things to do

by

If you're not interested in getting locked this Friday, you may feel like you have no options when it comes to fun things to do on Paddy's Day.

However, we've thought of quite a few options for the teetotallers who walk among us.

10. An online shopping spree

A post shared by ASOS (@asos) on

Black Friday and New Years are usually when the sales commence, but one online store is doing n offer for Saint Patrick's Day.

ASOS is offering customers 20 per cent off for the day that's in it, with the code PATS20.

9. The Secret Session, 1618 March, the RDS

A true celebration of everything Irish, this indoor festivity is set to be a good one.

Live Bands, DJ’s, rugby on the big screens, and Irish dancing lessons are all to be expected, as well as oversized Jenga, Connect-Four, and ring toss.

8. Netflix binge

A post shared by hoelyboobz (@hoelyboobz) on

Netflix is getting all patriotic, and hopes to everything that is Irish by promoting  great Irish films and flicks with Irish actors in them.

Brooklyn, The Young Offenders, Bloody Sunday and Sing Street are all available on Netflix, along with many more.

7. Dublin Bay Prawn Festival, 1719 March, Howth Village

The Dublin Bay Prawn Festival is the ultimate foodie experience offering delicious food and live cooking demos, street entertainment and demonstrations by local fishermen all in the heart of the idyllic village of Howth.

It's not just the food that's set to draw crowds, the Dublin Bay Prawn Festival is also famous for music & entertainment, walks, talks and seaside antics.

6. Outdoor Adventuring

A post shared by Áine Finn  (@aine_finnx) on

While most people will flock in to town for some frenzied festivities, a nice walk along the beach or a picnic in the park can be just as merry.

Grab the kids, the other half or the dog and set out on a bright and blustery Paddy's Day adventure.

Alternatively if you're a fan of organised fun, book in to an adventure centre for some canoeing or rock climbing.

5. The Spirit of Dublin Craft and Food Fair, March 18, Teeling Whiskey Distillery

A post shared by Currabinny (@currabinny) on

While this festival may be at a whiskey distillery, we're going to this one for the amazing food alone.

Exhibitors will include Dublin Doughnut Company, Dot Brew, Popsy Daisy Popcorn, The Cupcake Bloke, Currabinny, Bean and Goose, Hope Brewery, Improper Butter and Delish Melish, so wear your (green) eating pants.

4. Settle in with the Late Late Show St.Patrick's Day Edition

A post shared by Ryan Tubridy (@instatubridy) on

On a weird and wonderful edition of the Late Late Show, Saint Patrick's Day's show will see a host of celebs get their DNA tested.

Broadcaster Maura Derrane, soccer pundit Eamon Dunphy, comedian Jason Byrne and politician Michael Healy-Rae gamely agreed to have their DNA tested to determine their ancestry.

Football legend Paul McGrath will also join Ryan Tubridy in studio to assess the Republic of Ireland’s chances in the crucial upcoming World Cup Qualifier against Wales.

3. Bake some patriotic AF goods

From shamrock cookies to anything drenched in green food dye, if you don't want to leave the house this Friday, then baking is a fun and functional way to spend the day.

Plus, you will be considered a complete legend by you drunk housemates when they stumble home to find a series of delectable baked goods awaiting them.

2. Bernard Shaw Graffiti Jam, March 19, The Bernard Shaw

A post shared by Valeriya Bojinova (@vbojinova) on

Looking for something a bit edgier?

Check out Dublin’s underground sights and sounds at the Bernard Shaw, with the return of the Eatyard Food Market.

There will be a range of festivities to celebrate Irish street culture, along with the Shaw's usual flea market.

1. St Patricks Day Parade

A post shared by Dober Man (@david_k_hobby) on

While there may be many annoying drunk people around, attending your local Saint Patrick's Day parade is a right of passage for anyone in the country on the day.

So get there early, drag your mates along, and applaud and watch the floats as they go by.

'Super cute' and 'exhibition' aren't terms you'd normally put together – but when it comes to Dublin's new petography exhibit, they're perfectly matched.

On Tuesday night a host of Ireland's best known faces gathered together to look at some rather unique photos of their pets at the Petography: Secret Life of Pets Exhibition in Dublin's Temple Bar.

The display, which was created by the team from Universal Pictures Ireland to celebrate the release of The Secret Life of Pets, documents what the pets of Irish celebrities get up to when their owners aren't around.

