Anyone who has a long commute to work will know that it often feels like 'dead time.'

Unless you have a good book, or some pre-work prep to occupy you, there's not a lot else to keep you amused on that bus, train or even car journey.

So it doesn't seem totally unreasonable to us that you might decide to do your make-up during that time, thereby giving yourself more time in bed and less time bored on the bus.

But now one expert is urging women to stop doing their make-up on the go, saying it could pose a very real health risk.

"The modern-day phenomenon of applying make-up on the journey to work undoubtedly increases the risk of scratching your cornea," explained Dr Susan Blakeney of the UK College of Optometrists.

Any sudden jolt on the bus or train could result in any number of minor injuries from mascara wands, eyeshadow applicators or even tweezers, she says.

Plus, there's also the added risk of getting an eye infection from applying make-up with unclean hands. "The human eye is pretty resilient, but poor hygiene can lead to unpleasant infections."

That's us told.
