When the 2011 film The Help opened in cinemas, it divided critics. The book of the same name was a bestseller, and its movie adaptation achieved similar success at the box office (it grossed over $200 million), but as many pointed out, it was a film far from perfect. This is largely due to its depiction of the women of colour in the movie and racism in America as a whole. 

The film recounts the story of a young white woman and aspiring journalist Eugenia ‘Skeeter’ Phelan, played by Emma Stone and her relationship with two black maids, Aibileen Clark, played by Viola Davis, and Minny Jackson, played by Octavia Spencer, during the Civil Rights Movement in 1963 Jackson, Mississippi.

And despite the fact that Spencer won Best Supporting Actress at the 84th Academy Awards for her role with Davis receiving a nomination, she has told the New York Times that her role in the film is actually one she regrets playing now.

“Have I ever done roles that I’ve regretted?” Davis mused.

“I have – and The Help is on that list.”

She was quick to point out that while the movie had many positives – including the friendship and bonds she formed with its cast and collaborators – she felt that it wasn't truly the maid's voices who were heard in the end.

"[The experience] and the people involved were all great. The friendships that I formed are ones that I’m going to have for the rest of my life. I had a great experience with these other actresses, who are extraordinary human beings. And I could not ask for a better collaborator than Tate Taylor (the director).”

“I know Aibileen. I know Minny. They’re my grandma. They’re my mom. And I know that if you do a movie where the whole premise is, I want to know what it feels like to work for white people and to bring up children in 1963, I want to hear how you really feel about it. I never heard that in the course of the movie.”

This isn't the first time Davis has shared her concerns with the film. Speaking around the time of the film's release, she said much of the same in an interview,  “I love the fact that [Emma Stone’s character] Eugenia said ‘I am going to write a story from the maids’ perspective of what it feels like to work with these white women’. Operative term being THE MAID’S PERSPECTIVE. I don’t feel like it was from our perspective, that’s the problem I had with it. And I had it from the very beginning.”

We can’t believe it’s been ten years since the release of Twilight. It only feels like yesterday when cinemas were full of teens wearing ‘Team Edward’ t-shirts and far too much eyeliner.

The fantasy films quickly exploded in popularity thanks to the complicated love triangle, the soundtrack full of emo music and twinkly vampires.

The Twilight phenomenon was everywhere you looked back in the day when vampires were all the rage. Photos of Jacob Black were stuck to the inside of locker doors. The giant Stephanie Meyers’ books were stuffed into school bags. People got quotes from the movie tattooed on their body, and some even committed to having Edward Cullen’s face etched into their skin forever.

A decade may have passed since we were first introduced to Edward, Bella and co. but people will never let Robert Pattinson forget about playing the famous ‘17-year-old’ vampire.

You’d think the actor would be tired of hearing about the Twilight Saga, but it looks like the High Life star is ready to return to the rainy Forks, Washington.

In an interview with Variety, the actor teased fans about the potential return of Twilight. “The amount of time I’ve spent moisturizing, I am ready to play 17 at a moment’s notice. Ready!” he joked.

The 32-year-old did admit he was speaking about the franchise recently, “I was literally talking to my agent about it."

It looks like we could be digging out our Team Edward and Team Jacob t-shirts from the bottom of the wardrobe sooner than we think.

Movie lovers, rejoice! Marlay Park has just released the list of movies they’ll be screening at their outdoor cinema event and we cannot wait.

Dlrevents have revealed that they will be screening timeless classics like Mrs Doubtfire and School of Rock, as well as newer releases like Coco and Paddington.

Musical fans, brace yourselves. They’re also screening the glorious Mamma Mia too, so get your dancing shoes on and warm up your vocal chords.

The free movie screenings will take place on Saturday, August 18 and Sunday, August 19.

Outdoor Movies in the Park is the perfect event. The summer may be drawing to an end but what better way to end it than watching a movie under the stars.

You can tune into childhood classics and recent releases on a high definition screen, which is supposedly half the size of a house.

Make sure to bring plenty of blankets and snacks for all the gang as you watch some of the most-loved movies.

