Hailey Baldwin has hit the headlines daily over the last while, but mainly for her relationship and pre-celibate marriage to singer Justin Bieber.

However, something more pressing has occurred to us about her that we feel compelled to share; her skincare regime.

According to Refinery29, Hailey's secret formula for protecting her skin is actually: nappy rash cream? Oh, this we have to hear.

Apparently, she deals with her share of breakouts herself which are linked to birth control, which she has only started a few months ago. Contraceptives and hormones are well-known to wreak havoc on our pores.

She's still in the honeymoon phase in terms of her wedded life with Mr Biebs, but how is her skin so damn radiant? 

"For me, I do think a lot of it is genetics. Both of my parents have great skin; they look super young. I also think it’s how you take care of your skin. There are some girls that I know who sleep with their freaking makeup on and their skin is clear. That is not a thing for me," she said.

She opened up about how birth control is affecting her skincare:

"I think sometimes, like with hormones, you can’t control it. Over the last few months, I’ve been on birth control, which I’ve never done before, and that threw off my hormones for sure and made my skin go off. I was getting little tiny things here and there, and they just hurt."

"I talked about it with my doctor and came to find it’s because the hormones from the birth control mess with your natural balance. You just have to be patient, let it happen, and let it even out. Here's where the nappy rash cream comes in…

"I use any normal spot cream — something that has a good acne fighter, like benzoyl peroxide. The problem with that, though, is it burns my skin a little bit and my skin is so sensitive and it gets dry so easily."

"I have found that diaper rash cream is a great thing for bringing down redness and healing. If you think about what it’s actually used for, which is red bumpy skin, it’s essentially the same thing. Diaper rash cream is great for under-eye bags, too."

Those of us who go head-to-head with our oily skin daily will relate to the eternal struggle of wanting to have hydrated skin, but trying not to look like a high-shine mirror throwing out spotlight reflections from our faces. IS THIS TOO MUCH TO ASK, PEOPLE?

It’s fine. I’m fine. The shine show must go on.

Now that it’s Winter, the game is changing. We’ve put together a Beauty Bible of sorts on the Great Oily Skin Battle of 2018. It’s a thing.

Our skin of course is more than just dry, oily, acne-prone etc. We are nuanced beings, and this is no different when it comes to our skin.

The question is, why do some of us suffer more from oily skin in the winter, and others suffer with dryness?

It seems unfair, between having to glue ourselves to our hot water bottles and getting up when it’s still dark, why should our skin be causing us problems on top of that?

Michele Farber of Schweiger Dermatology Group claims that: “Skin can become more oily as a mechanism to compensate for excess dryness. The skin will overcompensate in sebum or oil production to moisturise itself.”

1. Prioritise and Moisturise

You might think that moisturising skin which is already oily is a mistake, how ever oily skin compensates for excess dryness, so keeping it hydrated is KEY.

The right moisturiser for you is like getting a bra fitting, it can be a hassle but so worth the results if you’re patient enough. Each and every one of us has unique skin cells, so it can be next to impossible to find the skin regime for us.

2. Watch your Tone

3. Avoid using petroleum jelly
According to make-up artist Katey Denno, petroleum jelly (Vaseline) can create the illusion of granting us moisturised skin, but actually the substance suffocates your pores.

It’s water-repellant and not water-soluble, so it actually just seals the barrier so that moisture cannot leave the skin.

4. Tea Tree Oil

Hot showers in the winter are widely recognised as stripping your skin of it’s essential oils, thereby preventing it from achieving moisture.

By using tea tree oil with warm water, this makes up for the loss of moisture and brings your skin back to its supple self in no time.

5. It’s all about keeping the pores happy

Changes in the weather make our pores hella cranky.

Environmental causes are some of the major factors in skin issues, meaning that our pores have a bit of a ‘mare in the winter especially. Our skin has its own survival techniques which can be the bane of our facial lives, but really it’s just trying to do it’s job.

