In an effort to highlight the plight of millions of refugee children, Plan International Ireland conducted an experiment on Dublin's Grafton Street during the capital's busiest shopping period.

With the help of 9-nine-year-old Robyn Dempsey, the organisation gave a voice to the countless refugee children who arrive in foreign cities unaccompanied.

While a worrying number of Christmas shoppers ignored Robyn's pleas earlier this week, many stopped to help the child before being told that she was lost after being forced to flee a hostile situation.

Commenting on the footage, CEO of Plan Ireland, Paul O'Brien, said: "Just over the population of the UK have been forced to leave their home. More than 65 million. Over half of them are children. "

"We cannot look away from this crisis. Think for a moment of a girl who is lost, alone and afraid," he continued.

"A girl who has seen more pain and violence than we could even begin to imagine. It does not matter who she is or where she is from."

Did you see Robyn during your Christmas shopping trip?

Look, you don't need us to tell you that choosing a Christmas present for a new partner is a bloody minefield.

The first festive season with the boyfriend du jour is a real milestone, and it's made all the more difficult if your relationship is still in its first flush when you're only bleedin' mad about him, but still struggle to remember his surname after a few too many.

While you undoubtedly want to impress, you don't want to scare the bejaysus out of him, and you have a sneaking suspicion that with one overly romantic or intimate gift you might find yourself celebrating New Year's Eve alone.

Ladies, you walk a very fine line in this situation, and we're here to hold your hand.

Band T-shirts

Lads love T-shirts. It's a simple fact of life, and it makes Christmas very easy for most of us.

Whether it's Kanye, Metallica or Radiohead he's into, you can't go wrong springing for a T-shirt that gives more than a passing nod to his favourite band.

Finding the motivation to exercise is hard enough, but finding the motivation to exercise in December is another thing entirely.

It's pitch dark when you get up, pitch dark when you leave the office, and you have a bed that can't do enough for you, so it's no surprise most of us see our exercise routine fall by the wayside once winter sets in.

But if you've been busy beating yourself up over your desire to spend an extra hour under the covers instead of slogging it out on the treadmill, stop right now because the experts have your back on this one.

According to a study from Chicago's Northwestern University. our muscles work more efficiently when our body is properly awake which means early-morning workouts aren't all they're cracked up to be.

"Oxygen and the internal clock are doing a dance together inside muscle cells to produce energy, and the time of day determines how well that dance is synchronised," wrote lead author Dr Joseph Bass.

"The capacity for a cell to perform its most important functions, to contract, will vary according to the time of day. In the future, we may discover new ways to manipulate the oxygen response of the cell by resetting the clock."

"We’re not saying we can tell athletes when they should work out but in the future, perhaps, you may be able to take advantage of these insights to optimise muscle function."

So, if you've been trying and failing to hit up the 6am spin class for the last month, don't worry because it sounds like the lie-in would do you better.

Score!

Notions is a uniquely Irish phenomenon, and we all have at least one mate who is full to bursting with them.

It may have been far from €200 sheepskin gloves she was reared, but that doesn't stop her insisting she can't get through winter without them.

And as anyone who's mates with a notion-head will know, choosing their Christmas present is a form of absolute torture.

Do you give into their carry-on and splash out on a chrome coffee flask or do you turn the other cheek and hand over the scratchy pyjamas you saw in a bargain basket?

Well, we've done the thinking for you on this one.

The following is an extract from Peter Varga's Humans of Dublin.

Drawn from the archives of the incredibly popular online blog, Peter Varga's Humans of Dublin gives a voice to the people of our capital city.

A collection of portraits, memories and snapshots, Humans of Dublin provides a thought-provoking insight into the Irish capital and its vibrant and diverse inhabitants.

Pictured above is a resident who shares his story of persistence and perseverance.

On the day I was born, the doctors told my mum I would never be able to walk. She said, ‘Of course he will.’

I have only one leg. I was born with a birth defect, so I’m using a prosthetic leg since I was one-year-old. I was actually walking since I was about one and a half.

Every few months other kids had new shoes – I had new shoes and a new leg too. I was a part of the football team in school, I cycle, I do everything.

