Those that revel in the delightfully fiendish time of year that is Halloween are living (dead) the dream right now. The scary films, the frightening puns, the gloriously ghoulish costumes; it's hell on earth – and you know you love it. Special attention is put into choosing your spooky attire; you want a look that's both terrifying AND on trend.

To stand out from the crowd, many of us opt to take things to another level of horror and pop in special scary contact lenses – taking the scream factor from two to twenty if done right.  However, caution must be taken when it comes to using these; used incorrectly and you could seriously damage your sight. We've all heard the horror stories.  Because if you can't see a potential hot Dracula to sink your fangs into on All Hallow's Eve, WTF is the point, really?

Here's what you need to know – and why caution needs to be taken – before buying and using Halloween contact lenses:

It's better to invest in a decent pair

Yes, it can be very tempting it can be to order some cheap, creepy contact lenses online the day before the party, without the hassle of having to go into a store and have lenses properly fit (and we've all probably done it).

However, any type of contact lens – no matter where they’re from – that haven’t been properly fitted by an eye care professional can cause serious damage to your eyes. Specsavers, for example, will fit you for some – they aren't the cheapest on the market, but you know you're getting a quality pair which will minimise any risk to your eyes.

What will happen if I just buy a cheap and cheerful pair for the day/night?

Some eye conditions people can experience after wearing these types of lenses include:

  • Decreased, or blurry vision
  • Redness
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Infection
  • Allergic reaction
  • Scratches on the cornea
  • Corneal swelling
  • Eye ulcers
  • Eye pain
  • Blindness, in extreme cases

You might think you'll be fine just wearing them as a once-off, but do you really want to take that risk? Experts have said don't do it.

Do I need a prescription to wear them?

Yes. In Ireland, it's illegal for anyone to sell contact lenses unless they are supplied to a valid contact lens prescription. All lenses, including non-prescription lenses, are now classed as medical devices, and should only be supplied or supervised by a registered optician.

What happens if I do wear some that I've just bought online or in a shop?

Options would advise against wearing cheap contact lenses from the Internet and without a proper prescription, especially if you have never worn contacts before. But if you have or are planning to, here are some things you can do to ensure your eyes stay safe and healthy.

DO
  • Take them out immediately if they feel uncomfortable
    at any point.
  • Make sure you understand how to clean and handle the lenses, as well as other recommended instructions.
  • Look out for ‘CE’ marking on the packaging. This indicates the lenses conform to health, safety and environmental protection standards.
DON'T
  • Share your lenses with other people, as this can cause infections.
  • Wear them for extended periods of time.
  • Wear them over your normal contact lenses.
  • Wear a torn or damaged lens.

Earlier this year, one of Ireland's biggest names in beauty announced that a makeup line would be  her next venture.

Taking to Instagram, Cocoa Brown Tan guru Marissa Carter told her followers that she would be be releasing a full line of makeup, and it officially launched today.

Arguably Ireland's biggest beauty launch of the year, the collection was viewed this afternoon by some of Ireland's top names in style and beauty.

Marissa previously told her audience that the collection was going to contain very makeup bag addition a girl or guy could need, saying she would be launching: 'An entire collection – everything from foundations, to concealers, to mascaras, to eyeliners, blushers, highlighters, bronzers, lipsticks, lip-glosses…'

And trust us, she didn't disappoint.

The collection contains a whopping 103 products, with absolutely every item you could need to paint your face.

A post shared by marissacarter (@marissacarter) on

For base, the Hold Tight Perfecting Primer promises to keep your makeup in place all day, and most importantly, prevents your makeup from oxidising and turning orange.

Unlike many beauty brands, Carter Beauty is maintaining an accessible price point. When Cocoa Brown first burst on to the scene, the affordable tan was likened to much more expensive products, and Marissa wanted to maintain the brand ethos of high quality products at a low cost.

Items in the range start from as low as €3.95, and the most expensive product in the collection are a trio of 18-shadow eyeshadow palettes, coming in at €14.95.

'Beauty has always been my passion,' Marissa said. 'Before Cocoa Brown, I owned my own salon, Carter Beauty, and  the satisfaction I go from seeing a woman watch herself transform was second to none.'

'Carter Beauty is an ode to that.We want to help women feel confident in themselves. '

The range has truly kept every kind of woman in mind, with variations in foundation shades, lip textures, and eyeshadow colour stories.

