The sun has finally returned to Ireland and the temperatures are soaring. Rumour has it we could experience temperatures of 27 degrees next week. We rarely get treated to sunny weather here on the Emerald Isle, which means we certainly revel in every ounce of sun we can get.

Once the sun comes out we’ll have barbeques every other day and dust off our holiday clothes that have been hidden away in a suitcase since we got back from Spain.

The warm weather may be wonderful, but we must remember that animals may find it extremely difficult to deal with the heat.

Thankfully, the ISPCA has reminded us pet owners of the importance of minding our furry friends during the summer.

The charity stressed the importance of leaving out cold water for your dogs and cats. Make sure to put the bowl in an accessible and shaded part of your house or garden.

They also urged pet owners to provide shelter for their pets where they can take a break from the heat if they need to. Remember that animals need to cool down too, so supplying a spot in the shade from them is vital.

The ISPCA added that leaving your dog in the car is extremely dangerous.

They tweeted: “Temperatures could reach 28 degrees this weekend. The ISPCA would like to remind pet owners that leaving their dogs in the car in hot weather can be fatal in minutes, even with the windows down #dogsdieinhotcars”

Don’t neglect your pets during the heatwave.

Are you in the market for a pet, but you really cannot decide what breed to go for?

Well, we’ve been there, so we thought we might start going through some of our favourite dog breeds, and help you make the decision.

Our first dog breed? Greyhounds – the most docile and sweet animals ever.

Here are 10 brilliant reasons to adopt a greyhound:

1. You’re saving a life.

After a brief racing career, many Greyhounds will be put up for adoption. When you adopt a Greyhound you’re saving a dog in need. By adopting you’re helping to make room for these rescues to help other animals in need.

2. They are extremely gentle and affectionate.

Greyhounds are very gentle dogs and are naturally reserved. They also have have wonderful manners indoors – they’re quiet, clean and gentle.

3. They are incredibly friendly.

If you’re looking a dog that’s easygoing and known for being well mannered when meeting new people, then a Greyhound will make a perfect companion.

4. Low maintenance in terms of health.

Because of generations of breeding based on only the healthiest and most talented racers, greyhounds do not suffer from congenital illnesses as much as other breeds might.

5. They make great apartment dogs.

You may be surprised, but greyhounds are quiet indoors, laid back, and love to lounge around in their favourite comfy spot. They’re actually happy to lay around all day while you go to work, and require less exercise than many other breeds.

6. They tend not to shed much.

Due to their smooth, low shedding fur, greyhounds make great house pets. They are also one of the few dogs proven to be less of a risk to those with asthma and other allergenic reactions.

7. They’re easy to groom.

Their short coat is sleek and easy to care for – easily maintained by weekly grooming and an occasional bath.

8. They’re robust, and tend to live long.

Compared with many other dog breeds that are similar in size, Greyhounds have an longer average life expectancy of 10-13 years. Due to their selective and careful breeding for the track their health concerns are considered minimal compared to other breeds of the same size.

9. They hate the rain.

Greyhounds are notorious for their hatred of rain – so that will save you having to walk them when the weather is miserable.

10. They are so darn CUTE.

I mean, COME ON. Look at their gorgeous little faces! How could you not want one?

Listen, I am a dog person, through and through.

HOWEVER, I personally think that cats get themselves a bad rep, and they don’t deserve it!

I decided to set the record straight by asking my cat-loving friends why they love their furry felines.

Here are the reasons that cats make the ‘best’ pets.

cat banana GIF

1. No vermin problem.

Okay, the first merit I have to give cats is their ability to repel all kinds of critters. Take mice (and rats… shudders), if you have a feline friend in your home, chances are those small furry pests will avoid you. Ann if they do try to come into your home, your cat will probably end them – and deliver you their body as an offering. Weird, but damn efficient.

2. They don’t mind being left alone.

So with dogs, you can’t help but feel guilty when you leave for work in the morning. However, the cat is probably happy to see the back of you – purely because they really enjoy their own company. It is pretty comforting to know that they’re happy out just lounging around all day.

3. They’re super playful.

Cats tend not to get the credit they deserve – especially when it comes to their playfulness. Cats LOVE messing around, playing with toys and all that good stuff.

4. But also love chilling out.

On the other end of the spectrum, cats love just laying around all day, relaxing! If you just want to sit on the couch all evening and have a good cuddle, then cats are the lads for you.

5. The purr.

Sorry, but is there anything more relaxing than hearing your cats gentle purr? No. No there is not.

6. That sweet litter box.

One of the major cat perks is that they can be trained to use a litter box. Rather than having to bring them outside every time they need the loo, they simply go in the box, and you clear out the box as you see fit. Simples.

7. They can mind themselves.

Many cat owners allow their furry friends to roam the streets, and give them accress to a cat door. There;s never any fear that they won’t return. Cats are very street wise, and know how to handle themselves.

8. They can be HIGHLY entertaining.

Have you ever actually googles cat memes and videos? They’re actually GAS. So even if you don’t actually own a kitty, you cannot deny the fact that they’re freakin’ hilarious.

I mean it didn't come from nowhere – dogs really are a '(wo)man's best friend.'