When I was 16, I even tried to work in a pub, but the bar manager told me he won’t hire me to be lumping around in his pub. Well, he didn’t believe in me either.

I never actually knew how it was to have two legs, and I never felt disabled or in any way less than others.

What is the best thing about having only one leg?

Well, people ask me if I would have one wish would I wish for another leg.

And I always say I don’t think I would waste my wish for that. Having only one leg made me think more and made me more creative, and I think that helps a lot. I see the world differently from everybody else.

I want people to look at me and get inspired by me running after my dreams. I want them to have no excuses and say, ‘If he can do it, I can do it, too … ’

We all know Instagram is used as a platform to project an image of the life you want, but not necessarily the life you truly lead.

And while we might try to remind ourselves of this after an hour spent scrolling, it helps to see it in black and white from someone who appears to have a life millions might lust after.

Acknowledging this, Austrian-born but London-based model, Jazz Egger, has made the decision to re-caption her Instagram uploads in an effort to share the truth behind the stunning shots.

From revealing that her skin had been digitally enhanced despite arriving at a shoot with a clear complexion to confessing she went on a Tour of London by herself because her friends refused to, Jazz is done with the charade.

Using #truthbehindthisshot hashtag, Jazz shines a light on the reality of the modelling industry while bravely highlighting her own insecurities and hang-ups.

Jazz, we salute you.

There was this…

And this…

And what about this?

Oh, and we've all been there…

Oh, and then there was this…

If you'd been planning to hop across the pond for next year's T in the Park festival, you may want to start making alternative plans.

According to emerging reports, the popular music festival in Scotland has been cancelled, and it's all because of an osprey's nest.

No, seriously.

Releasing a statement to explain the reason for the cancellation, event organiser's said: "For over 23 years, T in the Park has been at the heart of Scotland's music scene – with you, by our side. But for now, sadly, we need to take a break."

"As the build-up to the festival was well underway, we were informed by Scottish Government Ministers that we would have to apply for full Planning Permission due to the presence of an unregistered, but protected in law, osprey's nest."

Expressing their regret over the situation, they continued: "The constraints – logically and financially – that the resulting planning conditions put upon us are simply not workable."

"We tried our best to work with the pressures placed upon the site by bringing in an additional team and fixing the first-year traffic issues, but ultimately we're not in control of the overall site layout, and the continued restrictions mean that the negative impact on our fans and the limitations placed on their experience is too great."

Focussing on the future and sounding pretty positive, they finished: "We now need to take stock and take a year out to try to resolve the issues so that we can once again deliver the kind of camping festival you are used to and deserve."

And that's it, folks.

There are criers, and then there are criers.

While the former generally manage to maintain their composure unless confronted with something especially devastating, the latter have been known to cry at everything from the sight of a lone glove to the closing scene of Ghost.

And it's not that criers are drama queens (of course not), it's just that they're so full of feels they have to go somewhere… and out their eyes is as good a place as any.

Here are just 12 things any crier knows to be true.

1. The introduction of music to a potentially sad scene is your downfall

“No! No! Not Chasing Cars! I can’t do this."

2. If the person beside you starts up, you don’t stand a chance

“Oh, thanks a lot. That’s it. I’m done now.”

3. If it involves the death of an animal, you’ll have to peace out.

“I’m sorry but I’d rather put my head in the oven."

4. You have shed more tears over Grey’s Anatomy than anything in real life.

“Remember when Denny died?”

5. The fact Thomas J needed his glasses still haunts you

“He can’t see without his glasses. Put his glasses on!”

6. Video of soldiers coming home on YouTube is your go-to when you’re in need of a weep

“He's never met his baby girl? Oh, sweet Jesus."

7. You have cried over things that are actually meant to be, you know, uplifting?

“Read this WeightWatchers testimonial, girls. She's come so far!”

8. You're used to people blatantly rolling their eyes in your face when you begin getting a little choked-up.

"Sorry? Just because you're dead inside?"

9. You've found yourself holding back tears in the office after (secretly) watching a particularly heartwarming viral.

"This is not happening. This is not happening."

10. You've found yourself wondering about your loved ones who keep it together during heartwrenching movie scenes.

"Should I be scared of them? Why aren't they crying? Are they ENJOYING this sorrow?"

