Valentine's Day is fast approaching, and by now the single population have gone in one of two directions.

1. A longing for romance. Bridget Jones style self-pity. Freezer full of ice-cream.

2. Blatant cynicism. Can't believe people waste their money on this silliness. Would rather hang out with their friends anyway.

Truth be told, we've been guilty of both. It just depends on our moods really – and how many glasses of wine we've had.

Anyway, it's time to shut the pity party down once and for all because science says you're better off single.

A study conducted by social scientists Natalie Sarkisian and Naomi Gerstel found that single people were more likely to reach out to their social networks.

As well as that, they also tended to give and receive more help and advice than their married counterparts.

Factors like race, gender and income levels had little impact on the results, meaning that the findings remained consistent across most demographics.

"Being single increases the social connections of both women and men," Sarkisian and Gerstel wrote.

And of course, we all know the importance of strong friendships when it comes to overall wellbeing.

In short – stay single, stay happy.

Happy to be single? You're not alone.

A new survey has shown that more women are happy and content with being independent individuals than men.

Retail analysts Mintel found that two thirds of single women are more than happy being without an other half.

The same could not be said for men.

Just under half of men surveyed said they were happy being alone, according to The Irish Sun.

If you're looking for love on Tinder, look away now.

Their study also found that that 70% of singles are not actively search for a bae, and haven't been focusing on their love lives at all in the last year, according to The Daily Mail.

So careers, friends and family seem to come before love for those in the survey.

However, around 40% of adults worry about being forever alone (us too hun) and this figure rises in young adults.

Are you consistently getting ghosted on dating apps? Tired of always being left 'on read'? Completely jaded with swiping all day with nothing to show for it, and heading on disastrous dates every weekend?

Well, RTÉ Two are here to save the dating day, with their brand new show which targets young singles looking for love; Pulling With My Parents.

The show intends to follow people from all over Ireland who are stuck in a merry-go-round of bad dates and dating apps, and who are willing to go to drastic lengths to crack Cupid.

How drastic, you ask? Parental interference…that's how drastic.

Basically, you'd hand over the romance reins to Mum and Dad and see what happens. Sounds dangerous to us, but infinitely entertaining to watch. Sorry, not sorry.

Parents will roll up their sleeves and give their kids' dating profiles an old-fashioned overhaul, replacing those spicy selfies with something more regal in order to find them a suitable lover.

We're sure these parents will be needing a major crash course in emoji culture, and slang for social media. However, Mum and Dad will be trying some more traditional solutions to get their kids a son or daughter-in-law.

Be it a personal ad in the Farmer's Journal, good old arranged marriage or plucking a date from the local GAA club, these parents will go the extra mile to find their kids love.

The series will no doubt be exploring the deepest corners of the generation gap, but we're expecting to be cringing the entire time watching it.

Think First Dates paired with Sun, Sea and Suspicious Parents, and that's the show you're looking at. We have to say, it sounds absolutely gas.

Does your Mum really know what's best for you? Does your Dad know how to find the man for the job? Why not apply for a chance to be on the show and track the love of your life.

They're all absolutely gorgeous, of course, but which sister is Meek Mill lusting after? The man doesn't hold back in his Instagram comments, we gotta say. The man is THIRSTY.

The rapper shows his love for reality star Kourtney Kardashian's body after the sister embarked on a big night out with fellow The Keeping Up With The Kardashians gals Khloe, Kendall and Kylie.

We're assuming the night was to cheer poor Khloe up after her split from boyfriend Tristan Thompson last week following cheating allegations with Kylie's 21-year-old BFF Jordyn Woods.

Right before the family hit the town in some insanely figure-hugging, stunning outfits, the gang posed for the obligatory sexy photos before posting them on Instagram.

Unsurprisingly, they caught the eye of rapper Meek Mill as he scrolled through his feed. He certainly liked what he saw when it came to 39-year-old Kourtney's body.

In one image, 34-year-old Khloe is wearing a semi-sheer shimmering bodysuit and grabs Kourtney's bum cheek, and the comments were FLYIN'. The TV star was only wearing a black bra and thong under her bodysuit, which was more sheer than Khloe's.