Listen, as an animal lover, I genuinely like all animals, but dogs take things to another level for me.

My dog, Tipper is his name FYI, is the absolute LIGHT of my life.

When I come home from work, it's his little face I look forward to seeing the most (sorry mum).

And I know for a fact that I'm not alone in my feelings – but what is it about our gorgeous doggos that has us falling so in love?

Well, allow me to lay out the facts:

1. They're so frickin' CUTE.

Can we just take a moment for how gorgeous dogs are? Seriously, my sweet pupper is 12, and everytime I look at his I swear he gets cuter. He has aged like a fine wine, as all dogs do. I'm not choosy, I love them ALL, and can hand-on-heart say that I think all dogs are cute, even the weird ones.

2. Those sweet sweet cuddles.

Sorry but is there anything better than flopping onto the couch after a long day of being a kween, to find your ANGEL hopping up next to you? No, there is not. There's something so comforting about having your dog nestled up beside you.

3. They don't talk back.

I have gone on absolute RANTS to my dog about stuff that just happens to be bothering me (yes, kind of crazy, I know). The best bit? He doesn't talk back. I don't need to be told that I'm 'overreacting' or that I'm being a tad 'dramatic', and thankfully, dogs just sit there, starring at you as you go off on one. Ideal set up, tbh.

4. They make you happier

So, actual studies have been done in this department. Apparently, interacting with a dog lowers your stress levels, which ultimately leads to more relaxation, better moods, and less anxiety. One study even found that dogs are more effective at lowering people’s stress levels than their significant others. Amen to that!

5. They get you moving.

It can be pretty hard to get your ass off the couch sometimes, but we all know that fresh air is suuuper good for you. Thankfully, we know our doggos need walking, and we must oblige them, therefore, we get a bit of exercise too. Handy excuse not to go to the gym – 'have to walk the dog, sorry hun'.

6. They love you unconditionally.

There's a lot to be said for being loved unconditionally – and dogs are the perfect example of that level of love. Think about it – you can accidently step on them, or give them a little smack when the pee on your new runners (it happens), but they never cease to adore you.

Man's best friend has never had more meaning… EVER.

Lily Cardone and her family have a 10-year-old dog called Sebastian.

The Cardones have had this cutie since he was 9 months old, so he is a real member of the family at this stage.

Sebastian recently had surgery on his ACL, and Lily's father was truly concerned about his canine BFF.

According to Buzzfeed, Lily's dad sends his wife flowers all the time, so when a bunch of roses arrived everyone assumed they were a romantic gift.

HOWEVER… the flowers were for Sebastian, and came with a card that read: “Sebastian, Feel better, you’ll be back in the game very soon. Love, Daddy."

Could you just DIE?

Lily shared pictures of the flowers on Twitter, along with amazing shots of Sebastian checking out his gifts… and the Internet couldn't handle it.

Thousands of retweets later, Sebastian has become somewhat of an Internet sensation!

None of us will deny the fact that, sometimes, the things we love most are actually bad for us (chocolate, chipper, drinking, etc.).

Another fact we cannot deny is that dogs LOVE playing fetch, whether it’s a stick, ball or a frisbee… they just love it.

You may be wondering where we’re going with this, but keep reading…

Image result for puppy carrying stick

APPARENTLY, playing fetch is actually really bad for dogs (who knew?), and we’re really sad about it.

Image result for puppy carrying stick

According to a report published in the BMC Veterinary Research journal, “when dogs carry things in their mouths, it puts additional strain on their front legs, which over time can be harmful. It apparently makes them tilt forward”.

How sad for them!

The study found that “when a dog is carrying a toy weighing around half a kilogram, they distribute 66 percent of their body weight on the front legs”.

However, when the weight was increased to 4kg, 75 percent of the weight shifted to their front legs… not good, folks.

The study does not say you should stop playing fetch with your furry friends; just try and ensure that the toys you’re using are as light as possible.

She has a trio of Italian greyhounds, and a long-haired dachshund as well as sharing a rare-breed bulldog (reportedly worth tens of thousands) with her on-off rapper beau Tyga.

But it seems that Kylie Jenner is happy to add to her pack: she's just been given ANOTHER new pup.

Turning 19 next week, it is believed that the small tri-colour pooch is a birthday present from her BFF Jordyn Woods.

Her current crop of greyhounds are christened Sophia, Norman, and Bambi. Then her dachshund is called Odie, and the bulldog named Rolly.

This time, Kylie has settled on Penny as the moniker for her latest canine.

Unsurprisingly, the reality TV star has been posting numerous Snapchats of Penny… all of which we have to say are SERIOUSLY cute.

The almost 19-year-old (her birthday is on August 10) regularly reveals on social media that she misses her animals when she's away travelling and certainly she's known as a major animal-lover.

Earlier this year – while responding to suggestions of animal cruelty by online observers – Ms Jenner gave insight into the pampered lives her dogs lead.

Posting a two-minute video entitled K-9 Care to her website, she revealed that her pets eat a purely organic diet, drink only filtered water, have two walks a day, regular pamper sessions and constant human companionship.

Kylie furthermore has an adopted rabbit named Bruce.
