make-up

A new hashtag has taken over the world of Twitter and Instagram, and we love it!

#ThePowerofMakeUp has been used by thousands of women worldwide, posting pictures of themselves with half of their face covered in make-up.

The movement was started by 21-year-old  make-up artist, Nikkie De Jager, when she posted a video entitled: "the power of make-up". In it she explained that she has "been noticing a lot that girls have been almost ashamed to say they love makeup."

“Because these days [people assume] you either do it for boys, you do it because you’re insecure, or because you don’t love yourself… I feel like in a way lately it’s almost a crime to love doing your makeup.”

Thousands of women were inspired by Nikkie's video and are hitting back at those who shame them for wearing make up and those who tell them they wear make-up to impress other people.

Oops. Kim Kardashian just had an epic Twitter fail. #morto

While it’s unclear if Kim was genuinely devastated over the fact that her favourite foundation is being discontinued (we feel you, Kim), or if she was hoping for a few freebies to be tossed her way (we get that too), she made a serious faux-pas in the process.

Autocorrect couldn’t save her this time as the famous Kardashian, for shame, misspelled designer Giorgio Armani’s name, adding in an unnecessary ‘e’.

As if that typo wasn’t bad enough, the brand picked up on her slip and replied to the star with such a level of sass, we’re all feeling a little second-hand embarrassment.

The brand’s reply has been retweeted more than the original tweet sent out by Kim. Which is pretty impressive seeing as she has more than 32million followers.

It’s not all bad news for Kim though, as the brand did say it was more than happy to help her out and supply her with some of the foundation.

We can only imagine Kim’s relief because her contouring regime would be all over the place without such a life-giving product.

Never mind the fact that the Kardashians seem to have a glam squad shadowing them 24-hours a day, we can all sympathise with Kim’s fear of running out of a much-loved. And presumably she couldn’t be without it at her forthcoming make-up master-class.

To be fair, the 34-year old reality star has had a pretty busy few weeks with Kanye’s birthday surprise, rumours everywhere about her second pregnancy and North’s massive Disneyland birthday party to plan.

Meaning on this occasion we'll forgive the slip-up.

Still, we reckon Kimmy might skip Milan Fashion Week this year all the same…

Forget the manky sponges that sometimes come with powder and cream compacts, what’s now on offer is far more sophisticated. Complexion-perfecting sponges, used damp to buff in foundation, are back with a bang.

As a devotee to quite the ridiculous collection of make-up brushes, it took me a while to get excited about the beauty sponge trend. With enough buffing brushes to last a lifetime, I was still set on trying a few, though – all in the name of research, of course.

Sponges of this type are super-absorbent and best used damp. Run a clean one under the tap, squeeze well and repeat a few times – it should expand quite a bit. Dot foundation on with your fingers, and use the sponge to buff and blend as much as you see fit. You might need a second layer and it may take longer than using a brush, but the result will be far more seamless and ‘skin-like’. I especially love these sponges for working concealer into the undereye area.

Any downsides? As well as taking longer to use, cleaning and hygiene are also a biggie with these sponges. The best way to wash them is with baby shampoo, and alcohol from the chemist is good for disinfecting them, too. Oh, and make sure to keep sponges in a sealed container to ensure that they’re not rolling around in dust or dirt of any kind – bleugh!

The Beautyblender (€21 from cultbeauty.co.uk) is what set this trend alight. Mario Dedivanovic, the makeup artist most famous for Kim Kardashian’s signature look, has created a huge amount of hype around the original makeup sponge, and uses it not only for foundation, but also powder and even moisturiser from time to time! It was the first sponge I tried and remains my favourite; I love the pointed shape and I cannot achieve the finish it gives with any other tool. We might think of sponges as cheap, throwaway items, but these are really sophisticated and will last a long time if cared for correctly. If you’d prefer not to order online, it’s also available in Make Up For Ever on Clarendon St.

Blanaid Johnson, owner of Irish online beauty retailer Cloud10Beauty, reckons that ‘there are some pretty poor sponges out there… the materials used either absorbs too much product or is not soft enough for a flawless application. I like the flat edge on the Real Techniques one. It’s a simple addition which for me made it much more useful’. The Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge is also a winner for me; not quite as amazing as the Beautyblender, but definitely great in its own right. The flat edge is really handy, and it’s also far better budget-wise at just €7.99 in Boots.

