Ticket touting has been a source of considerable discontent in Ireland for decades.

Whether it's for a sporting fixture or music event, the sale of overpriced tickets on the secondary market sparks much heated discussion.

However, it looks like moves are being made to make it a criminal offence following submissions to a public consultation this week.

According to emerging reports, the GAA and the FAI have expressed support for the introduction of legislation which will seek to regulate ticket resale on the secondary market.

Commenting on the proposed legislation, the GAA said: "The current legislation in no way reflects the technological developments of recent decades."

"Touting in its various forms should be classified as a criminal activity with appropriate penalties in place, whether this be on the street, online or private trading of tickets above face value or fraudulent tickets online sites."

Ticketmaster, however, has railed against the idea, stating that the potential move will not yield the desired results.

Confirming their stance on the matter, they said: "Any legislation in Ireland will simply achieve the same effect as seen elsewhere; resale will not cease, it will go offshore and underground – out of the reach of the consumer protection authorities."

The submissions were received by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, with Minister Mary Mitchell O'Connor asserting that the 'widest possible debate' must be undertaken before a decision is drawn on the matter.

We've all fallen upon a pack of painkillers in the throes of a vicious hangover and thanked the universe for their existence, but according to recent research it's worth remembering that they don't come without their own risks.

Drawing a link between cardiac arrest and regular use of non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), researchers from Finland, Germany and Canada warned doctors to communicate the risks associated with the medication before prescribing them after conducting analysis of previous studies and establishing that data relating to 450,000 individuals showed that 61,460 of them had suffered a heart attack.

The study, which was published in the British Medical Journal, illustrated the risk pattern, with authors stating that there was "a rapid onset of risk" for heart attack within the first week of use while risk was highest during the first month of taking the painkillers.

Delving further still, researchers established that taking a high dose between 8 and 30 days was 'particularly harmful' while individuals who routinely take celecoxib, ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen and rofecoxib were between 24 and 58 per cent more vulnerable to the onset of a heart attack.

Commenting on their findings, the authors explained: "Compared with non-use of NSAIDs in the preceding year, we documented that current use of all studied NSAIDs, including naproxen, was associated with an increased risk of acute myocardial infarction."

"Given that the onset of risk of acute myocardial infarction occurred in the first week and appeared greatest in the first month of treatment with higher doses, prescribers should consider weighing the risks and benefits of NSAIDs before instituting treatment, particularly for higher dose," they added.

"Whether you are being prescribed painkillers like ibuprofen, or buying them over the counter, people must be made aware of the risk and alternative medication should be considered where appropriate," surmised Dr Mike Knapton, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation.

Eager to assuage the fears of the public, John Smith of the Proprietary Association of Great Britain explained that the research wouldn't apply to those on lower dosages.

"People taking over-the-counter NSAIDs should not be concerned by this research if they are taking the medicine occasionally for short periods and according to the on-pack instructions."

It should be noted that high doses were considered in excess of 1,200mg a day of ibuprofen, 750mg a day of naproxen and 25mg a day of rofecoxib.

In a move which Imgur user, KrissyKross, hoped would help bring closure to years of domestic abuse, she shared a series of texts she received from her partner during their marriage.

Now divorced, KrissyKross explains that she kept the screenshots of the messages to remind herself how far she had come, and ultimately decided that she was ready to share her experience online.

"My ex-husband was a kind, loving man. That is, until I lost weight (at 5'3" and over 200lbs, it was sort of necessary.) I then got a job," she wrote on the post.

"Suddenly I was cheating, I lost weight to get men, I couldn't buy clothes that fit me after the 80 pounds lost because it showed off my body."

"He hit me and sexually assaulted me. He waited outside my work for whole shifts, not telling me if he was carrying the Beretta M9 he had purchased recently," she confided.

"I wanted to go out with two (female) coworkers for my 23rd birthday. I told him weeks in advance and when the time came he punched me in the face and slammed my head into the floor, only leaving me alone because he had duty that evening. I tried to go to the police in the middle of the night, he tailgated me the whole way."

