Rumour has swirled ever since Zayn Malik unexpectedly departed the band in the spring.

This evening, and despite notching up a huge hit in Drag Me Down – their first release as a foursome – it seems that One Direction will indeed go their separate ways in March of next year.

The decision was seemingly made during crunch talks in London last weekend.

However, The Sun, which is claiming an exclusive on the story, also says fans should not lose all hope: the guys intend on making more music together some time again in the future – albeit after they've pursued solo material and projects over the course of at least a year.

A source close to the boyband told the newspaper: "The guys have been together for five years, which is an incredible run for any boyband.

"They fully deserve to have at least a year to work on their own projects. There is absolutely no bad blood between them and they are all 100 percent behind the decision."

The source added: "They fully intend to get back together at some time in the future."

Liam, Niall, Harry and Louis have several high-profile gigs lined up for the rest of the year – performances which they will honour. The band will furthermore regroup after Christmas to polish off their various contractual commitments.

The Sun also says that the 1D time-out has nothing to do with Mr Malik's departure.

"This was the plan with or without Zayn," the insider revealed. "In fact, the band have been making amazing music and been incredibly happy without Zayn.

"Of course they would have preferred that he had stayed in the band, but they would have taken this extended hiatus even if he hadn’t left."

The band was formed on the UK version of The X Factor in 2010. Their debut studio album Up All Night was released in November 2011 and topped the charts in 16 countries.

Their forthcoming fifth album – from which Drag Me Down is taken – will be unveiled later this year, and it had been expected that One Direction would embark on an arena tour in 2016 to promote the release.

As part of their current On The Road Again tour, they play three live dates in Dublin in mid-October, before moving to Belfast on October 20.

Uh oh, Liam Payne got himself in a bit of trouble and he has taken to Twitter to explain himself. He especially wants to make one thing clear, that he is not a homophobe.

During a concert recently, Liam angered several of his fans when he was introducing the One Direction song Girl Almighty. He addressed the crowd saying "This is my favourite song off the last album, and it is about trying to find that No.1 woman of your life."

"Which none of you can relate to, 'cause you are girls. Except for the boys in here – you know what I'm talking about."

Following this comment, a lot of people were seriously unhappy accusing Liam of disregarding same-sex couples and with several people calling him a homophobe.

Liam then tweeted last night in an attempt to set the record straight and appease his angry fans. "I am in no way shape or form homophobic that's a ridiculous thing to say and I'm not here to offend people so take it as you will."

The singer tried his best to defend himself but he was clearly put out by the whole thing as he tweeted "crap end to a good day"

Liam described that he tries his best to keep his fans happy but some of them just want to focus on the negatives. "So annoying trying your hardest to amke people happy in a show and you think about all the notes u tried to hit higher or a little sweeter."

He also went on to tweet his 20.8 million followers saying that some people take things too literally now a days.

Liam's band mates have not yet taken to Twitter to defend him or set the record straight.

Could the One Direction lads be set to welcome TWO new babies?

Louis Tomlinson became the first band member to enter impending fatherhood when it was revealed last month that his former flame Briana Jungwirth was expecting their child. Now, Louis' bandmate Liam Payne has spoken about his own desires to start a family… but don't worry, we could be waiting a while.

This week Liam dished some gossip on his own family plans while chatting about Louis' new arrival. "I wanna have kids when, you know, I have the time but at the moment, life's so busy and I wouldn't want to commit to something like that when I haven't got the necessary time for it yet," the 21-year-old told Magic Radio.

Liam has been in a relationship with Sophia Smith for the last two years, and has made no secret of his love and commitment, but it seems he's not ready to take any big steps just yet.

"That's my careful planning ahead," he joked. "But I'm more, well I'm always known as the dad of One Direction so I'm, you know, trying to plan life carefully."

Just yesterday Louis himself spoke about his baby news during the band's appearance on Good Morning America while promoting their new single, Drag Me Down. "I'm buzzing," he told host Michael Strahan.

First Louis becoming a dad, now Liam talking about it… could Harry and Niall be next to follow suit?

There have been weeks of radio silence, but we've finally had not one but two confirmations of Louis Tomlinson's baby news… from the One Direction lads themselves.

After Liam Payne addressed the rumours during a radio interview yesterday, Louis himself spoke out today about his upcoming arrival with stylist Briana Jungwirth.

The 1D lads appeared on Good Morning America just hours ago to promote their new single Drag Me Down, and the first order of business during their post-show interview was a discussion about the expectant pop star's big news.

"Louis, from one father to another I want to congratulate you on your upcoming fatherhood. So how are you feeling?" GMA host Michael Strahan asked the 23-year-old singer. Not seeming too fazed by the question, Louis responded with a genuine "Thank you," adding, "Obviously it's a very exciting time. So, eh, I'm buzzing."