Blank Canvas Cosmetics, an Irish makeup brand, have their own version, the Airbrush Blender Sponge (€7.99). This is the largest and heaviest of the three sponges I’ve tried. Though the quality is still there, I found it just a little too big for getting into all of the various nooks and crannies of the face. I might just reserve this one for powder, Mario-style!

Hate to be the bearers of bad news ladies but this is actually possible. Whether you’re getting all glammed up for a big night on the town or your just putting in a 9-to-5 day with the essentials from your make-up bag, you could be doing some serious damage. We may not even realise it but some of the most common make-up habits can be doing awful things to our skin without us even noticing. So, to help keep you at your healthiest, we identified the worst habits we’re all guilty of that can ruin our glowing appearance.

Ignoring expiration dates

You wouldn’t use bread that’s been sitting in your kitchen turning green would you? The same goes for your cosmetics. Almost all of your products should have a symbol on their label that lets you know how long it’s safe to keep using once opened. And while we all have our absolute favourites we couldn’t live without, clinging to that two year old MAC matte could give you a nasty infection. Or worse, age old mascara might leave you with some less than sultry stink eye. Rebecca Taylor, M.D., an ophthalmologist and spokeswoman for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, recommends getting rid of them after three months.

Sharing is actually not so caring

It really doesn’t matter how amazing your BFF’s lippy was last night, you need go and buy your own. Or you could end up like the woman who borrowed her friend’s make-up brush and ended losing the use of her legs due to catching MRSA.  Nobody wants a cold sore, or conjunctivitis. Not cool. So to avoid the any risky infections, or the inevitable cold shoulder when a certain gloss goes missing, keep your favourites separate. You can still admire, obviously, just from afar.

Fake it ‘til you make it

Between holidays, festivals or just your social life in general, it can be easier to fork out and have a professional take care of your stubby lash woes. Be warned though, some of the glues contain less than sweet ingredients. Such as formaldehyde, which can cause serious irritation to your eyes. Taylor says that “if applied poorly, extensions can cause lashes to become brittle and break off”. Which is exactly the look we were hoping to avoid. She recommends having a patch test done so you can see how the glue will affect you before going all-in.

Misplacing your lines

Look, we all want that doe-eyed oh-so-pretty aesthetic, it’s not that uncommon. But here’s a helpful tip, applying liner to your waterline isn’t going to help. The opposite actually. And, it’s going to mess with your vision too #epicfail. Your eyes have their own natural bacteria and putting liner in the mix is going to make it too crowded in there. Steal clear of the water then!

Hitting the hay, face intact

It’s always tempting after a long day (or night) to dive straight into the duvet, to hell with the face wipes, bring on the naps! How about no, though? Skipping this vital step in the beauty process is going to leave your eyes irritated, and your pores clogged. So clogged pores might not lead to certain death, but Taylor explains “when you toss and turn your head throughout the night, traces of makeup can migrate into the eye.” And nobody wants to wake up the morning of that most important interview with a nasty stye. Pass us the cleanser please and thank you.

Summer might have not arrived just yet, but we all know that when the heat-wave hits the last thing we want to worry about is our make-up taking for the hills. Hotter temperatures are known for causing our cosmetics to give us the slip but there's no need to worry.

We've got a list of the best tips to help you stay in control no matter how hot it gets!

    1. The two second spritz

Avoid your make-up melting off your face the second you walk out the door by applying a make-up setting spray after the application process. It only takes seconds to spritz yourself and trust us, it’s worth it.

2. Pick your primer

If you can bear to set that alarm a precious few minutes earlier for the sake of make-up, then you might as well add a primer to your routine. Ideal for the warmer weather primers help to keep your skin stay matte and fresh despite the extra heat and as a bonus will keep your slap in place longer. You can also dab some on your lids to keep those smoky eyes from turning to miserable fog.

3. Raid the presses

Don’t have any pricey primers knocking around at home? Not to worry. A pinch of milk of magnesia can help keep oily skin under control all day long.

   4. Do the criss-cross

No, it’s a not the latest dance move, sorry to get your hopes up. It’s actually how you should be applying your foundation to keep it looking streak free even if you can’t avoid the sweaty look. Also, while you’re in the rhythm, try not to drag your powder across your face. Instead opt for a dabbing motion to help keep things in place.

    5. Get on board with gel cosmetics

This goes for those all-important brows and your eyeliners. Wax-based products are going to stay in place no matter the amount of moisture in the air, so keep your pencils sharpened for the winter months and get some gel liner for the summer.

