Women are inspiring on and behind the camera. Here’s a list of TV shows that focus on the ‘F’ word – feminism.

These series contain talented, diligent women who are creating and defining the heroines we can’t wait to binge watch, all while creating the way for women of the future.

Sex and the City

Sex and the City was the first TV show to introduce the ‘career woman’.

It was released in 1998 and it showed professional women on screen looking for love as well as wanting a successful career on their own terms, without sacrificing their femininity. The powerful female drama aired on HBO which was originally a male-dominated channel.

Sex and the City was a risk, and it was the beginning of something fresh – before then, there were few female-led series in existence.

It secured a loyal audience of 7.5 million in the US proving that audiences wanted relatable female stories such as inequality in the workplace. The six season series shone a spotlight on single women, without making them look desperate or needy.

This was the first time we had really seen women take ownership of their sexuality on TV as it was a taboo topic. The series showed men that women do talk about the dirty deed, and don’t necessarily lie back and think of England.

Big Little Lies

Big Little Lies has spectacular scenery and great fashion but it also has horrendous scenes of domestic violence. It was intended to air for just a limited run, but HBO commissioned a second series – starring none other than the brilliant Meryl Streep.

It features powerful performances from its leading ladies Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley but it also tackles abusive relationships, sexual assault and motherhood in a refreshingly unique way.

Witherspoon and Kidman’s heartfelt Emmys speeches tells us there’s still a long way to go in getting female dramas up and running. Kidman opened up about why it was so important for her to be on the show “As an actress, we can read something and feel it, and in this case I could feel probably all of the women, which is a great thing…there was an enormous amount of protection and love for these characters from us as women.

'It was lovely being in their skin for a period of time, just because of the complexity of them and their truth.” This show strips these mothers back to their core to show us that they are nothing if not imperfect and complicated.

At first we see women rushing their children to school wearing high heels and driving fancy black cars. The closer we look we can see the cracks beginning to form: stories of human frailty, hidden insecurities, desire and distress.

It’s different. It takes the stories we are familiar with being told – adultery, betrayal, cattiness, dishonesty and deceit – and presents us with something new: real women, fighting real battles.

The Crown

The Crown is a story about the triumph of female strength in a world powered by men. It follows the political rivalries and romance of Queen Elizabeth II's reign and the events that shaped the second half of the 20th century.

In this series, we see a queen who not only takes her role seriously, but is also determined to be taken seriously. She is disappointed that her parents did not think it fit to provide her with a more robust education because of her gender.

Conscious that her lack of education is a weakness, Elizabeth enlists a tutor so she can feel more confident when talking to politicians and public figures.

In the show's first episode we witness the then-Princess Elizabeth promising to "obey" her husband during her wedding vows; an inclusion Churchill says she insisted upon. She clashed with her husband Philip in the early years of his reign as he struggles with feelings of emasculation due to the power held by his wife. Once she becomes Queen, the promise to obey becomes increasingly difficult to keep.

The aim to keep her husband happy soon becomes impossible to achieve because of the demands of her role and the royal protocols she must adhere to. The Crown co-stars, Claire Foy and Matt Smith, were not paid equally. Smith’s portrayal of a young Duke Of Edinburgh earned him more than Foy’s Golden Globe-winning performance as Queen Elizabeth in the Netflix show.

Producers later apologised and Foy was reportedly set to receive back pay.

Grey's Anatomy

Grey’s Anatomy deals with many topical issues, especially those relating to females. It focuses on different ages, races, sexual orientations, and economic backgrounds of both the doctors and patients. It shows that women can hold positions of leadership and it repeatedly raises the issue of how unequal the demands on women and men are.

Relationships between women are also treated as something normal and it deals with everyday discrimination that same-sex couples face. It also consistently addresses what it's like to be a mother, including all aspects of motherhood and there's also a place for disabled women in the series.

The 14 season series reinforces that brains are more important than good looks and it also reinforces that it can sometimes be empowering to use your own body for your own purposes. When Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) is called "Dr. Model" because she used photos of her body to help pay for medical school, she embraces it.

Viewers can see that empowering women who are consistently portrayed as "tough" also need help sometimes and it’s okay to ask for it, but that doesn't mean they have to lose their independence too. Women support women in this significant series and the best relationships are the friendships made between women.

