The theme of this year’s Late Late Toy Show has been revealed as host Ryan Tubridy and a cast of hundreds prepare for the most magical night on Irish television.

Host Ryan Tubridy said: “Having The Greatest Showman as our theme this year is helping to emphasise the essence of what I believe the Toy Show should be – inclusive. This year we are celebrating the kid who doesn’t get Snapchatted, or who doesn’t always have someone to sit beside on the bus. These kids aren’t lonely or unhappy, they just find joy in their own way. This year’s Late Late Toy Show boasts a huge cast with more than 200 young performers and over 30 talented toy testers taking part. The children come from all over Ireland with the youngest just three and a half-years-old

As always, Ryan and the Late Late Toy Show elves have a few surprises up their sleeves and all will be revealed as the show goes on.

The circus themed set has been created by RTÉ production designers Marcella Power and Caroline Wade, and the elves in the RTÉ Costume and Make-Up Departments have been busy rewriting the stars over the past weeks as they ready the cast for Friday’s spectacular.

As with every Late Late Toy Show, a number of charities have nominated children to experience the magic of the set for themselves in advance of tonight’s show. This year children from LauraLynn Children's Hospice, The Jack and Jill Children's Foundation, National Children’s Hospital at Tallaght University Hospital, Our Lady's Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, and Barnados will get a sneak preview of the set and get to play with the toys. Earlier in the night, The Late Late Toy Show Unwrapped will give viewers a chance to look back at some of Ryan’s standout moments in his 10th year at the helm of the Toy Show at 7pm on RTÉ One.

No matter where you are The Late Late Toy Show will be available to watch worldwide for free, both live and on demand for up to 30 days, on RTÉ Player across Desktop, iOS and Android. Last year the show was viewed live in over 100 countries outside of Ireland. In the lead up to the main event, viewers from around the world can also watch a host of clips and extras on RTÉ Player featuring some of the best moments from The Late Late Toy Show over the years in The Late Late Toy Show Collection.

Last night marked the annual Irish Book Awards. Talented authors suited up and put on their best dress to anxiously await the final results.

Some of those included in the nominations were Emilie Pine, Graham Norton, Sally Rooney, James Kavanagh, and the Aisling girls Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen.

The Late Late Show’s Ryan Tubridy was also in attendance to support the winner of RTE Radio 1’s The Ryan Tubridy Show Listener’s Choice Award: Skin Deep by Liz Nugent.

Nugent’s compelling thriller also took home the trophy for the Irish Independent’s Crime Fiction Book of the Year.

Ryan Tubridy is delivering a massive treat this week for RTÉ viewers, both for rugby fanatics and the 1990s generation.

Fresh from his heroic performance on Saturday which saw Ireland defeat the All Blacks, man of the match Peter O'Mahony is dropping by RTÉ One studios to discuss the immense victory, and what the team has planned for 2019's World Cup.

The charismatic scientist joins Ryan to explain his passion for unpicking the infinite universe around us, and tells us why he's going on tour to bring science on the road.

Whether you're a nerdy fan or a total science novice, he's a fascinating guest to watch speak.

Fr Tony Coote was diagnosed earlier this year with Motor Neurone Disease and chose to walk the length of Ireland to raise awareness and funds for sufferers.

Some of the entrants for Carer of the Year will also be guests on tomorrow nights show, so it's the perfect chance to hear about the amazing work they do in incredibly intense circumstances. 

Mario Rosenstock will be providing the comedy element with his renowned impressions, and music will be from The Stunning who are joined by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra.

There is also a pair of tickets to next week’s Late Late Toy Show up for grabs in the viewer prize, perfect for the kids to come along to.

The official date for this year’s Late Late Toy Show has been revealed and we may be more excited than the kids.

As cringe as it is, the Toy Show never fails to make us smile.

We never thought watching Ryan Tubridy prance around dressed as Woody from Toy Story would get us in the festive mood, but it did.

Watching the Toy Show has become one of the biggest Christmas traditions here in Ireland and we honestly wouldn’t have it any other way.

Presenter Ryan Tubridy announced the date for this year’s show on his RTÉ Radio 1 show and it’s just around the corner.

Fans don’t have too long to wait to see what Christmas jumper Tubs will be rocking this year because the 2018 Toy Show will air on November 30.

“I had to try on my particular outfit this week that will be featuring on the opening of the Toy Show on November the 30th and that means Christmas is in the heads of a lot of people already,” the Late Late Show host revealed.

The Toy Show never fails to disappoint us, even thought we feel extremely jealous of ALL the prizes the audience bring home.

We can’t help but wonder will a certain boyband make an appearance on this year’s show? Westlife did just confirm their reunion tour.

The Late Late Show will hold the first major television debate of the referendum on the 8th amendment this Friday night.

As campaigning for the upcoming referendum gathers pace, representatives of the Together For Yes and LoveBoth campaigns will be in studio to put their cases forward for the repeal or retention of Article 40.3.3 of the Constitution.