Rather than just come out with one product like most brands do as they attempt to break in to another area of the market, Team CB jumped right in with an entire line of cosmetics that have been years in the making.

A post shared by marissacarter (@marissacarter) on

It's difficult to identify hero pieces from the collection as there are many, but a basic element to a finished makeup look has to be the foundation.

Carter Beauty is launching with two foundations, with a huge shade range – and if you are a certain shade in one, that's the corresponding shade you will be in the other.

The first foundation is the Full Measure HD foundation, giving full coverage with a matte finish (it's worth noting here that not a single one of Marissa's products are tested on animals, and have been accepted as proud members of PETA's Beauty Without Bunnies Cruelty-Free programme).

The second foundation is a dewy finish, called the Half Measure Dewy Foundation, for those days where you want your skin to shine through with just a little help. Both of these foundations have a very affordable price point of €9.85.

Moving on the the eyes, and to marissa's own favourite product , there;s the Supreme Gel Liner (whose pale pink packaging is to die for.)

'I couldn't live without the Carter Beauty Supreme Gel Liner. It's so easy to use, jet black, and it lasts all day,'  she said – and it's only €4.95.

The three eyeshadow palettes are completely studding, with two being the every-day palette you turn to and the third being a tad more dramatic.

The Smooth Nude Palette does exactly what it says on the tin, with 18 amazing shades in a range of browns, taupes and neutrals, It's the palette tha you take on every holiday and dip into everyday for work, before dipping into the darker shades to carve out that cut crease before hitting the town.

The Sweet Apricot palette was formulated with a bride in mind – flushed with soft peach tones  shimmering bronze hues and warm neutrals.

Every shade in the Sweet Apricot palette is named after a sweet that Marissa herself is a fan of – I'm particularly partial to Flump and Milkshake.

The third palette is the most dramatic, and it's definitely responding to the year's biggest makeup trends.

An array of warm sumptuous shades, the palette has Warm Velvet palette is decidedly rose-toned and rich.

The rest of the collection was equally as high quality, in kitch but minimalist packaging, with sassy names like the Throw Shade Duo contour sticks and Setting Standards baking powder.

One thing that really stood out to me about the collection is that it's completely customisable. There is no 'one look' that the line emulates.

It's ias individual as the woman who wears it, and anyone of any makeup style could peruse the Carter Beauty makeup stall and come away with elements that would compliment or revolutionise her current beauty look.

With the astronomical success of Marissa's tanning brand, there's no doubt that the makeup line will see the same triumph – and it's available online now and in 150 pharmacies nationwide over the coming weeks.

Chanel's new male makeup line is taking over the Internet as it sparks hot debates about gender roles in the beauty industry.

Everyone seems to have mixed feelings about it, some praising its originality and others disappointed with its specifically 'male' label.

The French beauty company has made waves in the beauty industry by launching its gender-targeted line called ‘Boy De Chanel’.

The male makeup industry has been booming in Asia due to popular beauty bloggers, and this could be why Chanel has chosen to launch in South Korea first, before going global.

The new men’s line will include three main products:

1. A liquid foundation with spf 25

2. A matte lip balm enriched with jojoba oil and shea butter

3.  A waterproof, twist-up brow pencil (available in four shades)

The products channel a sophisticated, sleek finish, promoting minimalism for men in the most suave fashion.

The Chanel line, Boy Chanel, is allegedly named for Gabrielle Chanel's first love, Boy Capel.

The company commented on the new line saying: “Lines, colours, attitudes, gestures…There is no absolutely feminine or masculine prerequisite: Style alone defines the person we wish to be.

“By creating Boy de Chanel, its first makeup line for men, Chanel reaffirms the ever-changing codes of an unchanging vision: Beauty is not a matter of gender, it is a matter of style.”

Many people agree with the new makeup line’s forward thinking. One comment raved: “It’s lovely to see something specific for men.”

However, despite the company’s gender-neutral emphasis, male beauty influencers seem to hold some resignations for the new line.

Renowned beauty blogger, Jake-Jamie, told Cosmopolitan: “I think it's amazing that brands like Chanel are bringing makeup for men to the forefront of people's minds, however I personally prefer a genderless approach to makeup. I just wish we lived in a world whereby gender boxes didn't exist.

“Why does it have to be a boy's eyebrow pencil? It's just an eyebrow pencil! Having said that, I do understand that not all men are as open about wearing makeup as perhaps I am, and this could give them the confidence to purchase makeup without feeling ashamed of doing so."