Creator, head writer, and executive producer, Shonda Rhimes is one of the most powerful and successful forces in television today. She helped star Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) get incentivised as she was earning less than her male co-stars. The bold move was successful and it empowered Pompeo and other females to fight for equality.

The Bold Type

The Bold Type’s viewers are drawn to the empowering but messy stories the series explores, which includes learning to become comfortable with your sexuality and racial identity, and finding the courage to fight for the career you want, even if it means taking risks.

This fresh new TV series is about three women who navigate the modern world of journalism and publishing. The show deals with topics such as infertility and gun control. The women of The Bold Type fail in life, but this shows them receiving the room to explore this failure and understand that hardships aren't necessarily tragedies.

The optimistic and realistic thing about the show, is that we' see that it's okay to be imperfect. And they feel empowerment and security knowing their best friends will be by their side no matter what.

The Bold Type provides positive examples of women refusing to be held back by fear. It has genuinely good characters who happen to find themselves in interesting circumstances – there are no bad people or villains on this show.

The stories make us feel empowered and inspired, it's comforting and optimistic and it’s what people need right now.

We adored every character in The Crown, from Queen Elizabeth herself to the dashing Antony Armstrong Jones. We even had a soft spot for Tommy Lascelles.

However, there was always one character who stood out from the crowd, the one and only Princess Margaret.

Vanessa Kirby dazzled as the rebellious royal during the first two seasons of the show. We were completely captivated by her performance, but what really grabbed our attention was the troubled life of Margaret herself.

We were stunned by just how devastating Margaret’s love life was, especially at such a young age. Our hearts ached for her when she was torn apart from Group Captain Peter Townsend.

Margaret always felt outshone by her older sister, Queen Elizabeth, and longed to be in the spotlight.

The princess will now have her moment, thanks to the BBC. They are producing a two-part documentary series based on the ‘life and loves’ of the monarch’s troubled sister.

According to The Telegraph, Vanessa Kirby’s successful performance in The Crown inspired this documentary series.

The programme is set to feature interviews with various acquaintances of the late princess, including Basil Charles, who once owned a bar on the island of Mustique, where the princess often holidayed.

He comments: "She was a trailblazer, she was a little bit of a rebel. She wanted to have the [royal] life but she also wanted to have a normal life.”

The series will look at her forbidden love, her rebellious ways and her struggle with living in Queen Elizabeth’s shadow.

The gender pay gap is a topic that just isn't going away.

And when it comes to Claire Foy and Matt Smith's pay for their respective roles in the Netflix drama, The Crown, it seemed that all was finally well in terms of fairness.

Sadly, however, this doesn't seem to be the case.

It was first reported in late April that Claire Foy, who plays Queen Elizabeth II  in the TV series, was receiving less pay than her co-star Matt Smith, who plays her on-screen husband, Prince Philip.

Variety had said that the producers of the royal drama had actually confirmed that she earned less for the first two seasons of the show.

Matt's salary has never been disclosed, but Variety had revealed that Claire took home $40,000 an episode.

She told Entertainment Weekly at the time, "I’m surprised because I’m at the centre of it, and anything that I’m at the centre of like that is very, very odd, and feels very, very out of ordinary. But I’m not [surprised about the interest in the story] in the sense that it was a female-led drama. I’m not surprised that people saw [the story] and went, ‘Oh, that’s a bit odd.’

Producer Susan Mackie also said, "going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen."

With all of this attention on the pay gap within the show, it has now been brought to light that Claire actually isn't getting back-paid for her work.

"That was what was reported that I was back-paid. I've never mentioned anything about it and neither have the producers. The fact that that is 'fact' – is not quite correct,'' she told Al Arabiya

“Yes it’s Netflix, but it’s a British production company. It happened at the same time as it was coming out with a lot of other people that there was a lot of pay inequality across the board—in the music industry, in journalism, in every industry. It’s across the board that it became part of a bigger conversation, which is an odd place to find yourself in."

Fans of The Crown have been spoiled with tons of new information about the upcoming season. The show may not be returning to our screens until 2019, but that doesn’t mean we’re not excited about it.