    6. Less is more

Layering up on eyeshadows is sure to be a disaster once the temperatures hit double digits. In order to avoid the dreaded panda eye look, apply a nude coloured eye pencil to your waterline to help your eyes look bigger without overdosing on the product.

    7. Liquid proof your lips

Try and go for cream based lipsticks that will be less likely to go all independent woman on you once the sun comes out. If you can bear to part with your trusted lippy all together, work a ‘Cupid’s bow’ by applying a little concealer to the centre of your top lip, and a dab of highlighter. Finish with your favourite lip balm and you’re good to go be your best Greek goddess inspired self.

   8. Double duty powders

If you really want to make sure your lips stay matte in the sun summer sun, you can always dab a little powder over them, either straight from the brush or dabbing with your fingertips.

9. Invest in blotting papers

Ditching the foundation for the summer months is a great plan and will definitely help to keep yourself looking less of a sweaty mess in the heat. But for those of us who need just a little something, BB creams are the next best thing. Unfortunately, they often leave you looking just a little too glowing. So grab some blotting papers to have on hand throughout the day to avoid any shiny complications.

   10. Super water-proof mascara

Nothing says epic fail like mascara tears running down your chin. Avoid looking an emotional mess and invest in an incredibly waterproof mascara that’s sure to stay in place even if you’re deep-sea diving.

   11. Perfect the goddess look

If you’re dying to achieve that dewy look, try adding a little highlighter to your foundation and sweeping it over your cheeks and collarbones for a definite beach babe look.

   12. Embrace the colours

Going for the less is more look can leave you feeling a little washed out when the sun goes behind the clouds. But is there a super strong lip colour you’ve been eyeing up? Or a shade of blusher you think might be a bit much in November? Go out and get it! Stronger pigments are going to last longer when the dreaded perspiration hits hard, so use this time wisely to go all out with your favourite shades.

If celebrities like Mila, Miley, and Katy aren't afraid to step out in the spotlight fresh-faced (if we can call it that) than we shouldn't be either.

Unfortunately this bravery rarely stretches to the first time your partner sees you without make up on, a sadly inevitable event.

But for most of us it is usually (and thankfully) an anticlimactic moment: we build it up and up in our heads and then our partners usually don’t even notice. Phew!

But it is good to know that we are not all alone in feeling like this. A survey was carried out by the skincare team at The Loop in Dublin and Cork airports which confirmed our fears.

They found that one in five women wait three months before daring to reveal their make-up free faces to their partners.

Surprisingly, they also found that we are far more likely to reveal our naked bodies to our significant others than our bare faces. Almost half of the respondents said that they would ditch the clothes after a month while 16 percent said they would do so immediately.

The survey also found out which nation Irish women are the most jealous of when it comes to skincare and complexions. The answer was France, with three out of five dubbing them as their ‘skin idols’.

A huge 70 percent of respondents said that the gently sun-kissed complexion was their favourite skin tone while 22 percent went for the pale and interesting look. Overdoing your tan is definitely out with a low three percent opting for the perma-tan look.

The Loop in Terminal 1 of Dublin Airport has just unveiled its new beauty hall and it holds loads of our favourite brands including Estee Lauder, Lancome and Elizabeth Arden.

Bikinis, sunglasses, suncream – just a few necessities on every woman’s summer holiday checklist.

But one thing that many of us don’t think about buying is a foundation that will suit our newly bronzed skin (hey – a girl can always dream).

If you are thinking about trying a new foundation this summer, Fuschia Make Up has just launched its new range and it’s certainly worth a look.

Perfect Skin (€28) is an anti-ageing foundation but this is great for younger people too because it uses a plumping ingredient which will give your face an extra lift – perfect for those Monday mornings after a busy weekend of social engagements and party dates.

The Perfect Skin range also comes with the Velvet Veil primer (€15) which is useful for hiding any open pores that become so annoyingly obvious after a few hours of wearing foundation.

Fuschia has also found the answer to lasting foundation in the heat with its Setting Spray (€20) which can be used at the end of every make up application.

Fuschia Make Up is an Irish brand and you can buy it in salons and pharmacies around the country.

When it comes to eyeliner, we all have so many goals but we can rarely achieve them. It is one of those things you need to do well, or don't do at all.

Here are the do's and don'ts of eyeliner to guide you on your next attempt. Try looking at a celebrity make-up look you like and following that for further help.

Do
1. Apply white to the lower waterline to open up your eyes and make them appear wider.

