Ryan Tubridy

For the last ten years the always-tantalising Taste Of Dublin festival has been a major date in all foodie diaries.

And this year the celebrations take place from this Thursday June 11 to Sunday June 14 in the Iveagh Gardens in the centre of Dublin.

As usual, there is a host of brilliant events lined up for the weekend, with everything from BBQ inspiration to a sushi master class being covered.

It’s not just celebrity chefs you can mingle with either: favoured famous folk such as Rozanna Purcell, Louis Walsh, Ryan Tubridy and Lorraine Keane have all indulged at the festival previously – so keep your eyes peeled for a well-known name.

If you like your A-listers with a little more culinary expertise, then the likes of Clodagh McKenna and Kevin Dundon might well suffice – though they're just two of the all-star chefs lined-up to attend.

And following a fairly awful May (we're calling it Mayember), here’s to hoping the weather stays dry because nothing says summer-time like a few drinks in the sunshine.

Don't forget that the Bulmers Bar is pairing up with the Old Spot gastropub for some delicious tastings, and that O’Brien’s is offering a “try before you buy” experience throughout the festival.

Caffeine-enthusiasts are in for a treat too as Nespresso will be on hand with a tasting lounge when you need that coffee fix. Seattle's Best Coffee will also be in attendance, so you'll be spoiled for choice.

If you really want indulge over the weekend then take advantage of JUST EAT’s exclusive waiter service. They line up for your food so you don’t have to. Bliss! Basically, it allows you to sit back and get on with eating all of the food. Which is what's important in life.

And while it’s technically part of the family fun zone, there’s also going to be a load of Minions running around on Saturday and Sunday. After all, who doesn’t want a selfie with a Minion?

Finally, the Powerscourt Hotel Resort & Spa is going to be scouting for some of the best-dressed attendees on Friday, so make sure your OOTD is on point if you want some incredible goodies.

Former Irish rugby pro Ronan O'Gara was forced to publicly apologise today after making an unfortunate remark on Friday night's Late Late Show.

When asked by host Ryan Tubridy whether his proudest achievement was having had five kids under the ages of six with his wife Jessica, or scoring 2,625 points for Munster during his playing career, the sports star answered, "I wouldn't be nervous getting up on Jessica but I would be nervous kicking a ball."

Cue gasps from Ryan and raucous laughter from the audience, with Ronan trying to calm things down by referring to Jessica as "a champion of a wife."

While it definitely made for great TV, it seems Ronan's wife Jessica wasn't too happy about the whole thing!

Ronan took to Twitter today to apologise for any offence he had caused and to let followers know he had smoothed things over with his wife, writing, "Back home in Paris. I have apologised to @jessieog and i'm also sorry if i offended anyone else with my very poor joke on @RTELateLateShow."

Bet there was some serious grovelling done over the weekend!

Hazel Behan spoke on The Ryan Tubridy Show on 2FM yesterday where she recounted her rape experience, and now her story is making headlines worldwide.

The brave woman told Ryan how she was raped in Portugal back in 2004 when she was working at a resort as a rep. Telling the presenter how she had always felt a ‘presence’ in her small apartment where she lived alone, she was awoken one night by a man in a black mask calling her name.

What Hazel endured next was very hard for both for her to recall and for Ryan and listeners to hear. She was tied up and raped for four hours: “It feels so surreal, like I’m talking about something from Law and Order Special Victims Unit. I shut off. My thing was to figure him out, I’m going to get out of this, I won’t let him beat me.”

Her rapist was never found, with Hazel saying that the police didn’t take it as seriously as they should: “I think they wanted to protect the holiday industry, they didn’t want it to be known that this happened in a holiday resort.”

Hazel’s story has left a huge imprint on the Irish people, and now beyond that as people took to Twitter to applaud her bravery for bringing her story to the forefront: “I want to do this for other girls, I want to tell people not to give rape victims the pity eyes, it does happen, it’s not something that you just see in the movies, but at the same time people must be sensitive to what other have gone through.”

The newly crowned Rose of Tralee Maria Walsh chatted candidly to Ryan Tubridy about her sexuality last night on the Late Late Show.

After her win last month, Philadelphia Rose Maria Walsh revealed in an interview that she was "gay and proud."

Ryan was quick to ask her if it the subject had been broached by the judges. "'Are you a lesbian?' That wasn't asked, no," said Maria. "If it was ever going towards that I would have openly said it."

Despite being tipped as a favourite to be crowned Rose, Maria said she was shocked when the result was announced. "I wasn't expecting to win," she said.

Executive Chairman of the festival, Anthony O'Gara, also had a few things to say yesterday – he published an open letter on the Rose of Tralee website, criticising the Irish public's view of the festival as merely being a "Lovely Girls" contest.

"We are not interested in stereotyping women. We celebrate exceptional women and accept them as the proud people they are, whatever that might be," said Anthony. "Roses and the rest of us live in the real world where bad things happen and people struggle."

Well said, Anthony!

The was a lot of coverage of Maria Walsh, the 2014 Rose of Tralee, coming out as gay, and many people wondered why this was news. After all, it IS the 21st century and a person’s sexuality shouldn’t be an issue anymore.

However, Ryan Tubridy explained why it was covered in all the papers:

“It’s a massive deal. Not so much the fact that she’s gay but the fact that she is, I think, the first gay Rose.

“And I would qualify that by saying ‘the first gay Rose to come out’. I think when you look at the number of all the Roses down through all the years, do you think she was the only gay Rose?”

Tubridy then did the maths, and revealed that it’s very unlikely that 100% of the Irish rugby squad are heterosexual:

“I say the same thing about the Irish rugby team. Do you think that all 15 of those boys are heterosexual, you know, full-blooded males? Probably not. Statistically one of them’s probably gay.”

However, Ryan says that whoever he is, he won’t be coming out anytime soon, because while it’s easy for people to say that being gay isn’t an issue anymore, coming out to the public is still a frightening prospect:

“Will he come out? No, no he won’t. Why not? Because that’s why this woman is in the papers today, because she’s come out.

“A lot of people I think are still not willing to come out, particularly at a young age. They’re in the public eye, they are concerned by what people will say still.

“So for all the talk of saying, ‘sure look there’s no news in that, sure it’s easy being gay in the 21st century and 2014′, I don’t know about that.”

Radio and TV presenter, Ryan Tubridy, wants all of his fans to know he is alive and well following a satirical newspaper saying he was “found dead inside”.

Waterford Whispers is a fictional newspaper and yesterday uploaded an article with the headline: “Ryan Tubridy Found Dead Inside”.

However, Ryan managed to see the funny side of the article and uploaded a selfie to the 2fm Facebook page writing: “To quote Mark Twain – ‘Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated’. He’s alive and well and back on 2fm at 9am tomorrow morning.”

Many fans of The Late Late Show presenter were outraged at the article and called for it to be removed, but Ryan took it all in his stride: “I know some people took it seriously, but it’s satire, they were just having a joke … I enjoy satire and I’m prone to taking the mick out of people myself.”

Good on you, Tubs!