Now, Meek Mill is clearly an eloquent man who breathes poetry rather than absurd statements. Note the sarcasm. The rapper swooped in to comment; "Ass phat in the second pic" on Kourtney's post, and we don't know what to think.

Does the 31-year-old What's Free rapper, who formerly dated Nicki Minaj for years, stand a chance with the Kardashian beauty?

She ended her relationship with 25-year-old model Younes Bendjima six months ago, so she's available but the gal has high standards. Meek is certainly mesmerised, that's for certain. So are we; the gal is absolutely beautiful so the lads must be queueing up.

Jess Glynne's Brit Awards performance has been hailed as "inspirational" after she removed her makeup during the song, backed by a legion of women.

She performed her hit single Thursday surrounded by fellow ladies removing their cosmetics in front of the audience, and we got CHILLZ (They're multiplyin').

Glynne looked stunning in a white strapless dress for the rendition, and emoved her false eyelashes and wipes off her eyeshadow during the lyrics; "I won’t wear makeup on Thursday, 'cause who I am is enough”.

The star was joined by a group of fellow women who also donned white for the occasion, and simultaneously removed their makeup using hand towels in front of vanity mirrors.

Halfway through the tune, the British singer was joined by two-time Grammy winner H.E.R, and the standout moment became all the more powerful.

A video of countless women removing makeup played behind them, showing the need to fight back against society's strict and unrealistic beauty standards for women.

Twitter has gone absolutely wild with praise for the pair, with one person even tweeting; “That was one of the most empowering performances I’ve ever seen." YAS.

The moment came just after The 1975 frontman and absolute feminist legend Matt Healy accepted band’s award for “Best British Group” and spoke out about misogyny in the entertainment industry.

The relevance; we heart.

Healy quoted an article written about singer Ryan Adams by friend and music journalist Laura Snapes, who writes for The Guardian and Pitchfork.

“Male misogynist acts are examined for nuance and defended as traits of ‘difficult’ artists, while women and those who call them out are treated as hysterics who don’t understand art.”

Bravo Jess, and Bravo Matt. We love you both, keep slamming the ridiculous standards of the music business.

It's happened to many of us…we're travelling to the most Instagram-able spots in the world, yet there's nobody to take photos of us in all our cultured glory.

Whether it's Niagara Falls, the Colosseum of Rome or the white sand beaches in Bali, sometimes a great candid is all we crave. Why waste the opportunity?

If your own significant other can barely hold a camera, or if you're a single solo traveller, finding somebody to capture us at our finest moment can be tedious at best.

Deciding what to do on Valentine's Day can be a major chore, especially for single ladies out there.

It can be a frustrating time of forging through millions of Facebook events, restaurant promotions specifically for two and condescending Whatsapp messages of pity from friends in relationships.

Why not break a world record while trying to find love? Something for the CV as well as a future cuddle buddy would be IDEAL, and the event raises money for two great causes as well.

An official Guinness World Record attempt will take place at the Custom House Quarter on Valentines Day 2019, and it looks absolutely unreal.

If you're single and ready to mingle, or just want to go along for the laugh (or have a competitive streak that can only be tamed by breaking records…) make sure to head to the CHQ speed dating event.

They need more than 655 attendees to beat the current record, and one of them can be you.

Maybe you're looking for a future life partner to walk down the aisle towards (seriously) or perhaps you're just bored this Valentine's Day like millions of us, round up your single friends and join the queue for a night to remember.

Tickets are €15 per person and include a drink on arrival (very much needed), snacks and entertainment on the night. If you show your ticket to EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum within three months following the event, you get two-for-one entry. Second date alert?

Take home some hilarious stories, not to be told at family events, and maybe even some romance? Who knows what lies in store.

All proceeds from your tickets will be going to Movember Ireland and Breast Cancer Awareness too, so you'll feel extra wholesome after finding a match made in…well, not heaven but close enough.

Get your tickets on Eventbrite, and based on your answers when registering you will be split into categories based on orientation and age (over 18s lads) to match you with your perfect date.As perfect as basic algorithms can manage at least.

