Sexual Harassment

by

Just days before facing allegations of sexual harassment, Al Porter spoke to Hot Press about his thoughts on the sexual assault accusations pouring out of Hollywood at an alarming rate.

The comedian is facing claims of sexual harassment, groping and misconduct from four fellow comedians.

Speaking exclusively to Hot Press, Porter described the Weinstein scandal as being a 'watershed moment culturally where what is seen as decent and acceptable behaviour is going to change.'

A post shared by EF Creative Studios (@efcstudios) on

The comedian condemned the actions of abusers, and said that from this point onwards, many people would be drastically changing their behaviour.

'I don’t care how provocatively a woman dresses, or how late at night she arranged to have a business meeting with you,' he said when asked about consent.

'Or whether it was in your hotel room or not. If you’re grabbing her and she doesn’t want it, you’re in the wrong,' he told the music mag

Porter, who has been accused of groping a number of men, went on to say:

'I would hate to tar a comedian with that brush, but it is my experience that if you are in a gay bar, if I had a euro for every time I was grabbed or pulled or somebody laid a kiss on me and I wasn’t expecting it at all.'

'That kinda thing happens for right or wrong,' he told Hot Press.

Porter has apologised for his behaviour, and has resigned from his radio show on Today FM.

'While my conduct, which had been in keeping with my flamboyant and outrageous public persona may be regarded as offensive and unacceptable by many people, I at no time intended to upset anyone.'

'I sincerely apologise to anyone I may have genuinely offended.'

Porter has since been dropped from this year's pantomime, Polly and The Beanstalk.

Twitter user are furious with Ben Affleck after the actor appeared to joke about the recent sexual harassment allegations during an interview with MTV.

The Justice League star, who was accused by Hilarie Burton of sexual harassment in 2003, upset some viewers over comments he made during an all-cast interview promoting the new DC film.

When quizzed about which superhero they would like to see cast in a sequel, Ben was quick to suggest the inclusion of Black Canary, because “it would be good if we could use more women.”

But he didn't stop there.

Answering the same question, co-star Ray Fisher, who plays Cyborg in the film, chose the hero Zatanna as his preferred addition – to which Ben replied “the fish nets, right?”

The interviewer then proceeded to ask the cast what they'd get up to if another female superhero where to join the squad.

“I think it would create a different dynamic,” explained Ray, who was then interrupted by Ben's amused response.

“You following the news at all?” the star laughed.

Needless to day, his comments did not go down too well with viewers, many of whom took to Twitter to accuse the actor of making light of the situation.

Drake proved himself to be a real-life hero last night after he halted his show to confront a man who was allegedly groping females in the audience.

The Canadian rapper was performing an after-show set at Sydney's Marquee nightclub when the incident occurred.

Visibly frustrated by the situation, the 34-year-old signalled for the music to stop before leaning into the crowd.

"If you don't stop touching girls, I will come out there and f*ck you up," he said.

"If you don't stop putting your hands on girls, I'm gonna come out there and f*ck your ass up."

His threats were met with huge cheers from the crowd, and while it's not clear what happened to the man after this point, we're assuming security escorted him out of the building.

Luckily for us, one member of the audience caught the entire thing on video so we can all enjoy this moment of justice.

Uploading the footage to Instagram, user louisesukari wrote: “I got this close to Drake threatening to jump into the crowd to start a fight with a guy groping a woman in the audience. Violence against women, 6 God says no.”

Hundreds of people took to the streets of Hollywood this weekend to show support for the victims of sexual misconduct.

Inspired by the hugely successful #MeToo Twitter campaign, men and women marched along Hollywood Boulevard and the Walk of Fame, in a effort to combat a “culture of sexual abuse” in the entertainment industry.

The demonstration follows a number of allegations made against prominent figures in Hollywood including Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and most recently, comedian Louis C.K.

According to Sky News, Tara McNamarra, a 21-year-old protester at the march said: “I've been sexually assaulted multiple times throughout my life.”

"It's affected me in every aspect of my life."

#MeToo is the brainchild of social activist, Tarana Burke, who created the hashtag in the wake of the Weinstein allegations.

It was later popularised on social media by actress, Alyssa Milano, who shared the message with her Twitter followers.

Ahead of Sunday march, Tarana wrote on Facebook: “For every Harvey Weinstein, there's a hundred more men in the neighbourhood who are doing the exact same thing.”

“What we're seeing, at least for now, is a unity of survivors, a community of survivors that have grown out of this #MeToo viral moment, that I'm just hoping and praying that we can sustain.”

