Sometimes we have one rough night of sleep, and even worse, sometimes we go through a patch of little sleep for a few days – and we all know how mentally and physically draining that is.

It has been proven that women need more sleep than men and are more likely to to suffer from insomnia.

There are many tips and tricks around the Internet that promise you'll be asleep in ten minutes flat – but sometimes, the best remedies are the natural ones.

Tart cherries, for example, are one of the few foods that contain melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep cycles.

"Montmorency cherries contain the highest level of naturally occurring melatonin of any fruit, more than six times the amount found in similar Balaton cherries," says Michael Breus, author of Good Night: The Sleep Doctors 4-week Program to Better Sleep.

"We're discovering that tart cherries help people fall and stay asleep, without the side effects or medication interaction caused by other super foods like grapefruit," Michael told Woman's Day.

Unfortunately, tart cherries aren't the sweetest in the world, so Michael has come up with a smoothie to make it tasty (and effective):

Ingredients:

  • 60ml of tart cherry juice concentrate
  • 1 banana
  • 1 kiwi
  • 1 cup coconut or almond milk
  • 10 ice cubes

Method:

  1. Place all ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth. Finito!

Simple, huh? Bananas and kiwis are also known to be beneficial for sleep, and nut milk will help with any intolerances. Happy sleeping!

For anyone who loves (or wants to start loving) juicing, a bullet-style blender is the way to go.

All you do is chop, fill, blend and go – what could be simpler at 7am when you're still rubbing sleep from your eyes, debating whether you have time to wash your hair?

Sadly for our pockets though, the oft-championed NutriBullet doesn't exactly come cheap, starting at upwards of €85 depending on where you purchase it.

So we are downright shaking with excitement for the launch of Aldi's new smoothie and juice blender, which hits shelves next week.

The Nutrient Blender has a 700W motor (more than the standard NutriBullet's 600W), comes with a large 700ml cup, two smaller 350ml ones, two travel lids and a variety of blade attachments.

The best part? It retails at just €39.99. WIN.

Aldi's original smoothie maker/juicer, released back in October, also flew off the shelves – and while this one is slightly pricier, it's also heaps more powerful than the original 300W motored one.

Aldi confirmed today that the blender (available in gunmetal grey, champagne or red) will be available in stores from next Thursday February 18, which gives you just over a week to bribe someone to camp outside the store with a sleeping bag all night.

Okay, you don't quite need to go to those lengths, but we do recommend getting to your local Aldi early on as these are bound to sell out.

So maybe you already have that summer bod ready to go, or you're like the rest of us and left it until now to even start at all?

Not to worry as we have some detox drinks recipes that will help you shed a few extra pounds… and they taste delicious too which is always a bonus.

These are easy recipes to follow and won’t cost you a fortune to make – yay!

1. Detox water
When starting out, keep it simple. The best way to detox your body is by keeping it hydrated, and adding fruit or vegetables that contain antioxidants to your water will really help. Simply add some strawberries and mint to your water and allow it to diffuse. The mint helps with digestion and the strawberries contain anthocyanin, which stimulate the burning of stored fat.

2. Pineapple, pomegranate and lemon juice
Pomegranate contains more antioxidants than green tea which makes it a great detox food. The pineapple in this mix also gives you extra vitamins and sweetness.

3. Kale smoothie
Kale is the new spinach in the healthy eating world apparently and it’s for good reason. Kale is absolutely loaded with antioxidants and is great for anyone on a detox or just trying to stay healthy in general. All you need is a handful of kale, half an apple and coconut water. Kale is a bit difficult to eat by itself so smoothies are a handy way of getting loads in your diet.

4. The Immune Booster
This smoothie gives your body the detox it needs while boosting your immune system at the same time. It contains two apples, a handful of spinach leaves, one slice of cucumber, one slice of lime, half a celery stick, ¼ pineapple and ¼ avocado. Blend these ingredients together and you’re good to go!

5. The Vitamin C Kick
This drink is a must as it detoxes the body while fighting off illness as it is bursting with Vitamin C. All you need is two oranges, ½ a cantaloupe melon, 40g of strawberries and one tomato.

Avocados are one of the most versatile fruits in the world and can be used in sweet and savoury dishes – though more commonly found in savoury.

Here are five simple ways you can use avocado!

1. In a smoothie
For a richer, creamier taste to your smoothie, add half an avocado! Not only will this add a dose of healthy fats to your smoothie but avocados are also known to contain a good amount of Vitamin C.

2. As a spread
If you’re looking for a healthy, plant-based alternative to butter, why not use avocado as a spread in your sandwiches, wraps or on toast?

3. As a pasta sauce
If you’re sick of tomato sauce on your pasta, avocado makes a great sauce base. Add an avocado to some chicken or veg stock and lemon juice along with some salt and pepper and then blend until smooth.

4. As a dessert
Once again, if you are trying to get a bit more plant power in your diet, avocados make the perfect base for a chocolatey pudding. Simply blend an avocado with some cocoa powder, vanilla extract, melted chocolate and maple syrup before placing in the fridge overnight. There you have it, the healthiest dessert in the world!

5. As a snack
For a fast and nutritious snack, simply half an avocado, add salt and pepper and eat! You could even try adding some chopped prawns or crab meat for a posh snack.