Another commenter suggested that “rather than this, I’d prefer to see more neutral packaging and more Male imagery featured across makeup marketing in general.”

So, while reviews of the new announcement are mixed, we look forward to trying out the new products for ourselves.

Reportedly, Boy De Chanel will originally be released on September 1st in South Korea.

It will then be available internationally in November via their website.

When you're applying your face in the morning, whether you're a BB-cream-and-go kind of girl or you're more into a full contour and highlight, do you ever stop to wonder why you're applying makeup?

Is it because you want to look professional at work, feel confident in yourself or highlight your best features?

Or is it to 'trick' men into thinking you are attractive? Because that's what 63 per cent of men seem to think.

A post shared by Gem's Blog (@abargainbygem) on

A new study by YouGov found that 63 per cent of men think that 'women mainly wear makeup in order to trick people into thinking they’re more attractive.'

As suggested by the survey service, a percentage of men think that women are 'just thirsty for the male gaze,' which is why we apply eyelash extensions, lip liner and contouring kits.

C'mon lads, we did not just spend an hour and a half getting tiny pieces of mink stuck to our eyelids with industrial strength glue just we we can bat them in the direction of a man.

And even if a woman decided to add a bit of extra effort to her makeup look to impress someone special, we highly doubt it's an attempt at trickery.

Despite the fact that men think women are hiding something with makeup, the same cannot be said of the perception of men with beards.

Only 36 per cent of individuals think that a man with a beard is using the fuzzy face fluff to hid facial imperfections.

A post shared by Makeup Affair KL (@makeupaffair.kl) on

Overall, 43 per cent of people feel that women wear 'too much makeup,' which is reflected in the experiences of women who feel that have been 'makeup shamed' for their full faces.

Famous YouTube makeup artists Nikki Tutorials has actually started a campaign to end makeup shaming among women.

Makeup can give people a confidence boost, which is nothing to be ashamed of, and it definitely doesn't mean women are trying to 'trick' people with their powders and lipliners.

We mean, if a guy really thought we had naturally shimmery eyelids and matte plum lips, then more fool him.

Have you ever gazed at the perfectly edited, well lit and angled photo of your favourite Instagram model and despaired over their flawless skin, plump pout or perfect brows?

The saying comparison is the thief of joy is exceptionally true, but when someone seems to naturally have it all, it can be harder to swallow.

Luckily, there is a lot more transparency now in the beauty guru business than ever before, with Instagram celebrities being completely honest about their expensive skin care, filler appointments and eyelash extension habits.

A post shared by Gina (@ginashkeda) on

One Instagram influencer and beauty vlogger Gina Shkeda has called out the perception of natural beauty on social media.

One of Gina's 820,000 followers tweeted the makeup guru saying 'If I could wake up as beautiful as @GinaShkeda I'd be the happiest girl alive #naturalbeauty.'

The MUA tweeted back, exposing the not-so-natural elements of her makeup free look.

'Girl, I have micro bladed brows, lash extensions in and lip injections,' she tweeted back.

'I don't even look like this, you're flawless,' she finished, with no shame about her beautifying habits.

A post shared by Gina (@ginashkeda) on

While Gina and her fan are both natural beauties, lip fillers or not, calling out false perceptions on social media is so important to remind people that what they see on their feeds isn't always exactly what they seem.

Images can be manipulated in photoshop, or people can choose to edit themselves in real life through the use of makeup, cosmetic surgery or beauty techniques like tattooed brows and eyelash extensions.

What we think is a 'natural' beauty look on someone's Instagram could be any combination of these factors, which is important to keep in mind before we go feeling bad about ourselves after scrolling through our social media streams.

You don't have to be vegan to buy or support cruelty-free cosmetics.

Every euro you spend sends a powerful message.

That's why supporting brands that don't test on animals like bunnies and puppies is clearly the way to go!

We have 11 products you can buy guilt-free, and that won't compromise you looking fabulous. (You can thank us later).

1. The Prince of Darkness – Lush

Kicking off the list, we are going to the dark side.

Lush has created an activated charcoal face mask called the Prince of Darkness.

The product often sells out and it's easy to understand why. It's infused with lavender oil and fine sea salt to clean the depths of your skin (and possibly your soul). It will have your face feeling soft and refreshed after it works its magic.

They will have to pry it out of my lifeless hand before I stop using it.

