Making the change! NUI Galway is introducing gender neutral toilets
NUI Galway will be one of the first Irish universities to install gender neutral bathrooms on its campus.
The new facilities will be rolled out in the next academic year, and it will cover all of the bathrooms in the main buildings on campus.
The NUI student union said: "Gender neutral bathrooms create private, individual spaces that are open to all people. Traditional female/male sex-segregated bathrooms are not accessible spaces that everyone can use and feel comfortable in.
"NUI Galway Students' Union advocates for the rights of the diverse population of 17,500 students attending the University," the statement adds.
The college's student president said of the decision: "This is a big step on the road to a more inclusive and equal campus for all."
The University of Limerick and University College Cork are also working towards introducing gender neutral facilities.
