The company is already famed for its minimalist approach to brand awareness – but its latest advertising campaign goes one step further: using a sequence of 18 emjois on billboards erected in London.

Depicting a series of well-known traffic and roadworks symbols to reflect the city's notoriously congested roads, McDonalds even added in its own addition to represent drive-thru: it's enough to make a crying smiley face turn happy too.

An image of the billboard was this evening shared on Twitter by social media expert, Jennifer Hassan, who works in London for Viber. She spotted the ad at the Aldgate East tube stop, in the East End area of the city.

Ikea and Coca Cola are some of the other big names who have lately opted to embrace the use of the Japanese ideograms in adverts and promotional drives.

Ikeas's offering was released in February of this year, allowing customers to download images depicting the likes of its famed Swedish meatballs, sofas and bookcases, and the company's instantly-recognisable blue and yellow stores.

Do you love cycling? And Big Macs? Well then, this is the invention for you.

McDonalds has designed a new type of packaging, specifically targeted at those on two wheels.

It is reported that McDonalds is experiencing a dip in popularity – meaning it's had to get inventive to entice people back. And this is the sort of inventive we like!

Those pulling up to a drive-through on a bicycle are given their food in a handy box which has room for a burger, chips and a drink. Better still, it can hang off your handle bar.

It was launched in Denmark recently, and will soon be hitting The Netherlands and Japan. It hasn't been announced yet, but hopefully Ireland will be added to the list soon.

And surely cycling cancels out the McDonalds your about to eat?

Fans of McDonald’s Big Macs are set to be very happy indeed after the fast food chain has released tubs of the famous ‘special sauce’ to be sold in stores…only in Australia though!

For years and years, the sauce in a Big Mac was a closely guarded secret, however now it is well known, though ratios of the ingredients are left a secret.

Now, Mc Donald’s in Australia are offering customers the chance to bring home the Big Mac special sauce, selling it in 25ml tubs in stores across the country.

However, even if you do happen to live in Australia there’s a good chance you won’t get your hands on the coveted bottle of sauce as there is only 200 available with one 50ml bottle being auctioned on eBay with proceeds going to Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Could this be the start of McDonald's selling their sauces in stores worldwide?

This just goes to show, people will believe anything – especially if there's free food involved!

Dutch lads Sacha and Cedrique pulled off the ultimate prank at a food convention in Houten, Holland. They posed as waiters at the event, serving platters of "organic" desserts, chicken and fish… which was actually good ol' Maccie D's food.

First up was McDonald's fruit and melons, which went down a treat with the foodies and bloggers…

And now for the pièce de résistance, the McNugget and Filet-O-Fish combo platter…

Wow, they must really know their stuff *sniggers*

As for the verdict – how would the food served compare to McDonald's?

This is definitely something to use as ammunition next time someone judges you for devouring the entire Eurosaver menu at 4am on a Saturday!

We’ve all seen those videos that claim to lift the lid on what really goes into McDonald’s food, pink slime included.

Well, the original fast food giant is keen to dispel some of the popular – and gross – myths about their products, and have launched a new campaign to do so.

One strand of their PR push has seen a new addition to their FAQs section which seems to debunk to belief that McDonald’s food doesn’t rot. Indeed, they are keen to reassure us that their food can definitely decompose.

Mmm, appetising.

The other aspect of the campaign sees presenter Grant Imhara pay a visit to the company’s meat supplier, where he takes us through the journey of a McDonald’s meat patty.

“Are there lips and eyeballs in there, Jimmy?” Grant asks the plant operator. Thankfully, it’s a negative from Jimmy.

If you’re in need of a little reassurance before your next Big Mac craving, check out the interesting video below.

Not to be outdone by Burger King and their completely black ‘Kuro Burger’, McDonald's in Japan is now offering black Squid Ink (Ikasumi) Burger in time for Halloween.

The burger’s colouring is all natural squid ink, but customers’ pictures show that in reality the burger is a sort of putrid grey-brown rather than black.

The also have a second ghostly white burger for Halloween, which contains the terrifyingly spooky ingredients of chicken and camembert. Yeah, we don’t get it either.

The burgers are being tried out in just three McDonald's branches in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district.

Spooky though they are, we can’t see them making their way over to Irish menus any time soon.

Fast food giant McDonald’s is definitely not a restaurant associated with eating well. Now though, the chain is trying to shake its ‘junk food’ image with a new approach.

The company hosted a dinner event in New York for influential foodies, bloggers and reporters recently. Guests were served dishes prepared using McDonald’s ingredients, but with a ‘fine dining’ twist.

McNuggets with sweet and sour sauce and a parsley garnish were dished up as a kung pao chicken starter. Then, a main course of slow-cooked beef and potato gnocchi made from McDonald’s French fries was served with a fruit sauce. And for dessert, the chain’s biscuit mix was used to create a pumpkin and spice ‘biznut’ – a biscuit and doughnut combo.

Hmm… it all sounds slightly weird to us, like something you might throw together after a drunken night on the tiles!

The dinner was marketed as “a transforming dining experience of ‘fast food’ to ‘good food served fast.’” The strange new dishes won’t be appearing on the McDonald’s menu, but the company has made a concerted effort in recent years to bump up its healthy options, with salads, egg whites and fruit all now available.

McDonald's is still our go-to after a night out, but we're not sure we’d want to pop in for a plate of gnocchi…

A Canadian man called Mark Hayes, and his anonymous friend, decided to take it upon themselves to figure out if McDonald’s food, could look as fancy as what you’d get in an expensive restaurant.

He posted his photos on reddit saying: “My friend and I squared off in the kitchen to see who could turn the ingredients of a Big Mac Meal fancy”.

The photos speak for themselves really – though is it just us, or does a burger in a box look a lot more appetising than when it’s all spread across a plate like this?