Organisers say they hope the march will help to unite survivors of sexual assault and encourage more victim to tp talk about their experiences.

Rebel WIlson has taken to Twitter to detail two incidents of sexual harassment that she endured while working in the film industry.

In a series of graphic tweets, she said:

'A male star, in a position of power asked me to go into a room with him and then asked me repeatedly to stick my finger up his ass.'

'All whilst his male 'friends' tried to film the incident on their iPhones and laughed. I repeatedly said no and eventually got out of the room.'

'I called my agent immediately and my lawyer made a complaint with the studio – basically to protect myself that in the event something similar ever occurred I'd be able to walk out of the job and not obliged to return.'

She detailed how she was then asked to 'support' the man: 'Later I was threatened by one of the star's representatives to be nice and support the male star.'

'I refused. The whole thing was disgusting. I've told hundreds of people in the industry the story in more graphic detail basically to warn them off this individual.'

She went on to describe a close call she encountered with a director at the beginning of her career.

'Earlier in my career, I also had a 'hotel room' encounter with a top director. I thought we were there to talk comedy,' she wrote.

'Nothing physical happened because the guy's wife called and started abusing him over the phone for sleeping with actresses and luckily she was yelling so loud that I could hear her and I bolted out of there immediately.'

'I was so naive the thought of anything happening apart from 'work talk' didn't even cross my mind.'

Rebel added that she does not believe that her experiences are as horrific as some faced by other women.

'I know, moving forward, that if I witness this behaviour, whether it happens to me or someone I know, I will no longer be polite.'

Recent controversy sparked by allegations of sexual abuse and harassment against producer Harvey Weinstein and actor Kevin Spacey has prompted woman and men across the entertainment industry to share their stories.

Speaking about her own experience of inappropriate behaviour, Irish TV presenter, Laura Whitmore, has revealed how she was called a “cold fish” for refusing to sleep with someone in the business.

Tweeting in response to a resurfaced news article in which actress Maureen O'Hara accused a Hollywood producer of calling her a “cold potato without sex appeal” because she refused to have have sex with him, the 32-year-old admitted she had been subjected to similar treatment.

“This was an article in 1945. It’s 2017 and the situation is similar. I was referred to as a ‘cold fish’ because I refused someone’s advances,” she wrote.

Adding in a later tweet: “Let's support and be kind to each other. We are all facing struggles that no one else may know.”

The MTV presenter had previously reported feeling “incredibly uncomfortable” in the presence of Harvey Weinstein, whom she met on a number of occasions to discuss her acting career.

And while Laura did not name any names, her revelation adds to the growing conversation around sexual harassment in the entrainment industry and beyond.

As more and more men and women come forward to share their experiences of sexual abuse and harassment in Hollywood, a resurfaced news article from the 1940s shows that this not a new issue.

An image of the 1945 article, first published in The Mirror, began circulating online after it was shared on Twitter by British concert pianist, James Rhodes.

It reports how Irish-born actress, Maureen O'Hara, accused a Hollywood producer of calling her a “cold potato without sex appeal” because she refused to have have sex with him.

“I'm so upset,” she told The Mirror.

“I am ready to quit Hollywood. It's got so bad I hate to come to work in the morning.”

She went on to explain how producers and directors had made attempts to damage her reputation because she turned them down.

“I'm a helpless victim of a Hollywood whispering campaign. Because I don't let the producer and director kiss me every morning or let them paw me they have spread around town that I am not a woman, that I am a cold piece of marble statuary.”

In 2004, she told The Daily Telegraph how standing up for herself harmed her career.

“I wouldn't throw myself on the casting couch, and I know that cost me parts. I wasn't going to play the whore. That wasn't me.”

Maureen died on October 24, 2015, at the age of 95. She is best known for her roles in The Quiet Man, Miracle on 34th Street and The Parent Trap.

On Monday, Broadway actor, Anthony Rapp, claimed Kevin Spacey tried to seduce him when he was just 14-years-old.

Since then, the House of Cards actor has issued an apology, come out as gay, and has been dropped by Netflix.

In the week that followed Rapp's allegations, a number of other men came forward claiming Spacey had acted inappropriately toward them, the latest of whom is Richard Dreyfuss' son, Harry.

Richard is an American actor/ writer, best known for his roles in Jaws, Stand By Me and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

In a piece written for Buzzfeed News, Harry Dreyfuss explained what happened the night the alleged incident took place.