"I tried to talk to his parents and they told me it was normal in a young marriage and I should reassure him. His father is a pastor in Tennessee and holds this belief."

KrissyKross explains that her decision to leave came after her husband harmed her pets, writing: "While he was at work I packed a bag, my pets, and their food and hid at a coworker's house and called NCIS and the police."

"I spent hours getting bruises photographed, giving my statement, waiting while they put him on restriction."

Giving Imgur users an insight into the events that followed, KrissyKross wrote: "He was charged with a handful of misdemeanors and two felonies. I accepted his guilty plea bargain for 8 months in the Miramar brig on the condition that the felony charges be dropped. The judge wanted to give him 10."

Thankfully, she is doing well today and reflects on her marriage as a time of growth and courage.

"This isn't really a sob story; I'm really proud of what I've done on my own. I just wanted to share for possibly some closure since I never really got that I save these text messages to remind myself how far I've come, not to cry over."

For many women, navigating leers and catcalls is part and parcel of daily life, and while the vast majority are regrettably left to deal with harassment by themselves, we'd like to assume that if they do reach out for assistance, they will be properly supported.

However, one woman's recent encounter on public transport reminded Twitter users that unfortunately this isn't the case.

After enduring a particularly distressing encounter with a man who began 'rubbing his crotch' after she deflected his advances on a bus, Nathalie Gordon left her seat and approached the bus driver for assistance.

Frightened she explained what had happened to the driver, telling Twitter users: "I tell him that a man is rubbing himself on the bus. The driver, a man, says 'he probably isn't – sit somewhere else'."

Nathalie, understandably stunned by the driver's disregard, replied: "Remove him from the bus, call the police – I don't care'."

And in a move which has caused uproar on Twitter since Nathalie shared an insight into her experience, the driver replied: "What do you expect me to do? You're a pretty girl, what do you expect?"

In a series of tweets which have gone viral since their upload, Nathalie laid out, in no uncertain terms, exactly what she wanted from the driver in that situation.

Unsurprisingly, Twitter users have responded in their droves since Nathalie took to the website to voice her concerns, with hundreds of women sharing similar experiences online.

"If you ever see me on public transport or anywhere in London and you feel vulnerable, find a way to tell me & I promise I'll stand with you," Nathalie wrote in response to her supporters.

“I want to be a pain in the ass,” laughed Pieta House founder, Joan Freeman, when speaking to SHEmazing! about her recent appointment as senator to the Seanad.

Reflecting on her decision to push for legislation which would make it illegal for children to be admitted into adult psychiatric units in Ireland, the founder of Ireland’s only free therapeutic service insisted that she refuses to watch the youth of our nation suffer under an inadequate health care system.

Over the course of the last ten years, Joan’s name, the organisation she established in 2006 and their Darkness into Light event has become synonymous with support, empathy and understanding, but despite opening nine branches in Ireland, one in New York and helping in excess of 28,000 individuals, Joan is by no means done.

With a renewed verve and vigour, Joan is currently focussing on child and adolescent mental health in Ireland by proposing Project 95 which seeks to prohibit the admission of children into adult psychiatric wards while offering solutions to issues which may arise under the new legislation.

“Can you imagine how terrifying it must be for a distressed child to be admitted into an adult psychiatric unit?” she asked. “What a bleak picture of the future it must paint?”

Following her determination to highlight the damage such an approach can have on an impressionable child and their distraught family, Joan has been granted a Public Consultation Day which will act as the first step in the creation of a report which will be presented to the Seanad and the Government.

Ultimately, the Public Consultation will facilitate a forum for those engaged with, and affected by, the services and provide a platform for those with an in-depth insight into a matter which desperately needs attention.

“I’ve spoken to a mother who had to sit with her 12-year-old son –  a highly intelligent child – in a very distressed state in an A&E in Waterford Hospital,” Joan told us.

“They were advised to travel to Cork to see a consultant child psychiatrist who was then unable to treat the child as he was outside the hospital catchment area.”