Dates per person last three minutes each, so you'll get the sparks of love or just a few snippets of nice conversation/small talk, either way it's a win-win.

Matching will be done on a little app, where you can keep track of everyone you meet throughout the night. Think socially acceptable cyber snooping, like Tinder with a tracker.

A link will be sent out to the app via email in January, and your profile can be created before the event.

The app basically acts as your wingwoman on the night; when you meet someone you can scan their QR codes and swipe right or left after the date based on if you're into them or would rather hide in a bin than ever see them once more.

If you both swipe right, you'll receive each other's contact details, and then LOVE WILL BLOSSOM. Hopefully. If you remember your phone charger.

What does it mean to be an ‘empowered woman’ in 2019?

The phrase ‘empowered woman’ is intrinsically loaded with underlying meaning and misunderstood perceptions. When many of us hear the phrase, most people envision a sexually-promiscuous woman who refuses to have children and most likely drinks scotch.

Arguably, its meaning has dramatically changed in the last year, ever since actress Alyssa Milano’s ‘Me Too’ tweet went viral.

2018 has not been the easiest of times for Irish women.

Watching the news everyday has been a tortuous experience, with violence against women splashed across every publication, the media raining debilitating double standards upon anyone remotely famous and the paparazzi splashing unflattering female body images across the internet.

Two massively painful rape trials have illuminated the imperative need for changes in the Irish law regarding sexual violence and assault, and the horrific way in which women are treated and cross-examined in the courtroom.

The Repeal movement was draining for everyone involved, the right to bodily autonomy is still undeniably under threat.

It’s worth noting that standards are changing all around us, lines are being drawn, boundaries are being set. Finally, I might add.

Women are always hyper-aware of the need for self-protection, especially when it comes to sex and dating.

We’ve all held our keys in between our knuckles as we walk down a dimly-lit road at night, we’ve all experienced unwanted attention on nights out, and we’ve all worried about what we wear, and the negative consequences our clothes could potentially bring.

Standards of relationships are changing in conjunction, as women entering the dating world have new questions which they are asking of potential lovers.

This also stands for workplace relationships, women are fighting back against pay inequality and sexism which are prevalent even in first-world countries such as Ireland and the UK.

Watching Little Mix and Ariana Grande fight back against Piers Morgan's recent sexist comments has been such a breath of fresh air.

The #MeToo and TimesUp movements have been eye-opening experiences for men, women and intersex people worldwide, with every facet of society examining its own behaviour with a new lens.

Unlike most men, women are expected to be looking for love around every corner.

During our teens and 20s, being single is depicted as a hugely empowering, freeing experience, yet a shadow dawns on the eve of our 30th birthdays: the misogynistic view that our biological clocks are ticking, and where on earth is our husband?

I have learnt many things from relationships, mainly that learning who you are can often only become a reality when you face tough aspects of life alone.

This is not true for everyone, of course, but many women in this day and age have to shrug off countless societal pressures and notions which are veiled in misogyny and shame.

Female empowerment in this article can only be relevant to my personal experiences, women are extremely complex beings and each feels empowered in totally different ways.

For women with disabilities, of different ages, gender binaries, classes and ethnicities, feeling good about ourselves comes in all shapes and forms.

Sex is power, #MeToo has taught me that. I cannot speak for other women, especially those in the LGBT+ community, but as a heterosexual woman, I have also learned many other hard lessons about the need to empower myself and have control over my body and mind.

Women are not therapists, we cannot be expected to handle the emotional baggage of other people.

We have enough of our own. Watching Ariana get blamed for Mac Miller's death is a primary example of the degradation placed on people for leaving toxic relationships.

Ariana Grande has entered ultimate female empowerment mode, sporting a friendship ring instead of her recent engagement rock, and regularly posting images of classic film stars and female icon moments on her Instagram account.

Her new music video will be a tribute to classic movies with female leads such as 13 Going On 30, Mean Girls, Bring It On and Legally Blonde.

Thank u, next; Ari’s latest phenomenally successful single, pays homage to her past loves before declaring that her relationship with herself is now a priority.

