nights out

Gin and tonic has become the go-to drink for practically half the country. The popular beverage has exploded in popularity over the past few years, and we’re not surprised.

As much as we love a G&T, we have to admit that we feel quite overwhelmed when we go to order one at the bar. What gin should I ask for? What type of tonic am I in the mood for? Will they add fruit? Or glitter?

We are spoiled for choice these days, but picking the perfect drink is tricky. Luckily, the Irish Gin and Tonic Fest is here to help.

They have just released Ireland’s best gin and tonic, which is bound to make your nights out that little bit easier.

This year’s festival ran across the 32 counties of Ireland with a total of 132 venues taking part and 16 GIN events throughout the country.

The 2018 edition featured 26 Irish gins that hail from every province in Ireland and are made with a huge variety of both farmed and wild Irish ingredients.

The festival asked the public to vote for their favorite #IrishGnT on Twitter and Instagram or by posting on the Great Irish Beverages Facebook page, and the results are in.

Ireland’s best gin & tonic in 2018 is…

Russell's Saloon & Gin Emporium, Dundalk, Co. Louth.

Bar manager of Russell’s, Jean McGuinness was thrilled with the result: “Everybody is so curious about Irish gin these days and they were excited to meet the distiller of our festival gin.”

“Our choice of using fresh pear with the blueberries went down a storm with our customers as they said the garnish really brought out the fruit in the gin and the bitterness in the Fever Tree tonic."

We love the sound of Russell’s pear and blueberry gin. We’ll certainly have to visit them this summer!

Getting ready for a night out can result in panic and stress if things start going wrong. Here are four common night out dilemmas and how to resolve them without any hassle.

Achieving model pins: Shave your legs the night before tanning
If you don’t want sore legs with all those little irritating red dots, shave the night before. This gives your legs a chance to recover overnight instead of immediately overwhelming your pores with tan after you have only just shaved.

If you have a spot: Don’t squeeze it
As red as it looks now, it will look eight times worse if you start picking at it and make-up will not cover it. Unless it has turned into a white head and you really need to get rid of it, don't touch it. Sudocrem tends to help many people with bringing down the redness of their spots so you could try leaving this on the spot all day before getting ready to go out.

False face problems: Don't panic if your foundation won’t stay on
This can happen sometimes, but the causes vary from person to person. First, relax, then breathe. Try taking it off and apply a layer of powder to your skin before applying your foundation again. If you put on moisturiser just before it, that could have been acting as a barrier and prevented your foundation from staying on. Perhaps try giving the moisturiser time to settle into your skin before applying your make-up.

How to avoid an emotional breakdown about your hair: Wash it the day before
Really fresh hair can be quite difficult to work with sometimes. If you’re looking to style your hair in a way that’s not simply blow-dried straight, we would recommend washing it the day before. Otherwise, it can be tricky to make it stay in position, unless you put in some mousse.

Ever had one of those nights where you spend the entire evening looking after a friend who just got too drunk, too fast? Forget dancing to Beyoncé, you're filling them with pints of water and trying to convince them it's time to head home.

The developers behind a new project called Vive hope to stop nights getting to that messy stage. The Vive wristband links you wirelessly to your group of friends, and each of your heartbeats and hydration levels are monitored throughout the night.

The bracelet vibrates every so often and in order to stop it, you're required to give it a little squeeze – the idea being that if you've had one too many G & Ts, you won't even notice the vibration.

If you or one of your friends doesn't "check in" with a squeeze of the band, the other members of your group will be alerted and can then find whoever's missing using GPS on their phones.

Could be good idea for big nights out – as long as you haven't ALL overdone it on the tequila!

Good food, good movies and good company – nights out don't get better than this!

A few members of the SHEmazing team decided to spend their Monday night at the Foodie Movie Club after seeing some buzz about the monthly event online.

The Foodie Movie Club is run by one of our favourite bloggers, French Foodie in Dublin, and it’s really surprising that someone else hasn’t capitalised on this fab idea before. This great event combines a French movie that has some element of food in it with a beautiful French meal and of course, wine.

The night kicked off in a private cinema screen in the basement of Brooks Hotel on Drury St. The movie of the month was Amelie and every super-comfy seat in the cosy screen was filled with enthusiastic Francophiles.

