Reports have been circulating for weeks that Bus Éireann drivers intend to stage industrial action due to proposed pay cuts, and this afternoon news broke that a date has been announced.

According to emerging repots, SIPTU have warned that an all-out indefinite strike will take place on February 20 if the company imposes cuts to staff earnings.

When asked whether drivers would be staging a one-day stoppage or an indefinite strike, SIPTU Divisional Organiser, Greg Ennis, said staging a day's action before returning to inferior terms and conditions would be unacceptable.

Speaking to Newstalk, Greg said "SIPTU could not see beyond all out strike from February 20" if the company proceeded with "unilateral cuts to terms and conditions".

Unite's Regional Officer, Willie Quigley, said he has not given up hope of further talks before 20 February.

Since 2012, thousands of us have been availing of the contactless payment service provided by Allied Irish Bank.

And in recent weeks rumours have been swirling that the bank intends to impose a fee of 0.20c per payment later this month – something which they denied this week.

Reflecting on the five years which have passed since its introduction, AIB reiterated their intentions to continue waiving the transaction fees for contactless exchanges.

Speaking to Newstalk, a spokesperson for the bank said: "We don’t currently charge a transaction fee for contactless as it’s waived."

"We have no immediate plans to charge," they added.

So, you can rest easy, ladies. We're in the clear for now.

In response to President Donald Trump's hugely controversial order which prevents immigrants from certain Muslim country access into the United States, the head of global coffee chain, Starbucks, has insisted the corporation will do everything they can to counter the president's policies.

Speaking in the wake of Trump's executive order, Howard Schultz, penned a statement for the chain's official website which outlines the organisation's plans to hire 10,000 refugees across the globe.

"We have a long history of hiring young people looking for opportunities and a pathway to a new life around the world," he explained after insisting Starbucks would not maintain a silence around the new Administration's actions.

"This is why we are doubling down on this commitment by working with our equity market employees as well as joint venture and licensed market partners in a concerted effort to welcome and seek opportunities for those fleeing war, violence, persecution and discrimination."

While acknowledging that more than 65 million individuals are recognised as refugees worldwide, Howard explained that Starbucks intends to hire 10,000 across five years.

"And we will start this effort here in the U.S. by making the initial focus of our hiring efforts on those individuals who have served with U.S. troops as interpreters and support personnel in the various countries where our military has asked for such support," he continued.

Recognising the need to highlight the disparity between Trump's policies and Starbucks' ethos, Howard concluded by saying the executive order will not influence the latter.

"We are in business to inspire and nurture the human spirit, one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time – whether that neighborhood is in a Red State or a Blue State; a Christian country or a Muslim country; a divided nation or a united nation."

"That will not change. You have my word on that," he concluded.

Meanwhile, members of the public in this country are adding their names to a campaign which urges Taoiseach Enda Kenny to boycott his St Patrick's Day visit to the United States.

Over 20,000 people have signed an online petition urging Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, to boycott the annual St Patrick's Day visit to the United States.

Reacting to President Trump's executive order which prevents immigrants from seven Muslim countries from entering the United States, thousands of Irish people have added their names to the campaign.

Shared on Uplift over the weekend, the Not In My Name petition has gained a considerable amount of traction  – something which has surprised the campaign's director Siobhán O' Donoghue.

"It’s rare we see petitions grow this quickly and gather this much momentum on social media in such a short space of time," she acknowledged.

Elaborating on the fervour behind the campaign, Siobhán explained that its popularity stems from the Irish public's desire to see their leader challenge the ideals of the US president.

"This shows that people in Ireland are disgusted by the behaviour of Donald Trump since he became president nine days ago, and want to see Enda Kenny show real leadership and courage in the face of such blatant racism and fascism on the part of Donald Trump," she said.

Many of those who signed the petition also made the decision to share their reasons with those visiting the website.

"I wasn't going to sign cause I could see how pragmatic politics needs to protect jobs etc. But seeing people with green cards turned away today? Sure there's no appeasing him, he could turn on Ireland for no reason," wrote one.

"So there's no reason to collude with the madness. 'stand for something or you'll fall for anything Ireland," they added.

Twitter is currently awash with similar sentiments from the public, with one social media user writing: "Don't meet @realDonaldTrump & think you're representing Irish people."

"I'm a constituent, and I want @EndaKennyTD to know that I do not support the St. Patrick's visit to the USA #notinmyname," added another.

For more than two decades, Taoisigh have visited the White House in order to present the American President with a bowl of shamrock.

If you've ever shot daggers at a fellow commuter for holding you up while they root through spare change in order to pay for their bus fare, you may be pleased to hear that Dublin Bus intends to go cashless over the next three to five years.

According to emerging reports this morning, the National Transport Authority plans to follow the example of other major cities in an effort to improve travel times for millions of commuters.

As it stands, 70% of commuters use Leap Cards so officials don't envision that the plans will cause any major inconvenience, but those who insist on using cash will be required to purchase their bus tickets in a retailer prior to their journey.

