This world breathed a collective sigh of relief last night when Leonardo DiCaprio finally won an Academy Award.

After five failed attempts, the actor went home with a Best Actor statuette for his role in the gory drama The Revenant.

Being an Oscar winner at the Oscars is a VERY different experience to being a failed nominee, as Leo learned.

First up, there's a hell of a lot of people in your ear telling you what to do:

Secondly, EVERYONE wants a photo with you:

And thirdly, you get some exclusive privileges at the Vanity Fair after-party, like having your statuette engraved right then and there – much to Leo's delight.

Vanity Fair posted this adorable video today of the actor chatting with the engraver as he watches his award being personalised with a plaque bearing his name.

"Do you do this every year? I wouldn't know," he jokes.

Watch for the moment where he starts nervously drumming his fingers on the counter…Too cute.

Of course, the fact that there are about 100 photographers snapping away no doubt added to Leo's nerves, and would explain why the engraver's hands were shaking like a leaf.

Just another day at work, really.

Four years ago, Sacha Baron Cohen rocked up to the Oscars red carpet sporting his Dictator get-up – and then proceeded to spill ash all over Ryan Seacrest's fancy suit.

And after all these years, it seems that Ryan hasn't forgot about it.

While looking for people to interview last night, the presenter spotted Sacha (who dressed up as Ali G) and quickly told his people, "no, no, no," reports the Daily Mail.

The comedian joked about the snub later in the night before going back over to Ryan and interrupting another interview so he could give the disgruntled host a hug.

Sacha is known to cause a lot of grief – it's how he made his fame – but we're guessing these two will never be friends.

Metallics and spring pastel palettes ruled on last night's Oscars red carpet, and while not everyone got it right, there were a few drop-dead gorgeous looks.

One style winner was Saoirse Ronan, who can rest easy knowing that she made it to the top of many a Best Dressed list today, even if she didn't go home with a Best Actress gong.

The 21-year-old looked breathtaking in a custom-made emerald green Calvin Klein gown, which she said was a nod to her "Irish heritage."

Of course, she wasn't the only one turning heads last night – here's a look at the best and worst of the Academy Awards red carpet.

The Hits

Lady Gaga
Gaga's white ensemble looked like a standard gown from the back, but from the front it was a killer jumpsuit. Love.

Jennifer Lawrence
That sheer neckline tho. J-Law worked it in Dior as always:

Mindy Kaling
Mindy went for understated elegance in a black bodycon number with cobalt blue sleeves and a flowing train.

Pharrel and Helen Lasichanh
Couples' style goals right here:

Margot Robbie
Like Saoirse, Margot went for full-on metallics in a shimmering gold number. While she ran the risk of looking like an Oscars statuette, the risk totally paid off.

Andra Day
The soul singer took things back to a simpler era with a touch of Fifties glamour. If only we could look that perfect in pale yellow…

Sophie Turner
Sophie let her bold red locks do the talking last night, keeping her colour palette neutral in a silver-grey dress and shoes, accessorised with a diamond choker.

The Misses

Kate Winslet
We love you Kate, but that shimmering black fabric is doing nothing for you. Very Debs dress circa 2003…

Alicia Vikander
The puff-ball bottom is retro gone wrong, and the sequin detailing adds nothing. A no from us.- but Alicia took home the Best Supporting Actress trophy so it's not all bad.

Heidi Klum
Heidi rocked up in a what is basically a nightdress, and while we love the pale lavender colour, it's just not an Oscars look.

For only one night, the Oscars sure bring a lot of drama to the table, and on that table is a love triangle.

Sam Smith won an Oscar last night for Best Original Song, and someone seriously rained on his parade afterwards.

Taking to the stage, Sam said, "I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen and he said no openly gay man had won an Oscar.

"If this is the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community around the world."

However, Sam was wrong as Dustin Lance Black – also openly gay – won Best Original Screenplay in 2009.

Justin was obviously a little pissed off at what Sam said, and took to Twitter to shame the singer.

