The public have taken to Twitter in their droves this afternoon following Katie Taylor's defeat to Mira Potkonen in the quarter final of the lightweight division in Rio.

The highly-respected boxer from Bray has lost her place in the Olympics following the shock defeat, but the Irish public are keen for Katie to know she's still a hero in their eyes.

"Gutted for #katietaylor. She is and always will be a true champion really felt for her giving interview," wrote one while another added: "Katie Taylor is an inspiration,in victory and defeat."
 

Reflecting on the loss, an incredibly tearful Katie attempted to maintain her composure as she fielded questions from reporters in the aftermath of the judges' decision.

"It's very disappointing. It's been a very, very tough year. Suffered a lot of losses this year," she explained.

Explaining that she gave it her 'best shot', Katie went on to thank everyone for their support, and admitted she thought the fight had been going her way.

Despite feeling 'prepared and confident', Katie acknowledges it's hard to maintain those levels, and gratefully accepted the reporter's remarks that following such an incredibly successful career so far she owes her fans nothing.

Selena Gomez sent her Irish fans into a total tailspin last April after announcing that she would be taking to the stage in the 3Arena this November.

As part of the European leg of The Revival Tour, the former Disney star revealed that she would be playing Dublin this winter, and it sounds like she cannot wait to meet her European fanbase.

With a few months to go  – the tour kicks off in Helsinki on October 10th – Selena decided to record a special message for her continental followers, and it is beyond sweet.

"Every single stop that I am going to, I am more than beyond excited to be there and see everybody," she said in the footage which hit YouTube today.

"To be able to travel the world and meet all of my fans means the world to me," she added. (Sorry Justin, that's just how Sel rolls…)

It looks like the tide of opinion has changed on Chloe Khan since she was evicted from the Celebrity Big Brother house on Friday.

While viewers and fellow housemates made no secret of their disdain for Chloe's antics during her time in the house, members of the public have now rushed to her defence since she left the infamous show at the weekend.

Appearing on This Morning earlier today, Chloe fielded questions from hosts Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford, and it looks like the line of questioning went a little too far from many viewers.
 

Referring to her relationship with Stephen Bear, Eamonn suggested Chloe may have been manipulated.

"Did you really have to do some of the things you did?" Eamonn asked before adding: "And also he's pushing your buttons. Matter of fact, he probably pushed more than your buttons."
 

Taking to social media to air their opinion on the CBB segment, one Twitter user wrote: "Eamonn is going WAAAAY over the top interrogating Chloe Khan, give the girl a break."

"Some of the comments made towards #ChloeKhan on #ThisMorning were totally out of order, at least she wasn't bullying people" wrote another.

Slamming the hosts for grilling Chloe so intensely, one Twitter user questioned: "Why are people giving her a hard time?"

"Ruth your coming across a little snobbish, she was a great housemate try complimenting her," they added. (sic)

Proposals are a touchy subject.

Some women give it very little thought while others have a strict set of guidelines which their other halves should adhere to before getting down on one knee.

From public proposals to stealing another day's limelight, men seem to have a hard time getting it right in the court of public opinion – something which the new fiancé of silver medalist He Zi has recently learned.

After coming second in the women's 3m diving, He Zi watched her boyfriend, Qin Kai, get down on one knee in front of billions before popping that all-important question, and not everyone is impressed by his timing.

"Am I the only one who would be a bit upset?" wrote one Reddit user. "I love you babe,but please don't steal the moment of Olympic glory I've busted my ass to achieve."

"Unpopular opinion: I don't think it's nice to put a lady on the spot like that, it feels like your forcing her to say "Yes"," added another.

While some argued that He Zi's boyfriend shouldn't have proposed in front of such an enormous audience and others insisted that he majorly failed on timing front, the die-hard romantics online had his back.

"She won silver, but he gave her the gold," wrote one Reddit user who we're guessing is responsible for the greetings in Valentine's Day cards.

Last October, fans of Olympic diver, Tom Daley, and screenwriter, Dustin Lance Black, celebrated the news that the couple had become engaged.

After coming out in December 2013, 22-year-old Tom insisted he's never felt happier, and many couldn't wait for the couple to set the date.