We can’t wait to see what happens in season three, which is set to feature some explosive storylines.

The show has been unveiling the new cast over the past few months, and we just can’t get enough of these announcements.

Today, Netflix revealed that Josh O'Connor and Marion Bailey are joining the cast of the Netflix original series.

Josh O'Connor will play Prince Charles. Speaking of his role as the future king of England, Josh said: “Seasons 3 and 4 will follow some of the most turbulent events in the Prince of Wales’s life and our national story and I’m excited to be bringing to life the man in the midst of it all.”

He added: “I’m very aware it’s a formidably talented family to be joining, but reliably informed I have the ears for the part and will fit right in."

Marion Bailey will take on the role of the Queen Mother, she gushed about her new role: “Wonderful to be joining The Crown. It’s a brilliant show and we have a tough act to follow but what a gift to be playing the fascinating and greatly loved Queen Mother. Thrilled to be on board and working with such a top notch team."

Earlier this year, Olivia Colman was confirmed as Queen Elizabeth. She will star alongside Tobias Menzie, who is set to play a middle-aged Prince Philip.

Helena Bonham Carter will star as Princess Margaret and Ben Daniels will star as her husband Anthony-Armstrong Jones.

Call The Midwife’s Erin Doherty will play Princess Anne.

We cannot wait for The Crown to return next year.

We binge-watched both series one and two of The Crown, and although it seemed like a wonderful idea at the time, we certainly regret it now.

We miss Prince Phillip’s cheeky attitude. We wish we could watch Claire Foy’s dazzling portrayal of Queen Elizabeth every single day. We miss the drama of Princess Margaret and her troubled love life. We even miss Tommy Lascelles and that iconic moustache.

We are longing for series three of the Netflix drama series, and we’re sure we aren’t the only ones missing The Crown.

To fill The Crown shaped hole in your heart we’ve gathered up everything we know about the upcoming series.

When will it air?

Rumour has it that series three of The Crown will air later than the first two series. Apparently, filming will take place in July, with reports stating that the third series will air on Netflix in the winter of 2018, or early spring 2019.

The cast:

Unfortunately, we have bid a fond farewell to Matt Smith, Claire Foy, Vanessa Kirby and co. who played the Royals during the 1940s to the 1960s. However, some stellar stars will take over from the original cast with Olivia Colman taking on the role of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. The latest addition to the cast is Tobias Menzies who will be carrying on as Prince Philip after Matt Smith departs.

Vanessa Kirby who dazzled as the wild Princess Margaret revealed that Helena Bonham Carter will be playing a middle-aged Princess Margaret. Ben Daniels will star as the charming Anthony Armstrong Jones. Jason Watkins will play Prime Minister Harold Wilson.

The storyline:

It has been confirmed that the upcoming season will focus on Princess Margaret’s troubled love life, as it follows the breakdown of her marriage to Antony ‘Tony’ Armstrong-Jones'. We will also be introduced to Camilla Parker Bowles in series three.

The time frame:

It has been claimed that series three will be set during the 1970s. The Duke of Windsor passed away in 1972, so we have a feeling his death will be a major storyline if this is the series three-time frame.

We will keep you up to date on everything about series three of this glorious series. We cannot wait for The Crown to return!

Is it just us or are you dying to get a glimpse at Olivia Coleman for Season Three of The Crown?

Well, wait no longer as Netflix has released the first image of Olivia as HRH Queen Elizabeth II with the  simple caption of ''Patience.''

Which is something we sadly don't have when it comes to the third season of the hit drama.

Olivia is set to take over the reigns from Claire Foy, who embodied the grace and quiet determination of Her Majesty with such ease, that she will be greatly missed.

However, fans are divided with their opinions, as some are excited to see what Olivia will bring to the role while others wish Claire could have stayed on.

One said, ''Isn’t it two-fold? 1. The Queen needs to age: I don’t think we can hang around while Claire Foy gets 20 years older. 2. As mentioned multiple times throughout the series, ‘The Crown’ is the most important thing, not the person wearing it.''

Another chimed in with, ''I'm really going to miss Claire Foy (and Vanessa Kirby!) but I'm excited to see this next chapter!''