Speaking on Magic Radio yesterday, Louis' bandmate Liam said he had initially been "shocked" by the news, but that Louis was taking it all in his stride. "Well, obviously I was a bit shocked but he's taken super well to it," Liam revealed.

"He's very excited with what's going on with him at the moment and I feel that stuff like that happens sometimes. He's taking it very seriously," Liam continued. Although they are no longer in a relationship, Louis and Los Angeles-based stylist, Briana Jungwirth, 23, are on good terms ahead of their baby's arrival early next year.

The duo began dating briefly in May, just weeks after Louis broke up with his girlfriend of four years, Eleanor Calder.

First Louis… will Briana (or Eleanor) be the next to speak out?

Not too long ago 1D fans around the world were thrown into complete chaos with the news that member Louis Tomlinson was going to become a dad.

Since the news broke that L.A based stylist Briana Jungwirth was pregnant with the pop star’s child, there has yet to be a comment from the 23-year old himself.

Now band mate Liam Payne has spoken out on his friend’s impending fatherhood.

Speaking with Magic Radio Liam said that when he found out about the news he was “shocked”.

"Well, obviously I was a bit shocked but he's taken super well to it."

According to Liam, Briana is a “lovely girl” and Louis is “very excited” about the baby. Last month Briana’s father confirmed the pregnancy news but so far none of the band members have commented on Briana and the baby.

"He's very excited with what's going on with him at the moment and I feel that stuff like that happens sometimes. He's taking it very seriously,” Liam, 22, has said.

He was also asked about Zayn Malik’s exit and his new record deal with the RCA label.

Liam admitted that while hasn’t spoken to Zayn recently as he’s “off doing is own thing”.

He did explain that leaving a band is a very difficult decision:

"It is a difficult thing to leave the band, but his heart wasn't in it and you have to go with your heart and say I can't do this any more.”

He did say he is looking forward to hearing Zayn’s new music, saying:  "I'm dead excited to hear some of his stuff. I did a lot of work with him in the studio when he was in the band.”

Liam himself has written songs for Cheryl Fernandez- Versini and spent time in the recording studio with Pharell Williams but said that he won’t be going out solo any time soon.

“I love being in the band. I don't know if I could do it by myself now, it's all too comfortable."

One Direction’s fans made Twitter absolutely explode with rumours of Liam getting engaged to his girlfriend, Sophia Smith.

Proving once again that they are the most hard core fans, they have even managed to get #SophiamIsEngaged trending worldwide.

But could there be any truth to the rumours?

Sadly, it appears that the commotion was stemmed only from excited fans.

Liam took to Twitter to show that he at least found all the tweets comical.  He even retweeted his favourite fan tweet from the frenzy.

Since the 21-year-old shot down the rumours, other 1D fans seem to be having a meltdown over the fact that people started these rumours in the first place.

Liam also proved this week that he is not afraid to speak his mind as he openly slammed Naughty Boy during the band’s performance in Vancouver.

Mr Payne read out a sign that an audience member was holding up that bashed the music producer that has caused so much friction between Zayn and the rest of the band.

It hasn't been the best year for the love lives of the One Direction lads, but we're hoping one couple can survive the distance.

Back in March, Zayn Malik quit the band following allegations he had cheated on his fiancée Perrie Edwards with a fan in Thailand, while just a week beforehand, Louis Tomlinson called his quits with his girlfriend of four years, Eleanor Calder.

Showing he's not about to let all the negativity get him down, Liam Payne recorded a brilliant video with his longtime girlfriend Sophia Smith last night, taking off the iconic Friends scene in which Rachel tells Ross they are "SO OVER."

We have to say, Liam's Ross Gellar impersonation is pretty damn impressive…

I love this app aha #friends #ross #Rachel

Liam and Sophia have clearly been making the most of their free time together, as One Direction enjoy a break from touring for a few weeks.

The band finished up the Australian and Asian legs of their On The Run tour last month, and have a clear schedule until kicking off the first of their European gigs next month.

Over the last week, the loved-up couple have been holidaying in the south of France, where they checked out the Formula One Grand Prix in Monaco and even enjoyed a short cruise with Topshop boss Sir Philip Green and Spice Girls star Geri Halliwell.

Liam has made no secret of how smitten he still is with Sophia, often taking to social media to let her know he misses her when the pair are not together:

We reckon these two are in it for the long haul.

It's been almost two months since Zayn Malik's shock exit from One Direction, and while the band seem set on continuing as a foursome, many have have still been waiting for an explanation for Zayn's decision to quit the group.

