In a move which has understandably lit a fire under Twitter users today, Sky News presenter, Stephen Dixon, appeared to draw a correlation between the clothes worn by women and the likelihood they would be sexually assaulted.

While appearing on Sunrise with co-star Isabel Webster, weather woman Nazaneen Ghaffer, journalist Sebastian Payne and professor Sarah Churchwell, Stephen put forth an idea which was ultimately shot down by his co-stars.

"Is it a dreadful thing to say that if women are out in short skirts and drunk, that they don't need to take any personal responsibility?" he asked.

Rounding on the presenter, Sarah asked: "Let me ask you a question – if you're walking down the street and you get punched in the face, are you responsible for having left your house?"

Attempting to justify his argument, Stephen responded: "I'd be responsible if I was out provoking them."

"It is not provocative to drink. It is not provocative to wear what women choose to wear," Sarah informed the presenter as Twitter went into meltdown over the anchor's extremely ill-advised remarks.

"All vulnerable ppl are complicit in their own assault? Eg when elderly robbed-shouldn't carry cash?" asked one stunned viewer in the wake of Stephen's remarks.

"Shame on you @skystephen for promoting the myth that women are 'asking for it' depending on what they wear," wrote one.

Stephen replied to the accusation, tweeting: "Nobody promoted that myth. What is terrible for everyone is when an issue can't be discussed without accusations flying."

Dismissing the presenter's ludicrous suggestion, another Twitter user contributed: "A rapist rapes a woman because he's a rapist. To even imply she's to blame is shocking."

Speaking in the aftermath of the controversy, a Sky News spokesperson attempted to clarify teh stance taken by the presenter during the debate.

“In his capacity as presenter, Stephen was playing devil’s advocate during a discussion of the controversial findings of the Fawcett report. He was not reflecting a personal view.," they said.

A Starbucks barista has been suspended pending further disciplinary action after they used the corporation's naming policy to taunt a customer with a speech impediment.

According to the Daily Mail, Richard Proctor was in a Kent branch of the global chain when he was handed a takeaway cup which had been used to mock his stammer.

Instead of simply writing 'Richard' when provided with the customer's name, the barista wrote "R R R… ichard" in reference to Mr Proctor's pronounced stammer.

Contacting the Starbucks UK Facebook page to complain, he wrote: "The treatment I received from one of the Starbucks staff was extremely offensive and humiliating."

"Yes I have a speech impediment, and have been subjected to many jokes over the years, of which most I can handle, however there are many people that struggle to cope in public and this could be extremely upsetting for them," he continued.

"This is not unique but for some reason some of society think it's acceptable behaviour. The only difference in this instance is that I was handed the proof instead of having to listen to the comment," he added.

Responding to the incident, a spokesperson for the coffee chain said: "We were disappointed to hear of this customer's experience and have been in touch directly to apologise."

"The actions of the partner involved were unacceptable and they have been suspended pending further disciplinary action. We aim to provide a warm and welcoming environment for all of our customers, and plan to provide additional awareness training for our store partners in future."

Weighing in on the matter, Chief Executive of The British Stammering Association (BSA), Norbert Lieckfeld, insisted Richard's experience was yet another example of the discrimination faced by individuals with a speech impediment.

"This is just another example of the ridicule and thoughtlessness that people who stammer face every day and which makes living your life with a stammer so hard," he said.

A 47-year-old man has been found guilty of rape after a court ruled that his decision to remove a condom during intercourse without prior consent from his partner was tantamount to rape.

The Criminal Court in Lausanne, Switzerland heard that the accused was on his second date with a woman he had met on Tinder in June 2015 when the incident occurred.

Speaking on behalf of his female client, lawyer, Baptiste Viredaz, argued that the accused's actions were comparable to rape as he had imposed unprotected sex on an individual without her consent, and she was not aware until after the fact.

Bolstering the argument, he explained that had the female in the case been aware that the accused had not planned to use protection, she would not have consented to intercourse.

Commenting on the Swiss case, Dr Sinead Ring from the University of Kent explained that the ruling in this particular case may not mirror the verdicts given in other similar cases.

"A lot comes down to what can be proved in court. If it's proved the woman consented to sex with a condom and he changed the circumstances under which she'd consented, it's quite possible he'd be convicted of rape," she explained.

She added, according to Cosmopolitan, "But a jury would have to determine that he didn't have a reasonable belief in consent and just went ahead and did it anyway."

If there's one perfect end to a night out, it's feeling the wind on your face as you and your mates whizz the city streets in the back of a rickshaw.

But, it looks like the end might be nigh for that particular activity if one Fianna Fáil councillor has his way.

While speaking to Pat Kenny on Newstalk, Daithi Di Roiste argued that rickshaws pose a "public safety danger", and suggested that legislation needs to be implemented which will ultimately ban them.

"Last year Dublin City Council tried to deal with this problem by drafting a series of by-laws, but they were told it had to be done by primary legislation," he told listeners.