It is understood that fares may be higher for those who choose to use cash to pay for their commute.

Commenting on the proposal, NTA chief executive Anne Graham said: "We have 70pc of all journeys being done through Leap. This has happened in London, and it's worked."

"We would encourage more people to move to Leap, and we would like to see cashless services, where you can't pay in cash on the bus," she added.

A team within the NTA is currently assessing potential developments regarding the Leap Card service which was introduced in 2011.

Earlier this week, we reported on legislation which sought to decriminalise certain forms of domestic violence in Russia.

At the time of writing, the proposal was making its way through Russian parliament.

It was awaiting second approval from the lower house before being approved by the upper chamber and receiving sign-off from president Vladimir Putin.

And according to emerging reports this afternoon, the legislation has now been passed.

While it does still await official approval from both the upper chamber and the president, it is understood that theses processes are considered mere formalities, and having been approved for a second time, the legislation will now become law.

It has been established that the State Duma voted 380-3 to eliminate criminal liability for battery on family members which does not cause actual bodily harm.

This development means that battering a spouse will only become punishable by either a fine of less than $500, a nominal 15 days of 'administrative arrest', or community service.

President Putin has signalled his support of the controversial bill.

If the classic hand-on-hip pose fails us after a few too many gins on a night out, you can be fairly certain we'll pull out the peace sign, and hope for the best.

And while we may cringe at ourselves while trawling through Facebook the following morning, it turns out that that particular gesture does more than make us look like a Miley Cyrus wannabe, but actually poses a genuine risk to our security.

No, seriously.

According to a recent study, displaying your fingertips in a digital image leaves you vulnerable to data hacking.

Investigating the theory, Japan’s National Institute of Informatics (NII) recently conducted an experiment into the likelihood that fingerprints can be copied and stolen, and findings conclude it is possible even from as far as nine feet away.

"Just by casually making a peace sign in front of a camera, fingerprints can become widely available,’ explained NII researcher Isao Echizen. "Fingerprint data can be recreated if fingerprints are in focus with strong lighting in a picture."

Attempting to combat the threat, the NII are said to have developed a transparent film which when attached to an individual's fingertips conceals the unique print, but it won't be available until at least 2019.

Back to the classic 'skinny upper arm' pose, pronto.

As millions of women took to city streets to march for equality last weekend, several women, who were unable to attend official marches, held their own in the hospital where they are currently receiving treatment for cancer.

Taking to Twitter to share photographs of the march in the LA hospital, Allie Oetken wrote: "Couldn't make it the LA march today so we had to do our own protest around the hospital (only got 1 floor– we tried tho)."

Allie, who is currently living with a rare bone cancer known as Ewing's Sarcoma, told Seventeen that being unable to participate in an official march had left her feeling disheartened.

"I've been a cancer patient for two years now and have had clear scans until just about last weekend when they found a tumour on my skull. So I've been in the hospital mostly for pain management while we figure out what the plan is moving forward," she told the publication.

"Well that morning I knew there was going to be multiple women's marches around the country and world and was pretty bummed I wasn't going to be apart of it, especially since my friends were going to the LA one," she explained.

"Well in the middle of my wallowing, I heard another lady squeaking down the hallway chanting something so I went out and joined her and we had put together signs that say "Freedom for All" and things like that and marched with our IV poles as well as some of the nurses."

Allie says she was relieved to have been able to express her desire for equality with millions of other women over the weekend.

"It was small but very meaningful that I got to feel part of it and protest the new President and the gross rhetoric and behaviour that comes with his power and followers when I otherwise would have had to stay sick in bed and essentially be silent."

Twitter, unsurprisingly, has reacted to Allie's post with unbridled optimism for the future.

"This is beautiful. Keep fighting," wrote one while another remarked: "This is so beautiful and powerful."

"This may be my favourite post about #WomensMarch," added another to the post which has amassed 56,000 likes since its upload on Saturday.

Legislation which would decriminalise all acts of domestic violence, excluding rape and serious bodily harm, is currently making its way through parliament in Russia.

Having already passed one reading in the lower house of the Russian parliament, the measure will likely become law if it is passed at a second reading on Wednesday.

The measure must go through a third reading in addition to a final reading in the upper house, however these particular readings are generally considered little more than formalities.

Commenting on the controversy stemming from the proposed legislation, Russian expert, Yulia Gorbunova of Human Rights Watch, appealed to lawmakers to consider the risks associated with passing the law.

"Passage of this law would be a huge step backward for Russia, where victims of domestic violence already face enormous obstacles to getting help or justice," she said.

"The domestic violence bill would reduce penalties for abusers and put victims’ lives at even greater risk," she added,

As it stands, domestic battery in Russia is punishable by two years imprisonment, but this is rarely enforced.

Should the controversial law be passed over the coming weeks, battering a spouse will only become punishable by either a fine of less than $500, a nominal 15 days of 'administrative arrest', or community service.

40 women in Russia die every day at the hands of their spouse which equates with a staggering 14,000 women every year.