You can pick up plenty of delicious treats from the dlr COCO Market before the movie begins. A few market vendors will even open late on Saturday and Sunday to cater for the movie-goers.

The team couldn’t have picked a better selection of movies.

 

Gather up the troops and head along to the Outdoor Movies in the Park on August 18 and 19. The free movie screening is the perfect weekend event.

Crazy Rich Asians

Crazy Rich Asians is the first in a trilogy so if you just can't get enough of Rachel and Nick, jump into China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems. It hits screen on August 15th. 

Three Seconds

Crime lovers, listen up. Scandinavian crime lovers, really listen up. This book scooped Best Swedish Crime Novel of the Year by the Swedish Academy of Crime Writers in 2009. 

Rosamund Pike and Clive Owen star in the movie version so we have a feeling it's going to be a hit. 

We The Animals

The book, centred on three wild brothers who live a rough childhood in rural upstate 1980's New York. has already created quite a buzz. 

Try get it read before August 17th, when the movie will arrive in cinemas to (more than likely) blow your mind.  

Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror

This science-fiction horror novel by Steve Alten was first published in July 1997.

Plot: there is a prehistoric shark that's thought to be extinct. But….it isn't. 

The Darkest Minds

Everyone loves a good dystopian novel, right?

It's the whole group-of-teens-on-the-run-from-the-government thing and the movie adaptation will star Mandy Moore, who is amazing in everything she does.

The Little Stranger

If you're looking to be terrified then look no further.

The setting for this supernatural gothic drama horror ghost story (yes, it is all of that) is a dilapidated mansion in 1940's England.

It looks so, so good – you'll easily finish the book before it's August 1st release, starring Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter. 

To All The Boys I've Loved Before

This one is gaining so much attention already – and it's all down to Netflix.

Lara Jean is the teenage protagonist whose love letters to her past crushes are accidentally sent to them. 

This is the first book in the trilogy – you can get cracking on P.S. I Still Love You and Always and Forever, Lara Jean once you've finish the first one.

There are two very special cinema screenings on in Ireland this month, and you can bring your dog to them.

The Lighthouse Cinema in Dublin and Pálás Galway are each hosting a dog-friendly screening of the movie Up, on Sunday August 12th at 11am.

Up is one of our favourite movies of all time – it'll make you cry like a baby, laugh like a loon and fall more in love with dogs than you ever thought possible. 

So we couldn't think of a more fitting movie to share with our furry BFF, especially considering we can wipe our tears in their fur and no one will ever know.

Tickets for the screenings are available from 1pm today at The Lighthouse Cinema and Pálás Galway.

There is nothing more relaxing than snuggling up on the couch with your pooch watching a movie, is there?

Craving some summer nostalgia?

Rugrats is returning with a new 26 episode series AND a live-action film!

Finally, we can binge watch one of our favourite childhood shows again!

What crazy adventures will these babies have next?

Nickelodeon

Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Susie, and Angelica will be returning in this revived film and series, as well as a whole new world of characters.

Can you believe it has been almost 30 years since the series original air date? The hit cartoon won four Daytime Emmy Awards and six Kids’ Choice Awards.

But don’t worry, the show will still follow the same mischievous adventures we know and love, as the original creators will be returning to work as producers on the set as well.

Paramount Players have announced that the official Rugrats film release date is November 13, 2020.

And we cannot wait to take a trip into the past with the new movie.

“Now feels like the ideal time to reintroduce this iconic cast of characters to a whole new generation of young fans," commented the president of Paramount Players, Brian Robbins.

Nickelodeon has focused on reviving loads of other classic series as well, including the 2017 Hey Arnold series.

It has also been announced that there will be upcoming specials of Invader Zim and Blue’s Clues. 

So get out the sweets and buttered popcorn; the next few years are going to be epic!

Anyone who has read (or more realistically – devoured) Caitlin Moran’s How To Build A Girl knows that this coming-of-age book is going to be a stellar movie.

However, translating books to the screen is always a tricky business, mainly due to the casting.

