It's about that time of year again – evenings are getting shorter, nights are getting colder and as we retreat to our cosy central-heated homes for the winter – so to do our creepy-crawly friends.

In case you haven't noticed, over the past decade or so, Ireland has seen a huge rise in the amount of false widow spiders invading homes across the country (and if you're anything like us, you're not one bit happy about it).

This little guy made its first appearance on Irish shores in Co Wicklow back in 1998, and since then has been found in 16 counties, preferring urban rather then rural areas, and according to The Irish Times, is “proliferating at an alarming rate.”

Identified by its polygon-shaped body and dark reddish legs, the species has now started to attack humans, with three reported cases over the past few years.

However, not to be confused with the infamous black widow, a false widow bite can not kill a human – though symptoms can range from redness of the skin to facial flushing and sweating, as identified by scientists at NUI Galway.

Dr Michel Dugon, the head of the research team based at the Venom Systems and Protemoics in NUI Galway, likened the sting to that of a “big wasp,” and recommended that people who are bitten take painkillers and anti-inflammatories as prescribed by their doctor.

Hold on to your hats, ladies; you are about to read the most important piece of news this year…

Recently, two Mumbai-based scientists discovered a new species of spider, and it looks EXACTLY like the bloody Sorting Hat.

The spider has been named Eriovixia Gryffindori after one of the Hogwarts founders, Godric Gryffindor (naturally).

“When we first saw the spider, our collective thoughts were, ‘It looks just like the Sorting Hat, from the films!’ Being on the same wavelength, we decided to name the spider, after Godric Gryffindor,” one of the scientists said to BuzzFeed.

Even the amazing JK Rowling was chuffed with new discovery, and even sent out a tweet:

The spider even made its way to Queen J.K. Rowling, who seemed mighty pleased with the little buggo.

Well now, there you have it.

Groundbreaking stuff.

It's that time of year again, people.

Summer's over, college is starting back and… the giant spiders are here. If you've been keeping an eye on social media over the last week or so you've probably noticed an increase in the number of folks having complete meltdowns over massive spiders taking residence in their homes.

Like this one, for example… *runs for cover*

Finding a massive spider or three in your home is never going to be a pleasant experience, but experts say it's nothing to worry about.

Late August/early September is typically the time of year when creepy crawlies start looking for warmer places to live and lay eggs (i.e. your bedroom wall), and it's also when they go on the hunt for a mate.

All those little spiders we might have paid no attention to earlier in the year are now reaching full adult size, and they're on the lookout for a partner, pest control expert Trevor Hayden told Spin 1038 this week.

According to Trevor, there are two main types of spiders we can expect to find in Irish homes… wolf spiders and giant house spiders.

"Excluding legs, we regularly find wolf spiders with bodies around an inch long," Trevor explains.

Thankfully though, he promises they're generally harmless, even if you do get a nick or a bite. "The spiders we have here are not threatening." As for getting rid of our eight-legged friends, if you're not too squeamish, you can simply pick up the spider with some tissue or trap it in a glass and place it outside.

This way, you'll hopefully catch them before they really get comfy and start laying eggs (WHAT).

Whatever happens, by this time next month those spideys will be a distant memory. We hope…
