social media

With social media dominating so much of our time, it’s hard to imagine life before filtering photos was part of our daily routine.

And while your Insta filter of choice may have seemed relatively insignificant before now, a new study has shown that your favourite form of camouflage may actually reveal some very important clues about your mental health.

During a study of 166 Instagram accounts and almost 44,000 photos, researchers from Harvard and the University of Vermont discovered a link between particular colours, filters and subjects in people’s social media accounts and depression.

Photos which featured more blue, dark and grey colours were found to predict depression in the individual who posted them.

People with depression were more likely to have fewer faces in their pics than those without – which could be linked to socialising less frequently – and they were also less likely to use filters.

Where filters were used, the black and white edit Inkwell was most commonly associated with depressive states.  Additionally, depressed individuals generally received fewer likes for their posts than those with more positive mental diagnoses.

According to the Evening Standard, those behind the study believe its results are significant enough to suggest that Instagram photos could actually be used in the future as a form of mental health screening.

So turns out all that time debating whether Hefe or Nashville is better could be of use after all.

Instagram is one of the world’s favourite social media outlets but between cropping, filtering and captioning images creating picture perfect posts can be pretty time consuming.

Because of the aesthetic nature of the app, a lot of crafting can go into constructing shareable content so we’re excited to learn that Instagram is now considering adding a ‘save draft’ option to its platform.

Currently, pressing the back button simply deletes whatever edits you’ve been developing which can be pretty annoying if you need to run when your post is almost but not quite finished.

But – according to Mashable – the much loved photo sharing app is now testing a feature which would allow users to save photos that have been worked on mid-edit so that they can be finished and posted at a later time.

While Instagram’s new Story feature has received a mixed reaction as people try to figure out if it will take down their beloved Snapchat, we think a save drafts option would be widely welcomed.

Earlier this month High School Musical heart-throb Zac Efron admitted he was left feeling down in the dumps after no one swiped right on his Tinder profile

And while that news is nothing short of concerning – like how on earth will we ever find love if a Hollywood star can't even get a swipe? – Zac's negative experience of the popular dating app is more common than you'd think.

According to a new study from the University of North Texas, Tinder could be lowering peoples' self-esteem and messing with their sense of body image all at the same time.

In one of the first psychological studies to focus primarily on the Tinder platform, researchers found that both male and female users reported less satisfaction with their bodies and looks when compared with non-users but, interestingly, only male Tinder users reported lower levels of self-esteem.

Jessica Strübel – who co-authored the study – said: "Tinder users reported having lower levels of satisfaction with their faces and bodies and having lower levels of self-worth than the men and women who did not use Tinder."

The Assistant Professor explained that Tinder usage was associated with "body dissatisfaction, body shame, body monitoring, internalization of societal expectations of beauty, comparing oneself physically to others and [a] reliance on media for information on appearance and attractiveness".

While Jessica did suggest that Tinder may make people feel like their social interactions are disposable and increase their awareness of perceived bodily flaws, the researchers did stress that the results could also be caused by people who already have self-esteem issues being drawn to the app to begin with.

Always remember no matter how many matches you get, you are flawless!

Apart from calling out Kimye and wishing BFF Selena Gomez happy birthday, Taylor Swift has stayed away from social media over the past number of weeks.

With all the controversy surrounding her, it's easy to see why she didn't post anything, but in the small hours of this morning, the songstress made her way back to Instagram.

Taking to Instagram Stories, Tay shared a video of her cat, Olivia.

Ms Swift doesn't actually appear in the small clip, but can be heard talking as Olivia figures out if she's a cat or a squirrel.

Hmmm, OK?

Tay's very quiet return comes after Justin Bieber said he's on Kimye's team yesterday.

Even though she's back, we can't see things calming down anytime soon for her.

While we all know scrolling through Facebook for hours on end isn’t exactly good for you, there is nothing like a good study to highlight just how bad for your health that very pastime can actually be.

A recent study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine has shown that social media is not only a massive waste of time and energy, it also makes you feel bad about your career, financial situation and free time.

According to Forbes, the results suggest that people who spend more than an hour a day on social media are more likely to be depressed than those who don’t.