Many speculated that his relationship with Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards was one of the main reasons he said goodbye to the band, especially given the fact that Zayn had abandoned the 1D world tour to fly home to the UK to Perrie following allegations he had cheated on her with a fan in Thailand.

Now, Zayn's former bandmate Liam Payne has confirmed that Perrie did indeed have a lot to do with Zayn's decision.

"Sometimes you have to move on because you're not enjoying what you're doing as much as you used to," Liam told London's Capital Radio this morning.

"He wanted to spend time with his family and his missus. That's cool with us."

In an official statement back in March, Zayn said he simply wanted "to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight."

Since leaving the band, Zayn and his fiancée Perrie seem closer than ever, sharing lots of happy snaps and funny videos with fans via Instagram:

If you previously thought you had a chance at romance with One Direction's Liam Payne, think again. The heartthrob has been in a relationship with girlfriend Sophia Smith for two years now, and according to Heat, the pair are about to get much more serious.

Heat claimed Liam was spotted being picked up from his hotel and driven to a celebrity wedding planners house in LA.

Okay but before you start digging into a huge tub of ice cream and listening to Gotta Be You, a representative for Liam told Mirror Celeb that the rumours about him driving to the home of Mindy Weiss are in fact not true.

"This is a completely fabricated story by Heat Magazine. Liam has not met with any wedding planners," they said.

Phew! Everybody relax.

Despite the wedding rumours being false, Liam has raised speculation that the pair are living together after tweeting: "@robdyrdek watching fantasy factory so amazing. My girlfriend isn't gunna be happy when she gets home and there's a foam pit in the lounge".

We bet he makes her tea and pancakes every morning… adorable, yet a little dream crushing at the same time.

She is one lucky lady.

It appears that some of the remaining One Direction members needed a light-hearted distraction from all of the Zayn drama that has been going on lately.

What better way to do this than to prank your best friend?

Liam Payne took to Instagram recently to share a prank that himself and Louis played on Niall.

Beginning with a quote which read: "There is fun to be done!", Liam then posted three pictures of Niall's Range Rover covered in random objects and LOTS of toilet paper.

He captioned the first one: "Oh no Niall," while the second one said "Oh no Niall !!"

Louis can be seen in two of the photos, showing that his relationship with Liam has not been affected by recent Twitter drama.

We're sure Niall saw the funny side, but maybe didn't go for a drive for quite a while.

Famed for teenpop classics such as Live While We’re Young, and What Makes You Beautiful – One Direction’s Liam Payne has made a surprising revelation about the band’s forthcoming album.

“The album is coming together really well actually,” he told Capital FM earlier this week. “It’s a bit Oasis almost – which is ace. Love that.”

Liam Payne says the new album will nod to Oasis

And as well as drawing on the musical talents of Liam and Noel Gallagher, Mr Payne added that they’re also finding inspiration in Ed Sheeran: “The songs have come out a bit more chilled because we want this to be a long-lasting album that you just can listen to anytime,” he explained.

“You know with Ed’s album you can listen to it anytime – anytime you throw on an Ed song it always makes sense. So we’re trying to do that.”

The former X Factor contestants are currently working with writer and producer Jamie Scott – the man behind the likes of Story Of My Life – and have been working hard in the studio to get their fifth album together; their first offering since Zayn Malik departed last month.

Noel Gallagher wrote many of Oasis's hits

Indeed, in the midst of a hectic touring schedule, One Direction’s management are pushing to get the finished produce out there before the end of the year. Although a release date has yet to announced, it is rumoured that late November has already been earmarked.

It's been almost two weeks since Zayn Malik made the shock decision to quit One Direction for good, and his former bandmates are finally speaking out.

Zayn sent millions of 1D fangirls into meltdown when he announced his exit from the band, just days after he had quit the Asian leg of their tour to fly home to the UK to make peace with his fiancée Perrie Edwards.

Niall, Harry, Liam and Louis have had a "tough" time of late, they revealed in an interview with The Sun. Discussing how they have coped, Liam said the last ten days have "probably [been] the toughest since the band was formed."

Liam says the boys are "gutted" with Zayn's decision but they have been doing their best to carry on as normal.

"We're gutted that Zayn chose to leave, but now after a few performances as a four piece, we're feeling confident and are determined to carry on stronger than ever," he admitted.

Less than 24 hours after Zayn first quit the tour, his remaining bandmates had to continue with gigs across Southeast Asia.

Niall says their main motivation for carrying on with the tour and with future music is their legions of fans. "All we want to do is make them proud and return their faith in us with a brilliant tour and an amazing new album," he told the newspaper.

The lads have been taking to social media in recent days to thank their fans for their unending support:

We're glad to see all is not lost yet for 1D!