Reports claim that her ex-fiancé, Pete Davidson, did not support her sufficiently following the death of Mac Miller, her former love.

Ariana explained how toxic her relationship with Miller was; she endured the pain of watching someone they love struggle through addiction but realised that it was expected of her to ‘fix’ his pain, to mother him through his issues.

Her realisation that she could not carry out this burden was imperative.

When Davidson joked about swapping Grande’s birth control pills on Saturday Night Live, the reaction was mixed.

Many wondered why controversy erupted over the comment, yet many reflected on the notion of literally trapping a woman into staying with you through pregnancy, a huge emotional and physical ordeal for women.

Realise that we are not defined by our relationship status, and to have a relationship with yourself can be an incredibly growth experience.

Letting go of the pressure to always have an ‘other half’ can be freeing in itself. Don’t underestimate the value of your friendships, especially female ones.

SEX is empowering:

Learning what you like (this applies to anyone with a sexual partner- in a relationship or not) is CRUCIAL.

Women have always been expected to satisfy men in terms of sex, the language was never granted to us regarding how to communicate our desires, and how to find pleasure.

Consent in this country has always been a murky topic, hidden under the surface.

I never heard the word mentioned until I went to college, and by the time I learnt the word’s true meaning, I had already had unconsensual experiences without truly understanding them at all.

Educating ourselves about consent, and only having relationships with those who truly respect us and our bodies can be incredibly empowering.

Learn how to say no, be selfish.

Women cannot be expected to please everyone, all the time. Often we have to work incredibly hard, in our employment or relationships, to get the achievements we deserve.

Learning to put yourself first can be a massive way of respecting our own mental health and practicing self-love and acceptance.

Ask yourself, what do YOU want, instead of what does everyone else want of you.

Learning new skills

Self -defence classes, a new language, a skill such as website building, graphic design, even calligraphy. Why not?

If you have valuable assets such as the ability to drive, and even do nitpicky jobs such as online banking or tax can be empowering in terms of releasing yourself from co-dependence.

Don’t let opportunities pass you by.

Go with your instincts. Do what you’ve always wanted to do, but always found an excuse never to do it. You miss 100% of the chances you let pass by, and you never know how much you can gain from letting your fears dissipate and challenging yourself.

Mental health

The importance of having a health mind can never be underestimated. Take personal time whenever you know that you need it, don't succumb to pressure.

Body confidence

Society makes it so damn hard to allow you to feel secure in your own skin. In a world with such fascination with image and beauty, loving yourself is a completely rebellious act.

Beyonce Satisfying GIF

Everyone is unique, so don’t try to fit a beauty mould which will undoubtedly change in the next five to ten years.

In the 90s it was bone glamour with malnourished models such as Kate Moss on the runway looking like all they needed most was a McDonalds, and now the Kardashians have transformed cosmetic beauty into plastic surgery-induced curves, glossy brunette hair and big lips and bums.

Who knows what the next big trend will be, but why force yourself to look like someone else? You are worth so much more than what you weigh or what you see in the mirror.

Taking control of your love life

The laws of dating have transformed recently, with apps such as Bumble finally realising that women don’t always want to wait around for the right person to ask them on a date.

Try asking someone out, the worst that can happen is that they say no.

Food and health

I lived in San Francisco for four months and had the most atrocious diet, and when I came home I vowed to learn at least ten easy home-cook meals that are quick to make, and have health benefits. Having independence in terms of your body and health can be crucial to an empowering mindset, especially for women with chronic health problems.

Career

Finding career success can be a huge morale boost, especially for women. Success shouldn’t be based on how much you earn, but how much you love your job and how you contribute to bringing a positive energy to the world around you.

Fight to be heard at the table, realise how intelligent you are and how you should be valued in your workplace. Don’t let anyone invalidate you.

Another day, another body shaming slogan to get irked by.

Cropping up on Living Social is a tote bag with a message that's less than positive about the way we choose to take care of our physiques.

With over 20,000,000 results for the slogan to be found in a Google search, it's clearly a popular turn of phrase.

However, what does the context of the phrase really say about the way we view self care.

To be single or taken doesn't define us as people – and that's a positive message to instil.