The report states that “exposure to highly idealized representations of peers on social media elicits feelings of envy and the distorted belief that others lead happier, more successful lives” which is actually totally understandable when we spend so much time reading “#goals” under people’s perfectly filtered holiday pics.

Additionally, the lead author of the study explained that time spent online can have a negative impact on an individual’s sense of body image and can also increase the likelihood that they could develop an eating disorder.

Jaime Sidani said: “We’ve long known that exposure to traditional forms of media, such as fashion magazines, is associated with the development of disordered eating and body-image concerns.”

“Social media combines many of the visual aspects of traditional media with the opportunity for social media users to interact and propagate stereotypes that can lead to eating and body image concerns.”

If there was ever a study to promote digital detoxing, we think this is it.

These days Lindsay Lohan is almost as well known for her bizarre social media presence as she is for her acting achievements and if her latest online revelations are anything to go by, that’s not about to change anytime soon.

In the early hours of this morning, the Mean Girls star used Twitter to make what appears to be a highly unusual form of pregnancy announcement.

While sharing a link to images from her 2009 rom-com Labour Pains, the actress wrote: “Lindsay Lohan labour pains trailer – I am pregnant!!”

Adding to the confusion, Lindsay then used Instagram to share a snap of she and her fiancé Egor Tarabasov together which was captioned: “I guess I was the same at 23…Sh*tty time – it changes at 26/27 @e2505t thanks for not coming home tonight.  Fame changes people.”

Two other recent shares on Lindsay’s account also suggest her 23-year-old partner has cheated on her but further that suggestion by referencing that a Russian prostitute may have been involved.

The first post shows Egor with a group in a nightclub and is captioned: “Wow thanks #fiance with Russian hooker.”

And the second – which was posted shortly after – is of a video of Egor speaking to a man in a club and is accompanied by the statement: “Home?  First time in my life – bare with me/he cheated on me with hooker #meangirls #meanboysu.”

Earlier this month the couple jetted off to the picturesque Greek island Mykonos to celebrate Lindsay’s 30th birthday but while there it was reported that they had an argument which ended with Lindsay throwing Egor’s phone into the sea and Egor pouring a drink over her head.

We hope things get better for Lindsay soon.

Vicky Pattison might be well known for her ballsy on-screen persona, but the Queen of the Jungle revealed today that, just like everyone else, she can be her own worst critic.

According to Celebs Now, the former Geordie Shore cast member burst into tears as she shared with the Loose Women panel her battles with self-scutiny.

As part of this afternoon's show, Vicky had to listen back to a pre-recorded clip of herself as she voiced some of the negative thoughts she has about herself and, understandably, the experience was an emotional one for the reality star.

Vicky was reduced to tears as she heard herself saying: “What are you doing here?  You’re not as good as everyone else.”

The tape also revealed how the Newcastle native compares herself to other women and tells herself she’s doomed to fail.

She said: “Look at them – everyone’s so clever and glamorous.”

“They’re thinking, ‘Who are you, what are you doing here?’”

“Just make it easier and go now.  You’re gonna fail and everyone’s gonna laugh.”

Vicky went on to explain that she experiences such negative thoughts every day and admitted she tries hard to act like people’s comments don’t affect her but in reality they do.

She also confessed that her insecurities are only made worse by the comments she receives on social media.

She said: “People tear strips off the way you look, which is never nice. I get everything – people say I don’t deserve to be where I am because of my past.”

Since the show aired, Vicky has received a stream of online support with women admitting they love and admire her and encouraging her not to give in to the negativity which at times surrounds her.

The Geordie thanked her fans by tweeting: "So overwhelmed by all your amazing support and messages after my appearance on this afternoon's @loosewomen.. It was a tough one for me!"

If asking him to move in with her wasn't evidence enough, Kylie Jenner has just made her relationship with Tyga social media-official.

In Kylie's most recent Snapchat story, the pair seem to be definitely back on as she shared a photo of them being all cute in the photobooth at Khloe's birthday.

The three snaps are certainly causing a stir between her fans since he had some harsh words for her while they were broken up.