Afterwards we moved on to French restaurant, La Maison on Castlemarket St, where we were seated communally and served the most delicious meal. In between bites of escargot and mouthfuls of a beautifully flavourful duck cassoulet (who knew a stew could be so sexy?) we got to know our fellow foodies and our charming host, Ketty.

Students, retirees, singles, couples, people from home and abroad – this great mix of people made for hilariously entertaining conversation, especially after a glass or two of French Red.

Tickets are €35 (plus booking charge) and while wine isn’t included in the price, you can purchase it as an extra with your dinner when you’re at the restaurant. Which you no doubt will.

Would we go again? Mais oui! Can’t wait!

1. Tell people you love them

Whether you think someones really hot, or the person who just said something tooootalllyyy hilarious, or the person you just met in the queue. ‘Oh my God, seriously, I actually love you though, like, seriously!’

2. Break out the 90′s music video dance moves

I’m talking Elton John’s epic cheesy tune ‘I’m Still Standing‘ kinda dancing, and shamelessly, then your mate spots you from across the beer pong table, and suddenly it escalates into a serious dance off.

3. Can’t even

What can’t you even? It doesn’t matter, because you can’t… even.

4. Flirt outrageously with your best friend

She is HOT.

5. PDA

Couples are the worst for this, we get it, you’re in love. Take it home please.

6. Karaoke

Despite not having a note in your head, you’re the next Whitney, and nothing is gonna stand in the way of you becoming a superstar.

7. Emotions

Happy to sad to angry to really sad to laughing to really sad again. So many feels.

8. Makeup

You knew it was a bad idea to bring the bronzer. Now it’s being passed around the twenty girls standing in front of the mirror. Ewwww.

9. Bad outfit choices

That snapback does not go with your dress, and no you do not look better in a onesie.

10. Nap

That slump you hit after the first 6 or 7 drinks, then the row that follows when you sneak of for a lie down and your friend finds you having a shhneeeaky kip.

11. Spend the night in the toilet

‘I’m just goin’ for a quick wee!’ Only to emerge ages later when the lights are on and the music has stopped.

12. Drag up the past

Forgiven, never forgotten. Especially after two tequilas.

13. Snapchat/Facebook/Twitter

Nooooooo.

14. Spend all of the money

Who wants a shooooot? It’s on meeee!

15. Make plans

Arranging to meet people who you have no intention of meeting, or arranging dates with people you have no interest in.

16. Hanky Panky

Shifting people you shouldn’t be shifting, the odd one night stand… Blame the beer goggles.

17. Steal

MINE gif

Traffic cones, shopping trolleys, potted plants, beer mats, some ornaments from the neighbours garden and even dogs. Put it back, ya hooligan!

18. Deny that you’re drunk

I’m fiiiiiine

19. Lose everything

House keys, purse, phone, ID, dignity, we’ve all been there.

20. Underestimate

We’ll all walk to that club, sure ‘it’s only 2 minutes away!’, but sober you knows that it’s a good 15 minute trek, and you’re wearing ridiculous shoes, best make that 20 minutes then.

21. Smoke

You don’t smoke, you never have, and you probably never will. You’re coughing uncontrollably, you look silly and your mouth is going to taste like ass in the morning.

22. Talk to yourself

Everyone is guilty of this one. Whether you’re complimenting yourself or just standing at the mirror saying ‘I am soooooo drunk’ to your reflection and pulling faces, it’s pretty hilarious to be fair.

We’ve all been there before, waking up with a hangover from hell and claiming that we will never drink again, only to be in the same boat the week after. And it looks like we’re not about to change.

According to recent research, hangovers neither deter you from drinking nor encourage you to drink more. In fact, the hair of the dog is not as popular as it may seem.

The research analysed the drinking habits of 386 young people who each had to complete a three week drink diary. This resulted in 2,276 drinking episodes and 463 hangovers.

Thomas Piasecki, lead author of the study said: “Drinkers do not seem to be bothered that much by the temporary discomfort of a hangover, since it does not get them to delay their drinking in any meaningful way, and since other studies show that young drinkers often perceive hangovers to be neutral or positive experiences.”

He went on to add: “Experiencing frequent hangovers is a warning sign that should probably prompt you to reflect upon your drinking”.