“That child’s parents slept on either side of him that night,” Joan added. “I mean, the lack of interest, the lack of care in this country, is just staggering.”

While understandably galvanised by the Public Consultation Day and the inroads it will potentially make in the government’s approach to children and mental health care, Joan is concerned she will not be able to do enough during her time as senator.

“The senator’s role only lasts as long as the government, ” she reminded us before swiftly turning her attention back to the positive change the Public Consultation is sure to create.

“I am thrilled, I can’t tell you how thrilled, that this is happening. We’re saying ‘tell us your story’, ‘what’s it really like?’ and it’s just so, so important.”

The closing date for submissions to the Public Consultations Committee is Friday, May 12, so if you seek change in the area of children’s mental health in this country, this is your opportunity to make your voice heard.

You can find out more right here or alternatively, visit Senator Freeman’s Facebook page, email joan.freeman@oir.ie or seanadpublicconsult@oireactas.ie.

And if you want to put pen to paper, you can post your submission to:

Clerk to the Seanad Public Consultation Committee
Seanad Office,

According to recently released figures from the Central Statistics Office, one in ten adults in this country are earning the minimum wage or less.

Further to this, it has been established that 38 per cent of minimum-wage workers are aged between 18 and 24, with more women than men earning minimum wage.

As of January 2017, the minimum wage was increased to €9.25 per hour – an increase which was introduced incrementally over two years – and of the 155,100 people who earn that figure or less, 54.4 per cent were women.

According to the figures, 22,500 employees reported that their earnings as being less than the minimum wage while 132,600 reported earning the exact figure.

The findings established that those earning low wages worked in the services industry, with four in five employees reporting as such.

The research also concluded that three in five workers on the minimum wage or less worked part-time.

We may be only days away from the beginning of May, but according to the latest weather forecast, we're in for one hell of a wintery night.

We know; joyful news.

According to the Met Éireann website, a fairly cloudy day today will ultimately give way to a particularly rough evening.

"Mostly cloudy at first today, with outbreaks of rain. Clearer, brighter and more showery conditions will extend down from the north this afternoon. Some of the showers could be heavy with a risk of hail." forecasters explained.

And then the evening kicks in.

"Rather windy tonight and cold, with clear spells and showers, the showers most frequent over Connacht and Ulster. Some will be of hail, with a risk of sleet over high ground."

And in addition to sleet and showers, we have thunder and frost to look forward to as well.

"There is also a risk of thunder, especially in northern and western coastal counties. Lows of 0 to +3 degrees, with frost in places sheltered from the moderate to fresh north to northwest winds," reads the official forecast.

If anyone needs us, we'll be in our fort.

At a time when feminist rhetoric is (rightfully) taking centre stage, it takes a brave woman to reveal she has – on some level – internalised a misogynistic narrative, and allowed it to cloud her judgement at times.

While reflecting on her role in One Day, Anne Hathaway admitted that she feels a sense of shame over her perspective on the work created by the film's female director, Lone Scherfig.

"I am to this day scared that the reason I didn’t trust her the way I trust some of the other directors I work with is because she’s a woman," the 34-year-old admitted.

"I’m so scared that I treated her with internalised misogyny. I’m scared that I didn’t give her everything that she needed or I was resisting her on some level." she continued.

And Anne admits that this wasn't an isolated event, revealing that she often adjusts her perspective depending on the gender of the director.

"It’s something that I’ve thought a lot about in terms of when I get scripts to be directed by women. When I get a script, when I see a first film directed by a woman, I have in the past focused on what was wrong with it."

"And when I see a film directed by a man, I focus on what’s right with it," she added. "I had actively tried to work with female directors, and I still had this mindset buried in there somewhere."

Acknowledging the backlash she may receive as a result of her admission, Anne insists she is aware how this may be perceived and is actively working on adjusting her stance.

"It feels like a confession, but I think it’s something we should talk about… I can only acknowledge that I’ve done that and I don’t want to do that any more."

Despite her apparent regret, Anne has revealed that she has never apologised to Lone directly, but intends to do so