Highlighting the behaviour he feels warrants a ban, he continued: "It's a free-for-all. You see races going up and down Grafton Street, you see them flying around St. Stephen's Green, it really is dangerous."

Talks between Dublin City Council and the National Transport Authority regarding legislation have been ongoing.

It's been almost two months since a critically-injured Kym Owens was discovered in a housing estate in Maynooth, and her family have not given up hope that those responsible for her injuries will be brought to justice.

Speaking to Sean O'Rourke on RTÉ, Kym's uncle, Thomas McNee, urged the public to come forward with any information they may have pertaining to the 18-year-old's assault last November.

Opening up about the impact the incident has had on Kym's family, Thomas said: "It's been very tough and trying on the family. They've been at her bedside every day."

"The family's lives have been turned upside down in a heartbeat. They're a good, ordinary family and their lives have just come to a complete standstill."

Kym, who is still in a medically-induced coma, sustained two broken eye sockets, a fractured jaw, and a broken nose in the attack which was carried out on November 20 last year.

Paying tribute to the first-year Arts student, Thomas told listeners: "She's a fun and bubbly person who loved her sport. She played football here and she went to school here in Castleblayney."

While Gardaí have been conducting an extensive investigation into the case, Thomas reminded the public that their assistance is of the utmost importance.

"Examine your conscious. It could be your daughter or sister in that hospital," Thomas said.

"So if you know anything please take a leap of faith and go to the Gardai and tell them what you know. Even the smallest piece of information can make a breakthrough."

Fundraising events have been held in both Maynooth and Kym's native Castleblayney over the course of the last seven weeks.

A waitress working in a restaurant in Virginia made headlines this week when the customers she had been serving acknowledged her hard work, but refused to tip her on the grounds that she is black.

"Great service, don't tip black people," wrote the couple after finishing their meal in Anita's New Mexico restaurant.

Speaking to NBC Washington about the shocking message she received on the bill she provided her customers, Kelly Carter said: "It was just total shock, that’s all I can say."

And while the vast majority of us were left stunned by the story, a worrying number of people accused the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People of perpetuating 'fake news' when they shared an image of the receipt on their Twitter page.

"This is fake. you should apologize for perpetuating #fakenews and encouraging ugly assumptions about white people." wrote one Twitter user.

"FAKE! You are a bunch of race-baiting hypocrites. She obviously wrote that message herself. Shame on you," added another.

Echoing these sentiments, another member of the public wrote: "I don't believe a racist would state "Great Service". Probably left cash as a tip and this is another story to be debunked."

Reflecting on the couple's attitude towards her, Kelly told the press: "I looked at the receipt three times because I was shocked, because I’ve never been a server and seen that."

"I keep my head up. You have to keep moving. One hateful remark cannot stop me. You’ve got to forgive and forget and move on," she added.

Responding to those who disputed the authenticity of the story, the NAACP tweeted: "We will not apologize for the truth."

Thankfully, a fundraising page has been set up for Kelly in the wake of her experience, and currently stands at €2,778.

20 years ago, the body of Ciara Glennon was found in bushland outside Perth.

Now, Ciara's heartbroken father, Denis Glennon, has learned that the Western Australian Police have arrested and charged a suspect in relation to his daughter's death.

Denis, a native of Westport Co Mayo, has spoken to the press regarding recent developments in the cold case.

He, understandably, expressed a mixture of emotions when discussing the two-decade long investigation.

"This is a very raw and bittersweet time," Ciara's father told Perth Now.

"We are being updated by the Western Australian Police, and hence it is best that I do not comment on the recent developments."

Ciara, who was 27 at the time of her death, had been celebrating St Patrick's Day on March 14 1997 in the Perth suburb of Claremont when she disappeared.

In addition to charges brought forth regarding Ciara's murder, Bradley Robert Edwards has also been charged with the murder of 23-year-old Jane Rimmer.

Ciara and Jane's killings, along with the disappearance of Sarah Spiers, were documented in Australian press as the 'Claremont serial killings'.

As the United States of America – and the rest of the world – prepares for the inauguration of Donald Trump, Hollywood heavy-hitters and members of the public have taken the time to share the moments which stuck with them during Barack Obama's eight years in the Oval Office.

From recalling changes to foreign policy to paying tribute to his composure during particularly heartwrenching moments in American history, those involved in making Yes We Can: People Share Their Most Memorable Moments from the Obama Presidency didn't hold back when communicating the effect President Obama's two terms in office had on them, both as individuals and members of the wider world.

The video, which has amassed more than 2,000,000 views since its upload in recent days, has been inundated with comments from YouTubers praising the production and sentiment of the video.

"Obama is the most likeable person ever, no one could ever find anything against him. He is able to feel his people's pain and struggles , that's what makes him unique and irreplaceable," wrote one.

"USA will never get another president like president Obama. He is the best we got in this modern time," added another. "The Nobel peace committee that gave him that prize very early in his presidency saw the uniqueness in him."