Featuring the furry friends of international rugby player Gordon D’Arcy, TV presenters Glenda Gilson and Kathryn Thomas and models Roz Purcell, Rosanna Davison and Holly Carpenter, this launch was a cuteness overload.

The free display – which opened to the public yesterday and will run until June 28 – is being held at Filmbase in Temple Bar to help raise money for Ireland's largest animal welfare charity, the ISPCA.

In two weeks time when the event closes, the images – which were shot by celebrity photographer Lili Forberg – will be auctioned off to raise funds for the charity.

Free event – check.  Good cause – check.   Adorable animals – check.

The Secret Life of Pets will hit Irish cinema screens on June 24, and we are PUMPED!

It’s Friday night and the last thing you want to do is sit in front of the telly watching The Late Late Show. Again.  But you’re broke. So what’s a girl to do?

Well you don’t need to be flashing the cash to have a good time with your friends – here are a few things you can do that will guarantee a good night:

Have a movie night
Get everyone to bring a bag of something and order a pizza. Instead of heading to the DVD store to rent a movie, just get one off Netflix. Even if you don’t have it we’re pretty sure at least one of your friends does…

Have a natter
Invite the girls over for tea or a glass of wine and a natter. You don’t need to go out and spend a fortune on an expensive bottles of wine either – Lidl have very reasonably priced ones. A few crisps and you’re sorted for a night of girly gossip.

Board game night
When was the last time you sat down and played a board game with your family, never mind your friends? It might sound a little cheesy but we guarantee you will have a laugh – just make sure you keep the competitive streak in check.

Bake off
Be a little creative and have a bake off. It doesn’t have to be anything really complicated – biscuit cake is always a winner.

Just don’t drink
If your friends are heading out and you’re really sick of missing out on the fun just be the designated driver. And the best part? You wake up without a hangover!

Holidays are great but sometime we just want a little more than a week in the sun, drinking piña coladas by the pool.

If it’s adventure that you are after you need to do at least one of these things abroad before your sense of adventure disappears.

Volunteer
Teach English in a foreign country, save the turtles in Costa Rica or build houses in South Africa, whatever you do, volunteering abroad will give you a sense of achievement and fantastic memories that will stay with your forever.

Work abroad
Volunteering abroad can be pretty hard on the pocket, unless you are pretty amazing at fundraising, so why not work abroad? If you are just out of college you can get a one year work visa for the US or a J1 if you are still in college. If the States isn’t your cup of tea, go for a two year visa to Canada or head down under for a couple of years.

Learn a language
Remember the craic at Irish college? You even managed to come home with a cúpla focal. Europe is so accessible in terms of college and work and you have such a huge choice of location. Why not head to Spain and learn Spanish or Germany? Or, if you are looking for a real adventure, grab a flight to Poland.

Trek
A trek is a great way to be in the open for longer than it takes to get from one bar to the other. The Inca trail in Peru is a four day trek, or why not do the Camino de Santiago if Peru is out of budget? If you want to go further afield, why not put the Himalayas on your to-do list?

So what if all your friends are off having the time of their lives without you? Having a weekend to yourself is actually something to look forward to. A little down time never did anyone any harm, and there are PLENTY of things that need doing in the house….

Organise your bits and pieces
If you’ve got a busy lifestyle and aren’t meticulously tide 24 hours a day, chances are things have gotten a little bit messy. Now is the perfect time to file away your receipts, tidy your wardrobe, change your bed sheets, clean out your make up bag – all those things you always say you’re going to do but never seem to get the chance.

Catch up on your reading
Nothing beats curling up in a pair of clean pyjamas with a good book and a mug of tea. If you find you’re too tired after work to concentrate on a book, a weekend to yourself is the perfect opportunity to give your library card a work out.

Practice your cooking
It can be risky trying a new dish on a week night – you don’t have time for mistakes and probably just want something without too much fuss. At the weekend though you can try your hand at just about anything, and if it doesn’t work out? Well, that’s a lesson learned. Call the Chinese instead. Win, win.

Watch a film by yourself
Contrary to popular belief, watching a film by yourself does not make you a loser. If you don’t like crying in front of people but want to flush out those emotions, it’s the perfect time to watch Marley and Me, or if you’re not really a dog person, The Notebook should do the trick.

Get crafty
Remember that tea cosy you made in primary school? That was pretty good, right? Pick up those knitting needles, sewing kit or set of paints you have hidden at the back of the closet and let the creativity flow! Make personalized creations for home decor or customized gift for any occasion. And don’t forget to add printed labels for that final and unique touch.