He wrote, "Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé." Ouch.

Justin is engaged to swimmer Tom Daley, and we can't help but think there's a small love triangle going on here.

Every award show has a few awkward moments, but Stacey Dash truly took the biscuit for last night's Oscar awards.

The audience was left in shock when host Chris Rock invited Stacey onto the stage – while he continued to poke fun at the all-white nominations controversy.

Stacey recently said that Black History Moth should be scrapped, and while she shamelessly walked onto the stage.

We think Chris meant for it to be a light-hearted ha-ha moment – but the reaction from Chrissy Teigen was absolutely everything.

She made the face that everyone was feeling, and it got caught right on camera.

Chris introduced her as "the new director of our minority outreach program", and Stacey was met by complete silence going on stage.

Even though the joke fell completely flat, we have full appreciation for Chrissy's face.

This year's Oscar Awards have been right in the middle of a race row, and to make matters worse last night someone mistook Whoopi Goldberg for Oprah Winfrey. #Fail.

A beauty company associated with the awards we're in the middle of all of the glitz and glam on the red carpet but they completely put their foot in it and felt the wrath shortly after.

While the celebs arrived on the red carpet, the beauty company, Total Beauty tweeted, praising 'Oprah' for her secret tattoos.

Many fans copped on straight away, and were rightfully quite angry. The hashtag #ThatsNotOprah even started to trend.

The company soon had to issue an apology tweet saying: "We'd like to apologise to Oprah and Whoopi, as well as everyone we've offended. It was our error, and there are no excuses. We're sorry."

Ouch, better luck next time.

While they might not have nabbed a seat at Sunday's Oscars, the Irish contingent have been out in force in LA this week for some seriously glam pre-parties.

One of the most hotly anticipated events on the pre-Oscars calendar is the Oscar Wilde party, hosted for the fifth year in a row by JJ Abrams at his Bad Robot studios in Santa Monica.

Among the invited guests this year were Sarah Greene, James Corden, Snow Patrol, Lenny Abrahamson and the ever-stylish Amy Huberman, who wowed in a sleek white jumpsuit.

Looking at the snaps of Amy in her plunge-necked, wide leg ensemble, you'd be forgiven for thinking she had dropped thousands on her outfit, but it is in fact from a VERY budget-friendly Irish retailer.

Yup, the jumpsuit is an SS16 offering from Lennon Courtney, stocked exclusively at Dunnes Stores.

Brendan Courtney and Sonya Lennon's label has made quite a name for itself with sleek, colour-blocked pieces that offer a different silhouette from what Dunnes shoppers may be used to.

"Hey @lennoncourtney your jumpsuit has been tried and tested and it totally works, thank you!" Amy wrote on Instagram, also tagging her footwear collection, Bourbon.

The actress wasn't the only attendee who was repping Irish designers.

Singer Roisin O looked stunning in a silver suit from Roz Purcell's Scribe By Roz collection from House of Fraser:

And Xposé's Glenda Gilson nabbed this sheer dress straight off Paul Costelloe's London Fashion Week AW16 catwalk:

We love seeing Irish designers getting some international coverage – keep it up, ladies.

As claims her marriage is on the rocks, and even further claims that she's secretly seeing grime artist, MC Meridian Dan, Lily Allen has launched an attack at the BRIT awards for not nominating any grime or rap artists.

She slammed "music industry figures" for not paying attention to un-signed artists and said that people who "work at major labels" are focusing on the wrong thing.

The singer wrote on her Facebook page a lengthy rant about her feelings, and let's just say, she didn't hold back.

"The voting academy consists of 1000 music industry figures', and here lies the problem, music industry figures don't necessarily care about music, they mostly care about themselves, they vote tactically for their labels artists to win or so that their competitors at other labels DON'T," she began.

"Skepta JME and Stormzy are all unsigned artists, who would gain from them winning anything? In fact them being nominated or even winning poses a direct threat to 'music industry figures'.