If you get it right, everything slots into place, but if you get it wrong? Boy, the whole plot can just come crashing down. 

But we are pleasantly surprised with the choice of Beanie Feldstein as the protagonist, Wolverhampton native Johanna Morrigan. 

You might recognise Beanie as Saoirse Ronan's BFF in Ladybird but she is all ready to step into a leading role. 

Caitlin is clearly on board with this casting, replying to Beanie's tweet with, ''my timeline has just been FULL OF LOVE for you today – the womansphere has been alerted to your incoming EXPLOSION of glory and I am so, so, so thrilled to be doing this with you. OH MY GOD IT'S REAL!!!!!!'' 

Reactions to the news were overwhelmingly positive to the 25-year-old as the choice to play Johanna. 

One wrote about the LA-native's announcement, ''I love Beanie Feldstein. She's perfect for this. But can she do an English accent?'' 

The film will follow the book's plot: it's 1990 and 14-year-old Johnna has created an alter ego, Dolly Wilde, after embarrassing herself on on local TV. 

Part autobiographical, it follows Johanna as Dolly who, by 16, is smoking,drinking, writing for a music paper and exploring her burgeoning sexuality. 

The cast also includes Paddy Considine as Johnna's dad and Sarah Soleman as her mum.

On top of that, Game of Thrones star Alfie Allen will play John Kite, an older rock star whom Johanna falls madly in love with.

We are REALLY looking forward to this one!!

Irish actress Saoirse Ronan has already started her 2019 Oscar campaign, judging by the release of her anticipated new film.

The talented star dons an impressive wig, impeccable accent and prepares to clash with fellow Oscar alum Margo Robbie (a surprising cast choice for the role of Queen Elizabeth I) as she heads to battle as Mary, Queen of Scots.

The anticipated film was written by House of Cards' Beau Williamson and based on the biography by John Guy, it revolves around the rebellious and charismatic Mary who chose to fight for her native thrown instead of being Queen of France at just 16.

Widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth I and for a time, each young Queen beholds her “sister” in fear and fascination.

But when Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty, betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones – and change history.

Historical liberties were taken with this one, but this is going to be some showdown, helmed by two incredible actresses at the top of their game.

Scarlett Johansson has disregarded claims that playing a transgender character is problematic. 

The actor is set to star as Dante ''Tex'' Gill in Rub & Tug, a biopic about a transgender man who is also a crime boss.

The movie will take place in Pittsburgh’s underground sex work industry during the 1970's.

The reaction to this news across social media has been widely negative, with many being quick to condemn Scarlett for choosing to take on this role. 

Twitter lambasted Scarlett for taking roles away from people who are actually trans.

One Twitter user claimed that, ''Scarlett's been tone deaf on a heap of social issues,'' while another said, ''Scarlett Johansson…you should check your privilege. Also, and this goes for all casting directors, step up and break the cycle of misrepresentation.''

However, not everyone on Twitter was criticising her choice to play Dante. 

One said, ''it’s a movie!! Who cares, it’s a business!!'' while another user reiterated the fact that she is an actor who is simply doing her job. 

''There is no law that says only trans can portray a trans person in a film. Now f**k off with your insufferable moral grandstanding. Sincerely, A Trans-woman.'' 

Scarlett has responded to this accusations with her own statement to Bustle.

She said: ''Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman's reps for comment."

This response has not been taken well by social media, with many calling it ''trash.'' 

''Clearly ScarJo doesn't’t give a sh*t about the trans community and wants her Oscar,'' one user tweeted.

Others still seem to see her point of view, with someone else pointing out, ''blame the casting director, not her.''

This movie will be the second time that Scarlett will have worked with director Rupert Sanders.

Their last film, Ghost in the Shell also faced major controversy. 

Scarlett was accused of whitewashing the Asian character that she played, which was based off of a Japanese manga character.

''I certainly would never presume to play another race of a person. Diversity is important in Hollywood, and I would never want to feel like I was playing a character that was offensive,'' she told Marie Claire last year.

Summer of 84 is hitting cinemas next month and it is the perfect summer scary movie. 

