendum is just weeks away, and some VERY high-profile names have just gotten on board the Yes campaign. Except we do need to remind a certain turkey that LGBT doesn't stand for Less Gay Byrne on Telly…

If you've ever wondered what a phone conversation between Dustin and Bosco might play out like, then your question has finally been answered.

We love this sweet video from Straight Up For Equality (and the Poultry Party, of course).

The Marriage Equality referendum takes place on May 22nd. While it's expected the turnout from younger voters will be high, one of the main focuses of the "Yes" campaign at the moment is encouraging young voters to talk to older members of their family about what a Yes vote means for them.

This campaign video from LGBT group BeLonG To encourages voters to do the best they can to ensure their mam, dad, granny or grandad comes along with them to the polling station on voting day.

Take a look… and keep your eyes peeled for a few celebrity cameos, too.

Voting is one of those things that many of us twenty-somethings can take or leave. Sure, it’s great to know we CAN cast a vote, but lots of us simply don’t bother, especially when it comes to smaller things like local elections.

That’s why, for the past few weeks, your Facebook and Twitter timelines have no doubt been full of reminders to get registered by November 25th, which is the closing date to be listed on the 2015 register of electors.

Next spring, one of Ireland’s most important referendums will take place – the vote for marriage equality in Ireland. It’s been a long road for Ireland’s LGBT community and this is one of the biggest steps the country has taken so far.

The government does legally recognise same-sex civil unions for couples who have chosen to get married in other countries, but it’s currently not an option for gay and lesbian couples to marry on Irish soil.

Even if you aren’t up to date with voter turnout figures in Ireland, you can probably guess (correctly) that our over 65’s vote more than any other age group. But in a referendum like this one, it’s Ireland’s younger adults that need to stand up and make their voice heard.

Recent statistics show that 30% of Ireland’s 18 – 25 year olds are not even registered to vote. Worse again, when you look at the 18 – 21 year old age group, just 43% of them are on the register. For something that is so simple to do – it’s a matter of filling out a form, getting it stamped and sending it off – it’s slightly disheartening that the numbers are as low as they are.

One of the most well-known Irish advocates for LGBT equality is Rory O’Neill, a.k.a. drag queen Panti Bliss. His “Noble Call” speech brought Ireland’s equality journey to a global stage earlier this year, when he spoke beautifully on stage at the Abbey Theatre about oppression and homophobia.

The video soon went viral, sparking huge debate about this country’s attitudes to homosexuality.

This referendum, as well as making Ireland a more equal place for everyone, is also our way of showing the rest of the world that we are becoming more modern and open and considerate. What a pity it would be if the result was skewed simply because too many of us had failed to register on time.

Maybe you’re an LGBT person, maybe your best friend is, or your brother or sister. Maybe the person sitting next to you right now is. Whoever this referendum affects in your life, be it everyone you know or just one or two people, it’s important that we don’t let our laziness get in the way of a fair vote.

If you’re not registered make sure you fill out that form this week and get yourself on the list. If you’re registered in your hometown but are living elsewhere in Ireland, it’s equally important to note your change of address so that you can vote on the day. Check the register here, download the forms, and make sure your vote for change is counted!

Lorde has told her fans to pucker up for same-sex church members who plan to picket outside her concert this Friday.

It seems members of the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) have beef with the Kiwi singer for being in favour of LGBT rights.

The outspoken singer  recently responded to a lesbian jab about her friendship with Taylor Swift. When a radio show host joked about the two being “‘Ellen’ together,” Lorde replied by asking the interviewer, “Is there something wrong with lesbians? Is that what you’re trying to say?”

In response to news of the protest, the Royals singer tweeted, “Hahaha omg just found out the westboro baptist church are going to picket my show in Kansas City,” telling concert-goers, “Everyone wear rainbow clothing to that show.”

Lorde added in another post, “Everyone try to kiss church members who are the same sex as you they will so love it.”

While the tweets have since been removed, the message to Lordes fans is already out there, which could spell big trouble at the Kansas City concert.

Star of Juno and Inception, Ellen Page gave a deeply inspirational speech at the “Time to THRIVE” conference organised by the group Human Rights Campaign held in Las Vegas.

During her speech, which you can watch here, Ellen described her own difficulty with accepting her sexuality describing herself as: “tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission.”

Continuing on, Ellen told the audience of her wish to help others who may be going through what she went through: “I am gay … maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time … I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.”

Ellen also spoke about the bullying endured by schoolchildren and her own suffering at the hands of media scrutiny.

Truly inspirational, well done Ellen!