But it sounds like the big day may have already been and gone.

Taking to social media last night, Dustin shared a photo of himself alongside Johnny Chaillot – the husband of Olympic diver Greg Louganis – and sent Facebook into a tailspin with his revealing caption.

"3M Finals with Johnny Chaillot. Watch out ‪#‎FootballWives‬, the‪ #‎DivingHusbands‬ are in the house. ‪#‎Rio2016‬ ‪#‎Diving‬," Dustin wrote in a post which has been liked thousands of times since its upload.

Leaping on Dustin's use of the word 'husband', fans of the couple wasted no time seeking further clarification on Twitter where Dustin also posted his message.

Hmmm, it sounds like Tom, who secured an Olympic bronze for the UK last week, may have had a lot more to celebrate than his fans realised.

Dalian Atkinson, who once played for Aston Villa, has died after being Tasered by police in the early hours of the morning.

It is understood that police were called to the home of the former Premier League star, who also played for Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa and Manchester City, after responding to an alert.

Arriving at the address in Telford at approximately 01.30, officers from West Mercia Police used a Taser gun on Dalian who ultimately went into cardiac arrest.
 

Despite receiving medical attention, the 48-year-old footballer was pronounced dead at 3am in a case which has now been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Taking to social media in the aftermath of Dalian's death, former colleagues have paid tribute to the Premier League player.

Ipswich Town FC expressed their condolences, writing: "Terribly sad news about our former striker. Our thoughts are with Dalian's family and friends at this tragic time," 

Echoing these sentiments, Sheffield Wednesday paid tribute to the footballer, writing: "The thoughts of everyone at Wednesday are with the friends and family of Dalian Atkinson this morning."

Issuing a statement on the matter, a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman explained: "As he was being conveyed to Princess Royal Hospital, his condition deteriorated and he went into cardiac arrest"

"Despite the efforts of the crew and hospital staff, it was not possible to save him and he was confirmed dead at hospital, shortly after arrival," he confirmed.

According to emerging reports, Nice airport has been evacuated following the discovery of a suspicious package.

It has been established that travellers were advised to leave Terminal 2 after an abandoned bag was spotted at the Air France boarding area just hours after two other 'suspicious' packages were discovered in the same terminal.

Travellers have taken to Twitter to share developments with the public, and it has been established that passengers were able to re-enter the airport approximately an hour after the police removed the package.

The evacuation comes just a month after a terrorist attack in the same city which claimed the lives of 85 people.

And the latest street performer to do so is Allie Sherlock – a young girl whose talent and repertoire brought shoppers to a standstill over the weekend.

Accompanied by an acoustic guitar, Allie gave a haunting rendition of Adele's Send My Love to Your Lover, and soon found herself surrounded by an audience who wasted no time whipping out their phones and filming the stunning performance.
 

Members of the public, who were lucky enough to hear Allie in person, have shared the wealth online, and uploaded footage to both Twitter and YouTube.

Sometimes it can seem like reality stars go under the knife as often as the rest of us get our nails done.

From at-home botox parties to lunchtime lip-fillers, the stars of the biggest reality television shows are no strangers to surgery, but for some it comes down to more than just the aesthetic.

Opening up about her decision to have nose surgery, Ferne McCann explained that it wasn't about chasing a beauty ideal, but a way in which to rectify an issue which has plagued her for years.

With the TOWIE star unveiling the results of her surgery on This Morning today, footage will be shown which gives an insight into Ferne's thought process.
 

Referring to criticism she has received online, Ferne, who has considered going under the knife for years, said: "My nose is my insecurity and it's the easiest thing for them to say… It hurts."

"I'm not getting it done because I want to get closer to being beautiful. It's not about that," she insisted. "It's just something that I don't like, and every day I look in the mirror, it knocks my confidence."

Acknowledging that her reasoning may appear flippant to some who would insist the surgery is unnecessary, the reality star said: "There'll be a lot of people that understand why I'm doing it and a lot of people that won’t."

With numerous co-stars also opting for cosmetic surgery, Ferne isn't alone in her decision to go under the knife, but she may be one of the fortunate ones who doesn't live to regret her decision.