And if moving in and sharing a house wasn't commitment enough, it also looks like the pair went car shopping together yesterday.

That being said, the Kardashian clan apparently don't think the relationship is going to last, but one thing's for sure – the relationship reunion snaps are pretty cute.

Social media stars are what it's all about lately.

Gone are the days of bowing down to the celebs – now, we have 'real' people to tell us how it is. Tell us what beauty trick to use, what clothes to wear and what weight-loss methods work best.

However, we know ourselves, that everything on the Internet is not always what it seems.

We envy the 'perfection' that some people carry, yet recently, more and more social influencers and bloggers are owning up to what's really going on behind the filter.

Fashion, beauty and lifestyle blogger Tiffany Brien regularly posts jaw-dropping snaps of holidays and her bangin' bod, but she recently came clean.

The self-confessed peanut butter lover shared a split picture of her body on her Facebook page; one side showing her toned, tanned tummy, and on the other side, her bloated and sore stomach.

"These two photos are 12 hours apart," she writes, after opening the FB status with, "reality check."

"We are not all what we seem on social media. I thought I would share a bad day with you to show you nobody is 'perfect' and it is ok to have an off day where your body just decides to not play ball."

She continues to say that the substantial change is down to a "delightful cocktail of lack of sleep, hormones and food intolerances. A mixture for a whole lotta bloat."

However, what she writes next is something I think we can all relate to – mainly because it makes us feel so down – "It seems to happen at incredibly inconvenient times."

YES. Whether it be date night, girls night, our best friend's wedding or on holiday, the bloat always manages to surface when we least expect.. and least want it.

"I suddenly feel uncomfortable and now really unattractive with a big bloated belly," she pens before writing what lessons have sprouted from it.

"I have learnt a lot over the last few years through my own research into my own problems once I noticed my body playing up when I did certain things and ate certain foods.

"It was really frustrating because I couldn't work out what was triggering it.

"This photo is a bad day, a day I cannot tell you exactly what I ate that made me blow up. I have gone over everything I ate and I was relatively clean so it could be something I think is 'healthy' that my body now thinks naaa no likely.

"Sometimes your body becomes intolerable to something you've always eaten, you just have to work it out."

The fashion, fitness, beauty and lifestyle bloggers we all look up to now are stepping away from the impeccable lifestyle – because it's not real. It's ideal on social media, but when you're running on little sleep, crazy-ass hormones and a whole lotta stress, that sought-after lifestyle just doesn't work out, and Tiffany is saying that it's OK to not be that way.

"I am in no way perfect. In fact I am miles away from being a role model when it comes to looking after myself fully in this sense.

"We all have our areas of weakness. I know what I am doing wrong and I know how to fix it but it is actually implementing it into your lifestyle that's the tough bit." Here, here!

"Yes it gets me down when this happens. No there's nothing I can immediately do about it. But I can aid it and eventually overcome it.

"It'll be ok, you're not alone. Promise."

Uh-oh… Things don't seem rosy at all for Demi Lovato at the moment.

Not only did she break up with her boyfriend of six years last week, but now she's announced that she's quitting Twitter and Instagram.

She took to social media last night to say she doesn't like the response she receives on some of her posts, and then later took to Twitter to share a message about why she's quitting Twitter and Instagram for good.

“But why do people actually give a f**k what I say?? like if you don’t care the gtfo haha (sic).

"That one time I started my own charity providing mental health care for people who can’t afford it and this is what y’all talk about,” she shared.

She then told her followers to follow her on Snapchat to keep them updated.

Kanye West, the king of Twitter rants, has agreed to join Instagram – but he has one strict condition for his fans, friends and family.

While going on another ramble on social media, the rapper said he was thinking about downloading the photo-sharing app but made it clear that no one can ask him to post anything or tell him what to do.

"No one can ask me or try to tell me what to Instagram… It's my art," he wrote.

"My tweets are a form of contemporary art only compromised by people trying to tell me what to tweet and not to tweet…

"Non artist trying to grab the paint brush…"

We bet his social media savvy wife won't be too happy about that, but sure they seem to be following in each other's footsteps lately so it'll be interesting to see what will happen.