"Imagine if Skepta or Stormzy won , who would they thank in their speeches, who's ego would get massaged?"

"The artist could benefit immensely that's for sure this is an an example music industry figures throwing artists under the bus for personal gain and it's not a culture , it's a religion."

We can see another nominations controversy starting.

For the first time ever, the Academy Awards are taking drastic steps to tackle the diversity issue that is plaguing the acclaimed awards ceremony.

Cheryl Isaacs announced yesterday that historic alterations are to happen that will change how the awards are conducted from now on.

"The Academy is going to lead and not wait for the industry to catch up," said a statement by Isaacs.

"These new measures regarding governance and voting will have an immediate impact and begin the process of significantly changing our membership composition."

So what exactly do these new measures entail?

Members who have been enjoying lifetime voting rights will now be restricted and only those who have been active in the film industry in the last ten years will be entitled to vote.

Three new seats will be appointed to the top tier of the Academy and these measures are hoped will see the number of women and diverse members double in the next four years.

PHEW!

Considering that a survey conducted in 2012 revealed that of the five thousand members of the Academy, over ninety per cent were Caucasian and over fifty per cent were over the age of sixty, we reckon these measures could make a significant difference.

This year, the Oscars faced serious criticism from fans and the film industry alike who were quick to point out that the lack of diversity noticeable in the majority of this years nominees.

Since the Oscar nominations were announced, there was a lot of controversy surrounding them, especially with Jada Pinkett Smith.

Will Smith's wife made a public video about how she wants fellow actors to boycott the award show, since her husband, and other black actors got overlooked in the nominations.

Some thought she was right to voice her views, and others thought she was wrong. Will's ex Fresh Prince co-star, Janet Hubert, even made another video to say what she felt about Jada's views.

But now, Will Smith himself has stepped up and revealed what he really thinks.

"I was knocked over. I was happy to be married to that woman but I appreciated the push," he told Robin Roberts on Good Morning America.

"There's a position that we hold in this community and, if were not a part of the solution, we're a part of the problem."

And even though the Oscars president said she was disappointed in the outcome, Will said that he still won't be attending the show.

"My wife's not going. It would be awkward to show up with Charlize Theron. We've discussed it and we're part of this community, but at this current time, we're uncomfortable to stand there and say, 'This is OK.'"

Do you think he's making a mistake?

After her outburst during the week, Jada Pinkett Smith has thanked Oscars president Cheryl Boone Isaacs.

The president of the awards admitted to being "heartbroken and frustrated" by the all-white nominations, which were announced this week.

Jada made a very public video and promised to boycott the award show next month, but Cheryl had a very quick response and insisted that the organisation is going up for a review.

Mrs Pinkett Smith then took to social media saying: "I would like to express my gratitude to the Academy, specifically Cheryl Boone Isaacs, for such a quick response in regard to the issue at hand. I look forward to the future."

Jada's husband, Will Smith was hoping for a nomination for his role in Concussion, but didn't make the final five. Will's ex-co-star, Janet Hubert, who played Aunt Viv in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, also spoke out yesterday about Jada's public video.

During the week, Jada Pinkett Smith delivered a rather powerful message about no black people being nominated for the Oscars.

Will Smith was overlooked for his role in Concussion, and since the nominations were announced, Jada wants to boycott the awards ceremony.

In the video, which was posted by TMZ, Jada says, "Maybe it's time we pull back our resources and we put them back into our communities, and we make programmes for ourselves that acknowledge us in ways that we see fit, that are just as good as the so-called mainstream."

She also made it clear that she won't be attending the Oscars this year.

But now, Will's former co-star, Janet Hubert, who was the original Aunt Viv on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, has ripped into Jada, saying that she is a sore loser.

"First of all, Miss Thang, does your man not have a mouth of his own with which to speak," Janet said.

She then goes on to say that there are worse things happening in the world: "People are trying to pay bills and you talking about some motherf***ing actors and Oscars."

You really have to watch the video to believe it.