Reflecting on her decision to have breast augmenatation, Chloe Sims recently admitted that she regrets opting for a boob job.

Speaking to Fabulous magazine, Chloe confessed: "I don’t want to ever go under the knife again. My boobs are a bit of a regret."

Unhappy with the end result, Chloe explained that the shape wasn't what she hoped for, saying: "They’re like 1990s perky ones, instead of the more natural-looking boobs you see now."

When it comes to parents of a certain age and social media of a certain type, we're just a little iffy.

While they may have Facebook figured out – and sign off each and every comment with 'Mary and the kids' – that doesn't mean they have the whole shebang nailed.

And when it comes to keeping certain things under wraps, they can't always be trusted as Queen Bey recently learned.

While the star has kept her Instagram updated with the best of them, fans were pretty certain the Halo singer had yet to make her way over to Snapchat… but it looks like they were wrong.

In a move which has 'classic Mam' written all over it, it looks like Tina Knowles has let the cat out of the bag, and revealed that her world-famous daughter has a secret Snapchat account.
 

Taking to Instagram yesterday, Tina shared a faceswap video of herself which she says Beyoncé sent her.

"My baby Beyonce sent me this," Tina wrote. "It's really cool! I have to learn how to do this."

"Her face and my face together. Her voice coming out of my mouth. Or maybe it's her mouth. Hell I don't know! No Snapchat, seriously!" she continued.

Leaping on Tina's comments, social media users wasted no time highlighting the leak in the momager's upload.

"Bey's gotta snapchat and she's hiding it from us!" wrote one while another added: "We need to find out Beyoncè's snapchat!"

Good one, Tina.

We all know Justin Bieber can be a little precious when he wants to be.

From issuing a ban on photos with fans to discarding cuddly toys he doesn't want to share a car with, the Love Yourself singer has never hidden his need to have things his way

And it sounds like Selena Gomez has had enough of his whinging.

It all kicked off when Justin shared a snap of himself with Sofia Richie on Instagram –  a move which appeared to really upset die-hard Beliebers (You know how they can get.)

And instead of turning a blind eye to the snake emojis posted by tweens 'in love' with the Canadian star, Justin got super narky and told his followers he'd be forced to go private if they didn't…you know.. grow up.
 

"I'm gonna make my Instagram private if you guys don't stop the hate. This is getting out of hand, if you guys are really fans you wouldn't be so mean to people that I like," he protested.

Clearly irked that her ex-boyfriend was bitching and moaning while flaunting his supposed new relationship online, Selena decided to weigh in and offer JB a little sound advice.

"If you can't handle the hate then stop posting pictures of your girlfriend lol – it should be special between you two only," she wrote.

"Don't be mad at your fans. They love you." Selena wrote before editing it to read: "They love and supported you before anyone ever did."

Responding to his former girlfriend's jibe, Justin replied: "It's funny to see people that used me for attention and still try to point the finger this way. Sad."

Whether she could care less about Justin's response or not, the former Disney star twisted the knife further by then uploading a collage in honour of her supporters.

Showing Justin how fans should be treated in her eyes, Selena captioned the collage: "My whole life. You matter most. Thank you letting me do what I love every day."

For years, we've heard whisperings that guys don't go for funny girls.

Whether they're intimidated by their wit or would rather sit in silence than enjoy a good belly laugh, these guys genuinely (and unfortunately) do actually exist.

But, thankfully, John Legend isn't one of them.

Opening up about his relationship with Chrissy Teigen, the All Of Me singer revealed that it was his wife's sense of humour which made him realise he was falling for her.

Like most relationships these days, the pair tested the waters by swapping texts and keeping up with each other online, and it turns out Chrissy's way with words reeled John right in.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the singer explained: "At the beginning of our relationship, we were texting a lot and I started to see her sense of humour."

"We would talk on the phone and I started to fall in love with how engaging and witty and funny she is," he revealed.

Like her millions of online followers, John wasn't immune to Chrissy's Twitter skills, adding: "I fell in love with Chrissy over the phone, because she is good with those 140 characters."

As good a reason as any, right?!