2. Cut corners so you don't completely overdo it and make your eyes look strange.

3. Leave the bottom lash line liquid liner free if you don't want a dramatic look.

Don't
1. Leave a gap between your eyeliner and top lash line. Blend it into your lashes so it emphasises your lashes instead of drawing attention to the gap.

2. Only line the bottom lash line. Your eyes will look droopy and bizarre without anything on the top.

3. Just use it to draw a thick line around your eyes. You will end up with panda eyes. Experiment with different shapes and styles.

For us beauty amateurs, blush can be the trickiest make-up product to master. Sure, practice makes perfect, but a good investment blush can also work wonders, warming up and shaping your face.

So we were keen as mustard to try out Urban Decay's afterglow 8-hour powder blush, to see if it can claim a hot-spot in our make-up bags.

The brand promises that it lasts for a full eight hours, and afterglow is certainly gorgeously light with a creamy texture. It's also available in 12 different colours, meaning your should find your perfect hue regardless of whether you're looking to go vibrant, bold, subtle, or neutral. The finish of the blush varies, as some are matte and some are slightly more shimmery.

Thankfully, this is a blush which blends easily to avoid a build-up of powder. It also has light-diffusing pigments to make your skin look flawless.

Design-wise, there is a "UD" cut-out on the compact lid complete with a quirky fishnet design, and handily the shade can be seen through the cut-out.

Afterglow 8-hour powder blush is €28 and is available in selected Debenhams stores, and at House of Fraser in the Dundrum Town Centre.

YouTube has well and truly taken over, hasn’t it?  I think a lot of us spend more time in front of YouTube than we do the TV these days – that is, unless you are enough of a genius to have hooked your tablet or laptop up to the telly!

We’ve all witnessed the explosion of beauty ‘gurus’ on YouTube – it’s changed the entire industry. These days, I won’t even look at a product twice without Googling a review, and YouTube videos have a huge part to play in that process.

There’s also a new breed of celebrity as a result of this explosion – the YouTuber! There’s nothing wrong with that in general of course, but it does mean that many of the girls I’ve watched for years have begun to market themselves towards a younger audience in order to build hype. These days, it can be hard to find a straight talker online who just offers trustworthy product reviews – and awesome blending skills are always a plus!

I’ve rounded up three beauty YouTubers you might not have heard of yet. I don’t find any of them overly twee or hyper – sure, they all have personalities, but nothing OTT. Each brings something a little different to the table, but, trust me – they’re all great fun, really helpful and genuinely brilliant at what they do.

Whatever you’re up to this weekend, be prepared to lose a few hours to these babes…

LustreLux’s videos somehow always have the power to make me want to drop everything and slap on the makeup, Drag Race style. This girl loves a heavy look and makes no apologies for it, because she pulls it all off so effortlessly. I can only dream of recreating her work, but I do love trying… pass the glitter!

Rachel Whitehurst is a long-running favourite of mine, because she’s all about beauty without the bullsh*t. I like her not only for her wonderfully sarcastic personality, but also for her fantastic taste in beauty products. The girl knows how to rock a bold lip, and shares my fetish for highlighter – just call us kindred spirits.

Monika Blunder is a celebrity make-up artist who boasts Rosie Huntington Whitely, Jessica Alba and Amanda Seyfried as clients – need I go on? Monica works closely with one of my favourite brands, Laura Mercier – but she doesn’t go for the hard sell, and will often feature cheaper alternatives. If you’re a Lisa Eldridge fan, you’ll adore Monica – her tutorials are really relaxing and easy to follow.

When we see celebrities all dolled up on the red carpet or out and about during the day, we just expect them to have an army of make-up artists behind them to perfect the glam. However, this is in fact not the case for every celebrity. Here are five celebrities who do their own make-up and it will definitely surprise you.

1.  Blake Lively
Blake has previously said: "I like doing my own make-up and hair for events. I think it's fun." Okay, so she's just naturally flawless then…

2. Kate Middleton
So remember when Kate looked super gorgeous on her wedding day? There wasn't any royal help behind that, she actually did her make-up herself.

3. Cheryl Fernandez- Versini
The singer has said: "I've lived with this face for 31 years, so I know it better than anybody!" Hmmm we're not sure if we're convinced just yet…

4. Taylor Swift
We all have a blank space in our daily beauty routine without her make-up tips. Tay, pleeeease.

5. Shakira
The singer has said the reason for doing her own make-up is: "Because I'm good, I'm cheap, I'm fast." Nice logic, Shakira.