Olivia has spoken previously about how stepping into Claire's shoes will be ''a very hard act to follow.''

A post shared by The Crown (@thecrownnetflix) on

She spoke to Radio Times about the challenge of taking over from Claire.

''She’s f***ing amazing and it’s a very hard act to follow. The grown-ups put us [Olivia and Claire] in touch, so I could ask her about it and she was just lovely – she’s one of the sweetest people ever and she’s brilliant.”

Other new members to the cast include Tobias Menzies as the Duke of Edinburgh and Call The Midewife's Erin Doherty in the role of Princess Anne.

The third and fourth series are also reported to cover the time span of 1964-76.

Producer Suzanne Mackie also said that Charles’ second wife Camilla Parker-Bowles will be introduced.

Series Three can't come soon enough!

We unashamedly binge-watched the first two series of The Crown, like most of the country in fairness!

We were engrossed by Queen Elizabeth's power and vulnerability and, at times, appalled by Prince Phillip's behaviour, and were devastated when it came to an end.

And while the show's highly anticipated return is not going to hit for another while yet (2019, people), we have some news about the third series to keep us going until then.

This next season is expected to cover the years 1964 into the 1970s, and the show has already found its new Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman), Prince Philip (Tobias Menzies), Princess Margaret (Helena Bonham Carter), and Harold Wilson (Jason Watkins).

Billy Jenkins is rumoured to be playing Prince Charles (who will be ages 16 through to his 20s in the third series). And now, the actress playing another one of Elizabeth's children has been confirmed.

According to The Hollywood ReporterErin Doherty will be playing Princess Anne from ages 14 to her early 20s.

The actress has been in an episode of Call the Midwife and is appearing in the TV mini-series of Les Mis as Fabienne.

Erin trained at the Bristol Old Vic theatre company, and definitely bears some resemblance to young Princess Anne!

What do you think of the casting choice?

2019 couldn't be further away in our eyes, even though the year is nearly halfway up. The source of our agony? Having to wait for The Crown to return in next year!

Thankfully news about the upcoming third series has kept us placated. The most recent update is all about who's tipped to play Prince Charles from ages 16 to 22 (as it is expected that the upcoming season will cover the years 1964 to 1970).

The Prince of Wales was previously portrayed by child actor Billy Jenkins, so he is being aged up considerably in this next series as the actor rumoured to be taking over the role is nearly 28!

We have to say, though, the man who is possibly playing the Prince does have a very youthful appearance.

Josh O'Connor, known for his role in the ITV series The Durrells, may be stepping into Charles' well-polished shoes, The Daily Mail reports.

Josh certainly has the talent to hold his own in the excellent cast, as he won a British Independent Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in God's Own Country.

If cast, the British actor will appear alongside Helena Bonham Carter, who was recently confirmed as Princess Margaret, Olivia Colman as the Queen herself, Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, and Jason Watkins as Prime Minister Harold Wilson.

Helena said, after the confirmation of her casting, “I’m not sure which I’m more terrified about — doing justice to the real Princess Margaret or following in the shoes of Vanessa Kirby’s Princess Margaret."

“The only thing I can guarantee is that I’ll be shorter [than Vanessa].”

We are quite excited to see if Josh will also be confirmed!

Rumours have been incorrect before, such as the one about Hugh Laurie playing Prince Philip, so we aren't holding our breath.

We've been eagerly consuming every bit of news about The Crown we can find until it finally airs in 2019.

One tidbit that we had been especially excited about was the possibility of Helena Bonham Carter joining the star-studded cast.

It was reported back in January that she had been tapped for the role, but now Netflix has officially confirmed that the kooky actress is playing Princess Margaret. She is taking over from Vanessa Kirby, who played the wild Princess in the last two series.

We think Helena be brilliant, but the Sweeney Todd actress has expressed her worries about the role, Variety reports.

“I’m not sure which I’m more terrified about — doing justice to the real Princess Margaret or following in the shoes of Vanessa Kirby’s Princess Margaret,” she confessed.

“The only thing I can guarantee is that I’ll be shorter [than Vanessa].” We can always rely on her for some good old-fashioned self-deprecation!

