It was all very awkward last week when the inspiration behind Blake Lively’s new lifestyle website, Martha Stewart, called her endeavour “stupid”. Harsh.

Now, Blake has responded to the lifestyle guru’s comments, saying: “I want to have my own path professionally and even as she said, I’m an actress … But really what it is, is I have two passions. And I think ultimately, I will always be doing both, but one is going to be paying the bills better than the other.”

Blake launched her lifestyle website, Preserve, two weeks ago now, and reactions towards the endevour have been mixed, and not just by Martha!

Don’t let Martha’s words bring you down, Blake!

Living an environmentally friendly, economically savvy, safe, happy and stress free life isn’t as easy as we’d like. These people however, have designed homes for themselves that make this kind of life, slightly more achievable. Check out five of the smartest homes ever created:

The Recycled Home
When design student, Lynda Elayna Spratley got tired of her long commute to college, she decided to move into a parking garage behind her college. She became one of the first residents of SCADpad, a three-dorm compound built and styled by the students and staff of Savannah College of Art and Design to prove that underused public spaces can recycled, if you will, into homes.

The Disaster Proof Home
The Archie family were left pretty much homeless when their house was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. However, with the help of the Make It Right Foundation, they now live in a disaster proof home. With reinforced walls, it can withstand winds of up to 209 km/h, there are hurricane shutters that can be screwed on to protect the doors and windows; and the whole base is bolted to 8 feet of concrete-and-steel stilts, which protect the house from flooding. Pretty impressive!

2

The Tiny Home
When Macy Miller fell into financial trouble during her divorce, and had to sell the house she had shared with her husband, she decided enough was enough, and built a teeny tiny, but perfectly formed little house. For $11,000. Her expenses have halfed, and since her house is built on a trailer, she can easily move if she needs to. Perfect!

3

The Responsive Home
When retired Marine Sergeant John Peck woke up from a coma with no limbs, he had a lot of challenges ahead of him. He wouldn’t be able to open doors, and he couldn’t even reach the presses to get food, let along eat it. To combat some of his issues, Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation designed a home to suit his needs. He can now adjust lighting and height of his kitchen cabinets with the touch of a tablet, and he has a bidet so he can use the toilet by himself.

4

The Mindful Home
Hilda Brunwasser has Parkinson’s disease, but she couldn’t afford home help. So instead she installed Lively, a system of sensors attached to her pillbox, key chain and more that alert her loved ones to irregularities in her schedule. Her son no longer worries as much his mam being home alone, the perfect solution!

We’d all like a few indoor plants to brighten up our home and purify the air a bit. But if you aren’t particularly green-fingered, you might feel like you can’t offer them a good enough home.

Well think again – we’ve found five of the hardiest indoor plants around, so you don’t have to worry about coming home to a sad, old, withered up plant.

Dracaena marginata (also known as dragon tree)
This plant survives in bright locations, so keep it on your windowsill or somewhere the sun shines. It also doesn’t like to be too wet, so get one of those pots with holes in the bottom and keep it elevated so the excess water can drain out.

Philodendron
This plant is tolerant to draughts, and while you shouldn’t let it go too long without a drink, it will recover quickly. Sounds good to us!

Snake plant
Apparently these plants need such little light, they could even survive in a closet. Not that we’d recommend keeping it there.

Pothos
This leafy vine survives with low light and irregular watering, so what could go wrong?

If you’re living in a tiny apartment or bedsit, it doesn’t mean you can’t get creative when doing some decorating.

Here are some tips on how to make the most of your small space, after all, we all know size isn’t important!

De-clutter
Before you start decorating, it is essential that you de-clutter. Get rid of everything you don’t use or absolutely adore. This will allow you more space to showcase your most prized possessions.

Storage
The number one problem when you’re living in a small apartment is finding somewhere to store all your stuff. A bed or couch with storage underneath can be a life saver for the bedroom. In the kitchen area you can play around with ideas, such as using a peg board to hang utensils on. Walls are generally empty spaces so you should use them to your advantage. Look on Pinterest for some creative DIY options, such as using a magnet on your kitchen wall to hold cutlery!

Mirrors
Mirrors create the illusion of more space, so if you’re feeling slightly claustrophobic, a mirror could do just the trick. Personalise it with some photos or flowers to add your own feel to the place.

Accessorize
Just because your home is small, doesn’t mean it can’t be filled with character. Accessorise with photos, paintings, cushions, rugs and throws to put your stamp on the space.

A bedroom is a very personal place, especially if you are living with lots of other people – there’s always someone in the front room.

Do you have a comfy headboard, a spotlessly clean room or a perfectly coordinated space? Here’s what your room says about you:

Lots of florals
If your room is covered in pretty floral drapes, bedspreads and pastel cushions you are definitely a romantic at heart.

You still have your old bedroom lamp
You love vintage and old-school items and are not fussed about having on-trend items. You are also probably sentimental and love having a touch of the past near you.