Set (obviously) in the summer of 1984, the plot centres on a 15-year-old neighbourhood conspiracy theorist Davey, who starts to think that his police officer neighbour might be the serial killer that is being splashed across the local news.

Davey and his gang of friends quickly band together to form their own murder investigation squad, and they soon begin to seriously suspect that the cop, Officer Mackey, is the killer. 

There are obvious comparisons to Stranger Things. Both are set in 1980's America suburbia with a group of teenagers riding around on bikes and chasing unknown dangers. 

However, instead of the supernatural, the dangerous force here is one that's grounded in reality – a serial killer.

Summer of 84 is more of a slasher than anything – think John Carpenter's Halloween's in the 1970's, Stephen King's Carrie or 1990's Scream. 

It seems that the horror genre is really having a moment. 

Box office records were being broken left, right and centre in 2017 when it came to any kind of horror or thriller. 

Jordan Peele's Get Out arrived early in the year, to a rapturous reception and a stunning $175 million at the box office. 

The It remake was a huge surprise, nabbing the highest grossing horror record of all time at the US office, and earning $478 million worldwide. It is also the largest ever opening for a horror movie and the largest September opening of all time. 

These figures speak for themselves and coupled with what is now the pop culture phenomenon Stranger Things, it's quite clear: scaring yourself in the cinema is officially in. 

So, for those of you who love the whole nostalgic kids-banding-together-against-evil like in It or The Goonies, then you're in for a treat with this latest cinematic offering.

The weekend festivities may be over, but that doesn’t mean you have to wallow in your own self-pity tonight. One of the best things to do after a hectic weekend is to unwind and watch one of your favorite movies.

We recommend watching something light and funny to deal with that dreaded Sunday night fear, and luckily enough the perfect Sunday night flick is on TV tonight.

Thanks to the wonderful people over at Universal we’ll be tuning into one of the funniest Sandra Bullock movies.

The Proposal is on at 9 pm tonight and we are beyond excited about it. It’s hard to believe it’s been nine years since the film was initially released.

The hilarious movie stars Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. Bullock stars as the fierce editor whose world flips upside down when she is told she might be deported back home to Canada.

Luckily, the quick-thinking boss puts a plan together and uses her assistant to solve her problems. She tells Reynolds’ character, Andrew, that he must marry her, but he will only agree if she promotes him to editor and publishes his book.

The duo embarks on a trip to Andrew’s hometown where they have to convince his family and their immigration agent that their marriage isn't a complete farce.

This movie is full of witty scenes, touching moments and an infamous dance sequence with Betty White.

We couldn’t think of anything better to watch on a Sunday night.

Lady Bird is one of the most talked about films of the year. The coming-of-age tale touched the hearts of millions across the world.

I couldn’t hold back the tears when I first went to see Lady Bird at the cinema. The tears just wouldn’t stop rolling and it wasn’t because it’s an upsetting movie, it’s because Lady Bird is real.

It’s the coming-of-age movie that we’ve wanted to see for years. It’s brutally honest and has real heart, so it’ll come as no surprise to hear that star of the film Saoirse Ronan is honoured to be part of such a life-changing film.

She gushed about playing the rebellious and relatable Lady Bird in an interview with RTÉ Entertainment.

“It really has sort of become a film for the generation, which is so cool, and so cool to be involved in something like that."

Coming-of-age movies like The Breakfast Club and The Perks of Being a Wallflower hold a special place in the hearts of youths all across the globe.

“I loved things like Rebel Without a Cause and Dirty Dancing. Lots of films that, I suppose, were about a young person figuring out who they were in the world. That seemed to be what I was really drawn to,” Saoirse expressed.

She continued: “Things like Clueless – I think that was such an important film for so many young people when that came out. More than anything, it was about three girls being themselves, and they all had such distinctive characters."

The Oscar-nominated Lady Bird raked in $76.9 million at the box office, Saoirse won a Golden Globe for her performance in the film and writer-director Greta Gerwig has inspired millions of women to get their work out there, but more importantly, Lady Bird became the movie that our generation has needed for years.