2. 'Tattoo Liner' – Kat Von D

This eyeliner is one that just doesn't budge.

Crying your eyes out after being dumped? Don't worry because your eyeliner will still look unreal.

Being attacked by hayfever season? This eyeliner has you covered as your eyes and nose may run, but this ain't going anywhere.

End up in a CAR accident? Once again, the liner comes through to have those cat eyes looking sharp.

The queen of tattooing had us covered when she was designing the product.

3. Yes, Please! Pressed Powder Shadow Palette – ColourPop

Yes, Please! – Just take our money. This eyeshadow palette is stunning, practical and pigmented.

Hitting their best selling list, the shades give you a subtle pop of colour.

Perfect for a night out in town or a dinner date catch up, this cruelty-free palette is an absolute steal.

4.  Soft Neutral Wine Matte Lipstick – Charlotte Tilbury

The matte revolution is a limited edition, so you better act fast if you want to paint the town red with this lippy.

Inspired by our favourite Friday night hobby (WINE), this lipstick is a luscious red that will make your lips stand out from the crowd.

On the slightly dear side of life, the dazzling colour and smooth application makes it worth every penny.

5.  Brazilian Cupacu Scrub-In-Oil – The Body Shop

The secret to why this body scrub is unbelievable is nut oil. When they made oils, they didn't make them equal.

This scrub contains the cupuaçu nut which is responsible for Amazonian's enviously beautiful skin.

It's a tag team as the magical oil is mixed with fine salt crystals.

The combo means the scrub is much more effective at penetrating and exfoliating the skin.

The Body Shop is also massively against animal testing and you will currently receive a fiver off your purchase if you sign their petition in store. It's really a no-brainer.

6. Nail Polish – Catrice

You don't have to lose your sparkle when shopping cruelty-free.

This stunning nail polish is a combination of Shake & Seal Top Coat ‘01 Ocean Drive’ over ICONails Gel Lacquer ‘55 All Roads Lead To The Ocean’.

For those eagle-eyed beauty lovers, you might have already guessed that the range is available in Pennys.

It's the shop that just keeps on giving!

7.  Superdrug Extracts Shampoo & Conditioner – Superdrug

Don't compromise your haircare, these shampoos and conditioners from the Superdrug range will have you in hair heaven.

They're also PERFECT for a student budget.

The creamy conditioner coats your locks to leave them strong and healthy. An added bonus is both the shampoo and conditioner smell incredibly fruity.

You get a lot for your buck here as their haircare line is extensive and affordable.

8. Purifying Body Ritual Travel Set – Urban Veda

Our jobs and plans to travel the world means that we have to make selective choices about the cosmetics we pop into our suitcase.

Whether you're taking a car, plane or train, this travel set will be one you shouldn't leave the house without.

Parabens are banished from this range, so they respect and work gently incoordination with your skin.

If that wasn't enough, it does a solid for the environment by being 100% recyclable!

It's a win-win.

9. Stay Matte & Beautiful Brush Collection, 5 Piece Set – Eco-tools

A sister duo founded Eco-tools with the mission to make us feel beautiful inside and out.

A staple in my makeup bag, this is a brand to get behind.

They're environmentally friendly, high-quality, and affordable too.

The range uses only recycled materials, renewable bamboo and a high standard of manufacturing processes.

Their care and attention are very much reflected in their products.

The brushes are soft, long-lasting with such a smooth application you'll be feeling like a MUA.

10. Instant Lift Brow Pencil – E.L.F

It's hard to imagine the time when big brows weren't in.

We only have our cringe-worthy photos as evidence of the crimes committed against our eyebrows.

This instant lift brow pencil comes in three shades and it's a hot favourite amongst E.L.F lovers.

E.L.F has listened to our cries for good quality makeup at affordable prices.

They're so good that it's almost hard not to get carried away with buying EVERYTHING.

11. Huangjisoo Pure Foaming Cleanser Deep Cleansing (Peppermint) –  The Konjac Sponge Co

To complete our listicle is the Konjac Sponge company.

They know how to look after your skin by taking Korean beauty secrets and applying them to their skincare line.

The deep cleanser combines peppermint, cucumber and chrysanthemum extracts which calms, expels dirt and refines the skin.

You'll be given a healthy gorgeous glow every time you go to take off your makeup, thanks to this incredible product.

It's hypoallergenic and made with 98 percent of natural ingredients, so even those with the most complex and sensitive skin can enjoy this cleanser.
