A man accused of harassing Sharon Ní Bheoláin on several occasions will face trial next year.

The 40-year-old Portmarnock resident will appear in court charged with harassing the RTÉ News anchor at various locations between October 2013 to February 2014.

It's understood that the man, named as Conor O'Hora, is also being charged with possession of child pornography in text communications and images.

Mr O'Hora appeared before the district court in Dublin earlier this month where he was served with a book of evidence.

His case was then sent to the higher Circuit Criminal Court.

According to The Irish Times, at the defendant’s first appearance, the district court heard “in reply to the charge after caution the accused had nothing to say and was handed a copy of the three charges”.

The case is due back before the courts on February the 20th where Mr O’Hora will enter his plea on the three charges.

Katie Ascough, the former president of the UCD Student Union, elaborated on her pro-life stance while speaking with Marian Finucane on RTÉ Radio 1 this weekend.

Katie, who was impeached after making the decision to remove information pertaining to abortion from the university's Fresher handbook, told the host that her pro-life stance also applies to cases of rape.

The 20-year-old, whose pro-life opinion intensified after her mother suffered a miscarriage in recent years, explained that while she considers rape 'an abhorrent crime', she feels a termination is an unwise response.

"Rape is one of the most abhorrent crimes towards women and I completely condemn it. In fact I think we need to look at having more serious sentences for rapists in Ireland," she said.

“But at the same time, I do not think that abortion is the answer to this," Katie added.

Arguing that women who terminate a pregnancy following rape essentially punish the foetus as opposed to the father, Katie suggested that increased support would reduce the number of women who opt to abort in these cases.

"The child should not have to bear the brunt of their father’s crime. The child should not be essentially sentenced to death for what their father has done."

"I think we need to support them in as many ways as we can but at the same time, when it comes to bodily autonomy, there are two people involved in a pregnancy," Katie said.

"A child’s heart starts beating at 21 days. And I don’t think we can ignore that."

Katie was voted out of office by 69 per cent of voters last month.

Last night Six One viewers bid a sad farewell to Bryan Dobson, who has co-anchored the programme for more than 20 years.

However, it's not just Bryan who will be leaving the Six One news desk, as his co-anchor Sharon Ní Bheolain will also be taking up new roles within RTÉ.

Sharon, who started her career with RTÉ back in 1994, is set to present the Nine O'Clock News on rotation with Eileen Dunne, but will also remain as a presenter of Leaders Questions.

And while Bryan will join the Morning Ireland team on-air from November 1, Sharon will be the new presenter of Crimecall on RTÉ One.

So, who will replace the Six One dream team?

Well, RTÉ News today announced that Keelin Shanley and Caitriona Perry will take up the reins on the RTÉ Six One News from January 2018.

Broadcaster Keelin Shanley who currently presents News at One on RTÉ Radio 1 and Crimecall on RTÉ One, will be joined by RTÉ's current Washington Correspondent Caitriona Perry, as co-presenters on the flagship programme.

Announcing the new appointments, Director of RTÉ News & Current Affairs Jon Williams said: "For over a decade, Bryan and Sharon have set the standard for TV News in Ireland and I couldn't be more grateful and more excited as each embarks on new challenges for RTÉ News."

"I’m thrilled that Keelin and Caitriona will bring their intellect, competitive drive, and focus on storytelling to RTÉ's Six One News."

"In a news environment where we are bombarded by opinions and half-truths all day long, there’s no bigger challenge than to make sense of it all on Six One – and no better new presenting team to do so."

Times are a-changing, ladies.

He may have insisted he didn't want to be discriminatory, but Senator Terry Leyden still managed to do so when he recently suggested that certain sports were outside the physical capabilities of women.

Speaking to the Seanad, Senator Leyden revealed that he did not support the idea of female rugby teams due to the physical nature of the game.

“Funnily enough, I am not a great advocate of women's rugby,” he said. “I am not over enthusiastic about it from a health point of view.”

Suggesting that us women folk might be better served in a different field, he went on to say: "Rugby is a very physical game.  I think there are certain games more suited to women, and I do not mean to be discriminatory."

“I mean it from the point of view of the future health of women rugby players," he added.

Unsurprisingly, the remarks went down like a lead balloon, with RTÉ sports broadcaster, Evanne Ní Chuilinn, quick to add her voice to the discussion.