“When I was an 18-year-old senior in high school, Kevin Spacey groped me,” he revealed.

“It happened one night when the three of us were alone in Kevin’s apartment rehearsing my father’s lines. My father didn’t see, and I didn’t tell him about the incident for many years. Instead, I spent the next nine years telling people the story at parties for laughs.”

He describes how he did not want to alert his father because Spacey was his boss at the time.

Harry went on to explain how, as he began to share his story with more and more people, he realised just how common these types of incidents were.

“Often, they would respond by saying, “I know a guy that that happened to as well.” The victims in many of these stories were often young men.”

“All of these responses made me realize there wasn’t anything funny about my story. It wasn’t a joke,” he added.

The 27-year-old admits that although he had his reservations about coming forward, the recent string of allegations against Harvey Weinstein, and indeed the other victims who have spoken out against Kevin Spacey, inspired him to do so.

“I came to see how important it is to add my voice to the people who are demanding a better world. A world in which powerful men are no longer allowed to feel safe to do this, or far worse.”

Last night, Richard tweet in support of his son saying: "I love my son @harrydreyfuss more than I could explain with all the words in the world. And I am so incredibly proud of him right now."

British comedian Jo Brand has received huge praise after she was forced to explain the seriousness of sexual harassment to an all-male panel on the hit BBC show Have I Got News For You.

This week's show featured team captains, Ian Hislop and Paul Merton, with guest panellists comedian Miles Jupp and columnist Quentin Letts.

While discussing a headline reporting that an MP had taken his personal trainer to the cinema, Ian said:  "Some of this is not high level crime is it, compared to say Putin or Trump?"

As host of the show, Jo felt it was her duty to explain why the panellists should be taking sexual harassment seriously.

“Can I just say as the only representative of the female gender here today, I know it's not high level, but it doesn't have to be high level for women to feel under siege in somewhere like the House of Commons,” she said.

Adding how being constantly harassed "even in a small way … builds up and wears you down."

The 60-year-old received huge cheers from the audience and viewers took to Twitter to shower her with praise.

US actor, Alec Baldwin has admitted to bullying women throughout his career in the entertainment industry.

The 59-year-old made the confession during his speech at the Paley Centre for Media in New York on Thursday night where he was being honoured for his successful acting career.

Commenting on controversy surrounding the recent allegations of sexual harassment and rape in Hollywood, Alec insisted that men need to change how they treat their female colleagues.

“I certainly have treated women in a very sexist way,” the Emmy Award-winner said.

“I've bullied women. I've overlooked women. I've underestimated women.”

He continued: “From time to time, I’ve done what a lot of men do, which is…when you don’t treat women the same way you treat men.”

Earlier this week, the 30 Rock star told reporters that he was unaware of the any allegations made against director James Toback, who has worked with on numerous occasions – a topic he seemed to touch in this in his speech.

“I knew of certain things, that there were rumours of things happening to people,” he said.

Adding: “But, I didn’t necessarily know the scope, when you hear the hundreds and hundreds of women who are complaining about this.”

“It’s been a very eye-opening experience for me personally. We’ve got to be vigilant in a new way to make sure that everybody is comfortable and that we get the job done together that we’re there to do.”

Meanwhile, Alec Baldwin and his wife Hilaria have just announced that they are expecting their fourth child together.

The couple made the announcement with a sweet Instagram post captioned:  “Our Baldwinitos are getting a new teammate this spring.”

An Egyptian lawyer has come under fire after he suggested that women who wear revealing clothing, such as ripped jeans, deserve to be raped.

Nabih al-Wahsh, a prominent conservative, said it is a “patriotic duty” to sexually harass a girl who shows parts of her body in public.

According to Al Arabiya, he said: “Are you happy when you see a girl walking down the street with half of her behind showing?”

“I say that when a girl walks about like that, it is a patriotic duty to sexually harass her and a national duty to rape her.”

Adding: “Girls must respect themselves so others respect them.”

The shocking comments were made during a live television debate in which panel members were discussing a draft law fighting prostitution and debauchery.

Understandably, Mr al-Wahsh's statement has sparked outrage across the globe and Egypt’s National Council for Women have announced plans to file a complaint against the TV channel.

“All the members of the council denounce and decry this statement that explicitly promotes rape and sexual harassment,” it said in a statement.

According to reports, Al-Wahsh previously described Egypt’s National Centre for Women as a "suspicious den" responsible for the "spread of divorces" and the "destruction of Egypt."

The comments come after an international poll named Cairo as the most dangerous megacity for women to live in.