11. You've been known to seek out lists of things that you know will make you cry.

"This dog sits on his owner's grave every day, girls. Every day."

12. Old people make you cry, then you think of Up and then you cry even more.

"They'd decorated the nursery? I'm out of here."

You'd think after 12 long years we'd have gotten the hang of Facebook.

And yet the site which has seen the revolution of our style, makeup and love life still manages to get the better of us… even now.

Whether it's a slip of the thumb, a drunken request or a mortifying exchange, Mark Zuckerberg really knows how to put us through the ringer.

Here are just 12 things every single one of us has done at least once.

1. Scrolled through your own page imagining what you look like to other people.

"I'm a real good-time girl, aren't I?"

2. Deleted a status after it didn't receive a single like.

"This is the most humiliating thing I've ever experienced."

3. Created an event and then agonised over how long it took people to accept their invite.

"Two hours? And she calls herself my BFF?"

4. Re-shared a status which bombed two years ago in the hopes it would perform better this time around.

"Nope, not funny in 2014, not funny now."

5. Liked a page, and then panicked over whether anyone would know you'd done it.

"The Best of the Golden Girls? I'll never live it down."

6. Blanked a kindly old relative who thinks her messages are private.

"Is she for real? AND she signed off with her name."

7. Accidentally added someone as a friend, and only found out after they accepted.

"OMG, when did I do that? How long has she kept me hanging?"

8. Tagged the wrong person in a photograph.

"Argh, they'll get a notification and it'll be my stupid face staring back at them."

9. Edited a Facebook status so many times, your so-called friends call you out on it.

"Nah, it was better the first time around, Put that one back up."

10. Wondered if you should update your relationship status… four years after getting into a relationship.

"Some people from school might  think I'm still single. They must know the truth."

11. Deleted a Facebook friend only to have them bring it up when you randomly bump into them.

"What?! I didn't! Maybe you deleted me…har, har, har…"

12. Got a secret thrill when the f*ckboy you fancied in school throws your profile picture a like.

"He could have had me back then, girls. And now look at him."

While upping sticks and moving abroad is one of the most exciting things you can do in your youth, it's also pretty damn costly.

Long-haul flights, travel insurance and working visas don't come cheap, so if you're planning a big move but still figuring out throw to stretch your dosh in preparation, you'll be pleased to know Tourism Australia have just made life much simpler for aspiring travellers.

Joining forces with a number of travel companies including USIT, the company is encouraging young people aged between 18 and 30 to take part in their Working Holiday Makers programme.

And that programme includes one very appealing 'all-in' package for just €999 which boasts a one-way flight to Sydney or Australia and a one-year Working Holiday Visa.

In addition to this, applicants will also be provided with a bank account, tax file number, one year’s travel insurance for Australia and New Zealand and one year’s job access.

"Youth travel is a price sensitive market and we’ve been very mindful of that fact as we’ve gone about developing partnerships for this campaign," said John O'Sullivan of Tourism Australia.

“This is the most comprehensive package of youth focused travel offers we’ve ever had in market at one time."

"Our Working Holiday Maker program provides the perfect launch-pad for a life-changing year, maybe even two, combining travel with temporary work," he added.

It is estimated approximately 5,000 Irish citizens, who meet the criteria, will avail of the WHM visa this year.

If the recent spate of freezing weather has you anticipating a white Christmas, you're not alone.

While battling through Baltic winds, hopeful members of the public have decided to put their money where their mouth is by placing bets on the likelihood we'll see in Christmas day to a white landscape.

"Frosty weather has people dreaming of a white Christmas and interest in the betting has increased over the past couple of days," Hayley O'Connor of Ladbrokes explained.

And with Met Éireann having previously released statistics that suggest we may indeed be in for a white Christmas, it's no real surprise that the general public are keen to cash in on the calculations and bookies are keen to now slash the odds.

"Records over the past 70 years show punters could be on the money and another cold snap would certainly see the odds further on the slide," Hayley added.

Ladbrokes, which started off with 6/1 odds of a snowy Christmas Day in Dublin have dropped to 5/1 while Cork, Shannon and Knock have dropped from 5/1 to 4/1.

Well ladies, is it worth it?
