‘Extremely suicidal’: Jada Pinkett Smith talks mental health battles
Jada Pinkett Smith has gotten candid about her mental health battle.
The 47-year-old has opened up during the latest episode of her Facebook Watch show Red Table Talk.
The actor spoke about how in her early days of fame, she had struggled with suicidal thoughts, which she now sees as a nervous breakdown.
She said, “I had gotten to LA and gotten a certain amount of success and realized that that wasn't the answer. It wasn't what was going to make everything okay. [It] actually made this worse. I was extremely suicidal, I had a complete emotional collapse.”
Jada co-hosted alongside her mother Adrienne Banfield-Jones, and her 18-year-old daughter Willow Smith.
The episode that they're speaking on focuses on mental health and Jada didn't hold back when she discussed her own struggles.
She said, ''It’s like when you just don’t have control over emotions, your thoughts, you feel completely and utterly out of control. I don’t even think at that particular time I understood what I was going through.”
Following the deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain during the summer, Jada took to Instagram to highlight the importance of mental health.
She said, ''What I eat, what I watch on TV, what music I listen to, how I care for my body, my spiritual practice, what people I surround myself with, the amount of stress I allow and so on…either contribute to or deteriorate my mental health.''
She added, ''Mental health is a daily practice for me. It’s a practice of deep self-love.”
Hear, hear Jada – everyone should look after their mental health and talk to someone if they need to.