Crisp clean sheets
Well we all love crisp, clean sheets – some of us are just more lack about changing them. However, if you are one of the few who does, it could mean that you love nothing more than a little luxury in your life.

Bright colours
While some people are adverse to having bright colours in their bedroom, others simply can’t get enough. If you’re room is a rainbow of colour you are adventurous and looking for fun.

Sparse
You are a minimalist and you like to keep things simple.  We wish we were like this….

It can be hard not to get a pang of jealousy when that impossibly pretty girl you went to school with puts up a gorgeous photo of her new Christian Louboutins or her amazing designer wardrobe.

Rather than get down about it and allow yourself to be jealous (which is bad for your body and mind ladies) here are some ways you can stop it in it’s tracks.

1. Life on social media is all filters and chosen carefully. Realise that nobody would bother post a picture of their smelly 5 year-old runners, the new pink Nike ones work better, obviously. People choose what they put up on their social media feeds, and obviously, like yourself, they choose the best.

2. Don’t be a bitch. Always be gracious and never resort to bitchy comments on another girl’s social media feed. So not cool.

3. Realise that life’s successes aren’t measured through social media. Yes, that Marc Jacobs handbag is uh-mazing but what about the things you have that this person may not?

4. Be happy for them. Turn your negativity into positivity. If she can get a banging body she loves enough to put on the internet then good for her!

5. Don’t try to live up to their lives. Be you. Have what you have and be grateful.

We’ve all been there – you wake up late, can’t find your keys, mess up your make-up and then drop your coffee two minutes after buying it.

It can be easy to succumb to this nightmare day and be in bad form all day.

But instead, turn that frown upside down with these simple tactics!

And when you lock yourself out of your house, you’ll just laugh instead!

1. Take a few moments
Breathe in and out for about five minutes to clear your head.

2. Listen to some soothing music
Music can have a massive impact on your mood so why not listen to something uplifting and inspiring.

3. Talk
Ring your favourite person – best friend, parent or boyfriend, to cheer yourself up. Just don’t bring them down with you!

4. Reflect
Things aren’t so bad. Ok so, dropping your €4.30 cup of coffee really isn’t ideal but let’s focus on the positive eh?

5. Treat yourself
Buy yourself your favourite bar of chocolate or have a sneaky shopping spree. You’ll soon feel better!

A muffin tin can come in handy other than in the kitchen you know!

1. Jewellery organiser
Paint it a pretty colour and use it to separate your earrings and rings. Cute!

2. Plants
Use your muffin tin to plant small plants or herbs.

3. Smoothie cubes
Make a big batch of smoothie at the start of the week then divide the mixture between the holders. Freeze and then place them in a freezer bag. Store in the freezer and blend with some water or coconut water every morning. So handy!

4. Condiments
Instead of a big mess of ketchup, mayo, mustard, pesto and hummus for this year’s barbecue, store your condiments in a muffin tin with individual spoons and top up as you need. Mess and stress free!

5. Party food
Store different types of pick n’ mix in muffin tin holders for a cute and sweet display.

1. The digits ’57’ on a Heinz ketchup bottle
Did you know if you knock on this with your palm the ketchup will come out easier and faster than hitting it anywhere else? Well now you do!

2. The ring-pull on a can of coke
One of the ring pulls on your can of coke (or any other can) is to keep a straw in place. Now you can wear lipstick while drinking a can and not worry about smudging OR getting hit in the eye with a bobbing straw!

3. The little hole at the top of your biro
This little hole is actually incredibly important. It’s is created to avoid asphyxiation if the lid is swallowed. Clever!

4. Two zippers on one bag
If your school-bag or weekend bag has two zippers then you can lock it with a padlock by inserting it into the two bottom holes.

5. ACCIDENTALLY LEAVE THE CAPS LOCK ON?
Press the Shift and F3 keys simultaneously for the magic to happen. Press F3 one more time to make the first word of each sentence capital.

1. Warm colours
If your walls and furniture portray a warmth, you’ll notice an instant change. Oranges, reds, greens and browns are much cosier colours than whites or pastels.

2. Mixed fabrics
Mix your fabrics and patterns to add a sense of cosiness to your living room. Mismatched pillows and blankets will make the room instantly snug.

3. Plants, herbs and flowers
The addition of some nature into your home will not only purify the air but it is aesthetically pleasing.

4. Wood
The addition of wooden furniture, panels or floors to your home will make it feel warm. Think about the portrayal of cosiness you get when you think of the inside of a ski chalet. Bring that to your home!

5. Candles and scent
Candles give a home a dim, romantic light and calmness. Smell is also a very powerful way to give your home a cosy feeling, it’s as simple as putting some orange peel into a saucepan – click here to learn how!

6. Embrace your clutter
Cosy homes are ones that embrace book collections, duck figurine collections and all types of memorabilia. Cosy homes are not minimalist.