Helena also set to appear in the highly anticipated heist film Ocean's 8. We're ecstatic that she's featuring in so many thrilling upcoming projects!

As far as the rest of The Crown cast goes, Jason Watkins was recently announced as a new addition, too. The BAFTA award-winning actor will be playing Harold Wilson, who was Prime Minister of the UK from 1964 to 1970 and also from 1974 to 1976.

You may recognise Jason from his roles as William Herrick in the TV series Being Human or Gordon Shakespeare in the Nativity film series.

"Harold Wilson is a significant and fascinating character in our history," the 51-year-old said, "So looking forward to bringing him to life, through a decade that transformed us culturally and politically. And excited to be working so closely with Olivia; and the whole team."

The pair is joining an amazing cast, including Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II and Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip.

So, now we just have to re-watch the first two series until 2019 rolls around!

Claire Foy won the hearts of many for her Golden Globe-winning role as Queen Elizabeth on The Crown, however, fans were hugely disappointed when reports that she was paid less than her co-star Matt Smith came to light last month.

It was revealed that Smith, who plays Prince Philip in the Netflix drama, earned a whopping £10,000 more per episode.

In light of the controversy, reports are now claiming that Claire, 33, is set to receive a lump sum of £200,000 (€226,880) from the production company.

Speaking about the pay gap, the actress recently admitted she was embarrassed by the whole thing, but insisted it was an eye-opening moment that would stick with her for the rest of her career.

"It definitely opened my eyes to a lot. And I certainly won't be naïve about those things," Foy sad.

"It's really opened my eyes about what I am allowed to have an opinion about, and what I'm allowed to stand up for myself about.

"And I think that's really changed my approach to myself and other women in this industry. It's been only a positive thing – even though, embarrassing."

Matt Smith also commented on the situation, saying how he supported his co-star "completely."

"I support her completely, and I'm pleased that it was resolved and they made amends for it, because that's what needs to happen," he said.

A new cast will take over Foy and Smith's roles in the next season of The Crown, with an air date yet to be revealed.

Netflix series The Crown was the centre of a huge pay-gap scandal earlier this year. It was revealed that star of the popular drama series Claire Foy was paid substantially less than her co-star Matt Smith.

The pair may have stolen viewers hearts with their emotional and jaw-dropping performances as Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth, but fans of the show were extremely disappointed to hear that the Doctor Who star was paid more than Claire Foy.

It is understood that Claire received £40,000 per episode for the first two series of the show, with Matt earning far more, although his exact earnings have not been disclosed.

The show’s producers admitted that the actor received more due to his previous work on the BBC series Doctor Who.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Matt stated, “Claire is one of my best friends, and I believe that we should be paid equally and fairly and there should be equality for all.”

He admitted that he was relieved to hear that the matter had been sorted out, “I support her completely, and I'm pleased that it was resolved and they made amends for it because that’s what needed to happen.”

He believes that we need to work harder to make all workplaces more equal, “Going forward, I think we should all bear in mind that we need to strive to make this better and a more even playing field for everyone involved — but not just in our industry, in all industries."

Suzanne Mackie, who is the executive producer of The Crown, stated that from now on, “No one gets paid more than the Queen.”

The next series of The Crown is rumoured to air early next year, however, Netflix has not released an official air date yet. There will be a brand new cast with Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies taking over as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

We've been waiting with bated breath to see who will be joining the new cast for series three of The Crown as Prince Philip.

After all, who has the acting chops to hold their own against Helena Bonham Carter (Princess Margaret) and Olivia Colman (Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth)?

Despite rumours that Hugh Laurie would be taking on the role, it's now been revealed that Tobias Menzies will be carrying on as Prince Philip after Matt Smith departs.

If you're a fan of Outlander then you'll recognise the 44-year-old actor as the heroine Claire's husband, Frank Randall, and his evil ancestor, Jonathan 'Black Jack' Randall.

As well, he played Edmure Tully in Game of Thrones – and that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his numerous acting credits!

Tobias is signed on to play the Duke of Edinburgh for series three and four of The Crown, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

He's certainly talented enough to bring Prince Philip to life on screen.

The London-born actor was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance as the terrifying Black Jack in Outlander in 2016.
