Have you ever noticed when you go to the hairdressers, your stylist seems to be rummaging through an endless drawer of hairbrushes?

Well, as it turns out there's actually a pretty good reason for it. Hair stylist, Ally Myette, spoke to Women's Health about the various uses of different brushes.

“Not all brushes are created equal, and they do totally different things for the hair," said Ally.

“There are so many different hair textures and styles, that when creating a specific look, choosing the appropriate brush is key to achieving the desired end result.”

So, since we're not all hair stylists and most of us can't tell our paddle brushes from our vent brushes, here's a handy guide on what type is right for your hair:

Paddle brush

Think of the paddle brush as the holy grail of brushes. It's great for all types of hair, especially those with longer or thick hair and it's also THE BEST for fighting knots.

Essentially it's a wide, flat brush that most often has plastic bristles covering its round edges.

Vent brush

The vent brush is very similar to the paddle brush. It can seriously cut down drying time because the bristles and shape help to reach hair at every angle.

And if you’re a curly girl who prefers a straight, smoother texture, this can help you achieve that look.

“Thanks to its metal base, the brush heats up a lot faster, which gives you greater control of hair flow and texture,” says Ally.

Small round brush

If you're rocking a short do' like Kylie Jenner, then this brush will become your BFF as it smoothes out your locks and rounds off the edges.

It can be found in three different styles; boar bristle, metal or plastic. But no matter what your round brush is made of, the shorter your hair, the smaller the brush should be.

Large round brush

Naturally very similar to its smaller counterpart, the large round brush can create larger waves and handle greater amounts of hair.

Despite its monster size, it will catch all your hair and give it the perfect amount of volume.

Smoothing brush

A smoothing brush is best used to achieve a straight and silky look – so stay away if you have curly hair as it will totally frizz.

This brush has strong bristle, which makes it perfect for shoulder-length or long hair. It's also great if you want to create a glam updo as it can hold everything together.

While most people don't have distinct face shapes (you could have a mix of a square and round or oval and diamond-shaped face), some people do have one that you can clearly recognise.

"Your face shape tends to reveal your basic personality and your overall approach to life," says Jean Haner, an expert in face reading and the author of The Wisdom of Your Face.

Jean spoke to Cosmopolitan and explained the most common face shapes and what they say about you, based on her studies in 3,000-year-old reading techniques derived from Chinese medicine.

Interested? Then, read on.

Rectangular Face Shape

This shape of face is squared off at the forehead and chin. People with this type of face are really good thinkers and value logic; but they often over-think.

They are usually the planner in a group of friends but don't talk much about their feelings. However, they do like to stay in shape as they have to work off whatever is going on inside their heads.

Rounded Face Shape

A round face usually has a wide hairline and fullness below the cheekbones. This type of face usually means you're a people person who is very kind and giving, and you always put others first.

But sometimes, you put other people first too much and then you tend to not get what you need in the relationship.

Diamond Face Shape

This type of face is pointed toward the forehead and chin, and wide around the middle. This shape typically means that you like to take control and want things done a specific way. You are also very detail-orientated and produce a great quality of work.

You can communicate well with others but can also be harsh and sharp in your words too.

Oval Face Shape

An oval face is more longer than wide and the jaw is smaller than the cheekbones. This shape means you always know the right thing to say and you make other people feel comfortable and welcome.

That said, sometimes you can be too focused on saying the right thing and worry about what others think of you too much.

Pear or Triangle Face Shape

This face shape is narrower at the forehead and wide around the jawline. It usually means that you take charge in most situations, and the smaller your forehead is at the top, the more control you want to have. But, because you are always so driven, you end up successful.

The Advertising Standards Agency has ruled that pyramid shaped tea bags really are better than round ones.

Tetley filed a complaint against their rival PG Tips as they felt their advert showing the difference in ‘brewing power’ between a pyramid and a round tea bag was exaggerated and misleading to viewers. However, the ASA’s decision states:

“We considered consumers would interpret the visual demonstration to be a representation of a simple consumer experiment and would not interpret it as a representation of a detailed scientific test.

“We considered consumers would interpret the demonstration to mean that, in general, a pyramid tea bag was more efficient at brewing tea than a round tea bag.

“Unilever provided test results which showed that the infusion of tea, at 40 seconds and two minutes into brewing, was greater when using a pyramid tea bag than when using a round tea bag.

“We therefore concluded that the ad did not exaggerate the capability and performance of the advertised product and was not misleading.”

So there. It’s official – pyramid tea bags are the best. Though we don’t think either Tetley or PG Tips could hold a flame to Barry’s or Lyons!