Helming the debate, Ryan Tubridy will also be joined by people who will tell their own personal stories around the issue. The debate will also include questions from invited members of The Late Late Show audience, from both sides of the referendum campaign.

Debbie McGee dazzled on the dancefloor reaching the final of Strictly Come Dancing at 59 years old. On Friday night she will be sharing the secret of how she did it and how appearing on the show has given her a new lease on life following the death of her beloved husband, magician Paul Daniels. She’ll be telling viewers about their 28 year marriage, living in the spotlight, and what life has been like since Paul passed away.

Plus music from singer-songwriter Miles Graham and Something Happens.

An archived clip showing a baby-faced Ryan Tubridy making his television debut in 1989 is doing the rounds, and people reckon he's a charming young fella altogether.

Appearing on RTÉ's Scratch Saturday, 16-year-old Tubs discusses a number of books about Irish rockers, U2.

Now, while the topic may not invite the most exciting of conversations, teenage Ryan delivers some well constructed reviews and even manages to slip in a joke or two.

Clearly dedicated to the subject at hand, he goes on to identify three types of U2 fan – the casual fan; the nouveau fan (or post Joshua Tree fan); and the obsessive fan.

Remaining cool, calm amd collected throughout the segment, it's clear to see that the Late Late Show host was destined for a career in front of the camera.

In fact, many people have pointed our how little the broadcaster, now 44, has changed over the years.

Same look, same mannerisms, same posh accent – some things never change!

As the entertainment industry pays tribute to the man behind one of the most iconic magazines of all time, Ryan Tubridy has been quick to highlight the incongruity of Hugh Hefner's lifestyle in today's society.

Commenting on the passing of the 91-year-old Playboy publisher and reality TV star, Ryan mused over the life and times of Mr Hefner, and admitted that he struggled to understand his place.

"It does, particularly given the last five years and the way society has moved, he does seem to represent something from a past very, very far away now," Ryan asserted during his radio show yesterday.

"That whole smoking jacket and young women around him in this weird house. [We] will look back on it in years to come and say: 'It just was a very peculiar story."

Despite admitting he 'didn't like him at all', Ryan was keen not speak ill of his passing, adding: "Obviously rest in peace and all that, but wasn't one for me."

"I don't mean that in a prudish way by any means, it just feels like it is another day's work altogether," he clarified.

The 91-year-old, who began his publishing career in 1953, is understood to have passed away peacefully from natural causes.

In an Irish television exclusive, Ryan Tubridy will sit the down with the former US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.

In what promises to be a “very engaging interview,” viewers will gain an interesting insight into the mind of the presidential candidate.

The wide-ranging interview touches on many topics including Hillary's love of Ireland, her presidential campaign, and of course, how it felt to lose the US presidency to businessman and reality TV star, Donald Trump.

“I would have been really unhappy if I had lost to a normal Republican. But to lose to someone who I believed profoundly was not ready for the job, was temperamentally unqualified for the job, was such a burden. I just thought 'I’ve just let everybody down, I’ve let my country down, I’ve let the world down. How did this happen?'”

Hillary will also discuss the potential dangers the Trump presidency presents to the world as well as the double standards faced by women in politics.

This unmissable interview airs on The Late Late Show, this Friday, September 29,  at 9.35pm on RTÉ One.

Last month, The Sunday Independent revealed that RTÉ news presenter Sharon Ní Bheoláin earns €60,000 – €80,000 less than her male co-anchor Bryan Dobson.

This led to a major debate about the gender pay gap in Ireland.

RTÉ published a list of its highest earning presenters, of which only three were women. 

Ryan Tubridy, the highest earning presenter and number one on the list, has weighed in on the issue:

'In every field of life, whether it’s the workplace, home, finance, that gap has to be closed,' he said, according to The Irish Times. 

'Whatever is broken, needs to be fixed. There’s no question for me and it’s very obvious, there shouldn't be a disparity.'

'I’ve got two daughters, two sisters and a mother that I love.'

'My feeling would be that on anything to do with gender and disparity and any gap, in that regard, needs to be closed. It’s as simple as that.'

Tomorrow evening's Late Late Show will be incredibly emotional: it will feature an interview with Bernard Lucas.

He is the husband of coast guard volunteer Caitríona Lucas, who tragically died during a rescue mission in September last year.

The mum-of-two was the first member of the Irish Coast Guard to lose their life during a rescue mission off the coast of county Clare in September last year, after she and two other crew members were thrown from their boat when it capsized during a search operation for a missing person.

Tomorrow night her family will be in studio to talk to Ryan Tubridy about the devastating impact of her death.

She was described by her 20-year-old son, Ben, as having a great love for "the sea and the coastguard… her work in the library, especially the projects with the children. My mother had lots of great qualities. She was caring, honest, kind and, above all, dedicated.”

Caitríona was also a mum to daughter, Emma.

The show will be celebrating the work of the Irish Coast Guard and the RNLI, and hearing from members hailing from all around the country.

There will also be stories from people who owe their lives to the tireless efforts of those organisations.