6. Don’t let it dry out

Farber also claims that “If your skin is dry, it’ll often feel tight and have a white-ish flaking more diffused all over the face. Oily skin will often concentrate around sebaceous areas, like the T-zone, and pores in this areas may be visibly larger.”

7. Keeping your skin cleansed is a MUST- no matter what type you are.

Clean towels prevent oily skin and breakouts, so they’re essentially your undercover guardian angel. Wash them at LEAST once a week, folks.

There are few women in this world who don’t genuinely care about what they look like, and usually that begins with their skin. While we haven’t made it to ‘bare-leg’ season just yet (and who’s to say we ever will?), there are few among us who haven’t – at some point – experienced the dreaded strawberry leg after deciding to showcase our pins in warm weather.

Dubbed the ‘strawberry leg’ due to its resemblance to the fruit, the skin on our legs can develop small red dots after a waxing or shaving session, but not many of us know exactly why.

Well, wonder no more, ladies.

According to those in the know, the pores on our legs widen and fill with oil during hair removal which attracts bacteria and dead skin cells.

When they begin to oxidise, the pores turn a darker colour and before we know it, we’re sporting a pair of ‘strawberry legs’.

Speaking to Byrdie, makeup artist, Carly Hobbs, insists that there is one handy hint which will always help conceal this.

“You can banish the appearance of pesky pores on your legs by firstly giving them a rinse with cold water – the chill factor encourages them to close.”

Large pores are a problem that plagues so many of us.

There is nothing worse than when you have had your make up on for a few hours and you go to check yourself in the mirror, and all you can see staring back at you are big pores glaring under your foundation.  

They occur for a number of reasons. Mainly, it is genetics and loose collagen in the skin that cause the unruly blemishes.

But luckily, there are methods to reduce their size and to help them from becoming blocked.

Take a look at these five steps to minimising and unclogging your pores.

Keep them unblocked

Pores that are unclogged are more likely to look smaller than those that are blocked. One of the best ways to remove any unwanted oil and dirt from your pores is with a clay mask. When you apply the clay mask, leave it on for around five minutes (depending on your chosen brand) and you will start to notice your pores appearing through the mask. When you pull the mask off your face, the clay should take what was blocking them with it.

Deep cleansing

As tempting as it may be, squeezing out blackheads can actually result in the damage of the skin. Deep cleansing pore strips should remove the blackheads you are trying to get at, but without damaging your face. However, do not use them more than twice a week as then they can then be quite harsh on your skin.

Use oil-based cleansers

Despite what you may think, oil-based cleansers actually work best for cleaning out blocked pores. The oil that appears on our faces is more easily dissolved in oil than in water.

Sun cream and other UV protective creams

Over time, UV damage will make the pores larger. This is because the sun’s rays thin the skin and damage its collagen. If you do not want to load your face with sun cream before putting your make up on, many primers and foundations have an SPF in them to protect from UV rays.

Limit the shimmer

Shimmering, or “luminizing” make up can emphasise the pores when it is applied in the wrong spots (or, all over the face). To avoid this, use matte products and only apply shimmering make up to areas with naturally smaller pores, such as the bridge of the nose, or the cheekbones.

Leaving your make-up on for too long doesn’t end well, especially if you fall into the habit of keeping it on while you sleep.

Of course we’re all guilty of sleeping with make-up on every now and again. But, it’s important that it doesn’t become a routine and here’s why.

The pores that cover our skin are a passage way for sweat and sebum to make its way to the top of your skin.

Sebum, which is a waxy liquid that helps keep the skin moisturised also helps get rid of dead skin cells and other dirt that shouldn’t be on your skin.

Wearing make-up for too long will clog your pores and stop the sebum from doing its job. Instead, the sebum will build up in your skin and cause acne – every girl’s nightmare.

So if you don’t fancy waking up to unwanted pimples, it’s always a good idea to wash your face before bedtime.

Don’t forget the eyes, ladies, (unless of course you want to wake up with an eye infection).