Taking to Twitter to dismiss Leyden's apparent concerns, Evanne quoted: "Rugby is very physical" before adding: "So is giving birth."

The tweet has been celebrated by hundreds of social media users this week, with one responding: "For the love of God! Does Senator Leyden want us to go back to the days of comely maidens dancing at the crossroads?"

"Sometimes I feel like the world is going backwards," wrote one Twitter user while another added: "Reminds me a bit of the old ‘women can’t run far because their uterus’ will fall out’ adage."

Senator Leyden has since retracted his remarks, issuing a statement, reading: "I regret the offence caused to Women’s rugby by my recent comments."

"I have been contacted by a number of people regarding the participation of women in rugby and realise that my point of view was ill informed."

Tonight, television viewers across Ireland will tune in to see Bryan Dobson deliver the Six One News headlines one last time.

After 21 years as co-anchor, the legendary broadcaster has set his sights on Ireland's radio waves where he will join co-presenters Rachael English, Dr Gavin Jennings and Audrey Carville as a main anchor of RTÉ Radio One's Morning Ireland from next week.

Not one to make a “big fuss”, Bryan has said he will celebrate his new career move by heading out for a meal with co-presenter Sharon Ni Bheoláin, followed by a “few drinks” with their colleagues.

According to reports, an RTÉ insider said: “Bryan was reluctant to make a big deal about leaving because, the way he sees it, he's only moving across the room.”

“He would be happy enough with a low-key affair.”

Bryan's replacement is expected to be announced in the coming weeks, but in the meantime it's understood a rotating schedule of news presenters will fill the role.

A number of presenters have already been tipped to succeed Dobson, including Ray Kennedy, David McCullough and Keelin Shanley.

Farewell Dobbo, you'll be missed.

Last month, The Sunday Independent revealed that RTÉ news presenter Sharon Ní Bheoláin earns €60,000 – €80,000 less than her male co-anchor Bryan Dobson.

This led to a major debate about the gender pay gap in Ireland.

RTÉ published a list of its highest earning presenters, of which only three were women.

Ryan Tubridy, the highest earning presenter and number one on the list, has weighed in on the issue:

'In every field of life, whether it’s the workplace, home, finance, that gap has to be closed,' he said, according to The Irish Times

'Whatever is broken, needs to be fixed. There’s no question for me and it’s very obvious, there shouldn't be a disparity.'

'I’ve got two daughters, two sisters and a mother that I love.'

'My feeling would be that on anything to do with gender and disparity and any gap, in that regard, needs to be closed. It’s as simple as that.'

In case you're unaware, Fifty Shades of Grey made its debut on Irish television last night, and as Christian and Anastasia got intimately acquainted, Irish viewers devoted an inordinate amount of time to their phones.

All too aware of our Holy Catholic Ireland reputation, the Irish public spent hours sending themselves up on Twitter.

From catching family members engrossed in the plot to insisting the S&M storyline was too tame, Twitter was easily as entertaining as the movie causing the influx of posts.

And here, ladies, is just a sample…

1. Shook altogether.

 2. We did it, lads.

3. A fair estimation.

 4. Well, now.

 5. Classic Mrs. Brown.

Minister for Equality, Charlie Flanagan has said he wants to see progress on the gender pay gap issue across all sectors of society and stated the problem is “much bigger than RTÉ.”

It's been estimated that men earn on average 14 per cent more than women in Ireland, a figure Mr Flanagan said was “too high”, adding: “I want that narrowed.”

He made the comments at the launch of a consultation process in which members of the public were invited to take part.

Employers, educational institutions, trade unions and members of the public will now have six weeks to make submissions on what can be done to tackle the situation.

The issues came under the spotlight after the BBC published a list of its highest earners, most of whom were men.

RTÉ then followed suit by revealing the pay details of its top 10 highest earners for 2015.

Only three women made the list – Miriam O'Callaghan, Marian Finucane and Claire Byrne.

Mr Flanagan said he eager to hear the public's opinion and invited RTÉ to participate in the process: "I invite RTÉ and all other stakeholders to participate in what can be an exciting endeavour as we move towards the equality agenda and narrowing the gap that I've said is far too broad."