But to then declare the third option as being 'at the gym' rather than caring about your love life, suggests that the only way to better yourself and the worthiest consumer of your time is to improve your body through exercise.

'Let everyone know you’re focusing on you with a statement slogan tote bag,' reads the product description.

'First you were single, next you were in a relationship, and now… you’re focusing on you.'

Ultimately, there are many ways to personally express self care, and I firmly do not believe that weight loss is one that needs to be promoted.

We cannot say we're impressed, as it perpetuates a societal expectation that to be worthy is to be slim.

Living Social

Yes, working out is therapeutic, and if you have the right intentions with your gym time, then amazing, but this tote is just another example of the assumption that thin equals healthy, and it uses body shaming to do this through the slogan.

That being said, if someone chooses to devote their time to the process of augmenting their bodies through responsible exercise control, then more power to them, but to highlight weight loss as a focal point of self improvement is not what we're about.

Thin, fat, muscular, curvy, all bodies are good bodies and this tote forgets that.

Getting into a successful relationship is something that most people truly long for.

However, not everyone is in a place in their lives right now where a relationship is something that's feasible for them.

Whether it's a high-demand job, a lack of interest, or just the fact that they haven't met the right person yet, not having a romantic relationship can sometimes be seen as a bit of a failure.

There are stereotypes enforced on single women, who are called crazy cat ladies and spinsters, doomed to reside in a state of perpetual singledom forever.

It can be especially tough when your family consistently reminds you that if you want to get married in your early thirties, you better get cracking on securing yourself a fine suitor with a sense of urgency.

There can be quite a bit of pressure to find the man or woman of your dreams, and this pressure definitely needs to chill for a second, because really, it's completely unnecessary.

While there are a million amazing reasons to get into a relationship, there are so many perks to being single.

We've picked out a few of our favourites:

10. You can get emotionally invested in TV relationships

Did anyone else cry when Hanna and Caleb split in Pretty Little Liars? Or when Susan and Mike were forced to call it quits in Desperate Housewives?

We can live vicariously through out TV peers without having the actual drama of a dysfunctional relationship. Win-win.

9. There is no one to mess up your Netflix preferences.

Speaking of TV dramas, our Netflix accounts are a perfectly honed medley of all of our favourite TV shows and documentaries, with the ideal suggestions in every second stream.

If we had to spend Netflix and chill nights with someone who doesn't share our exact TV tastes, we'd be very upset.

8. Your bed is your sanctuary, and yours alone.

Some of us are just emotionally attached to our leabas, and having it all to ourselves is a blessing.

Cuddles are top notch, but if we had to put up with someone kicking, stealing the blanket or even snoring in our beds every night we'd lose our s***.

7. More on the bed thing…

You can go to bed and wake up any time you want to, without worrying about accidentally waking someone up.

Or worse, being woken up by someone else, which would be completely unacceptable.

6. You invest time in building other meaningful relationships

Your best friends are your soul mates and you like it that way.

Sometimes, a romantic relationship can be all-consuming, and on rare occasions people can grow distant from their friends because of it, but when you're single then every night is girl's night.

5. And when those friends are also single?

Having a best friend who is also single is pretty epic, it's like having a partner in crime for navigating the dating world.

And the nights out are unbeatable!

Image result for the hills break up

4. You can avoid the drama of a relationship.

Life is full of enough drama without having to deal with jealousy arguments, splitting bills or in-laws.

Breaking up and making up is simply too messy for us to handle right now.

3. You get to eat all the food.

You know when the box says four servings, but your heart says one?

Well there is no one around to judge you for this, or worse, insist that you share that family-sized lasagne.

2. You get to be selfish, and that's okay.

Sometimes you just have to focus on your own feelings.

Couples choose to be permanently respectful and considerate of the other's feelings, but when you're alone, you can make the best decisions to suit you without having to consider or notify anyone else.

1. You realise that you can be happy on your own.

One of the most important things to realise in life is your own worth, and being single is one of the best ways to truly become comfortable in yourself.

Learning about who you really are can happen single or attached, but singlehood definitely gives you more time to reflect on yourself.
