Camping is so much fun, seriously! If you have never done it, it should definitely be on your to do list. Yes, at times it can be cold and more than likely it will rain but there is something about sleeping out under the stars.

Checklist time:

Sleeping bag
Do not, we repeat do not, attempt to go camping without one. No matter how much you may hate sleeping in them a giant duvet won’t keep you warm.

Tent
Well, if you forget this, you should probably either head home now or brace yourself for the elements!

Lots of spare batteries
The last thing you want is for the batteries in your torch to die – it can get pretty dark out there.

Lighter
Unless you plan on making fire Bear Grylls style we suggest you bring a lighter.

First aid kit
No doubt there will be a few mishaps, so make sure you pop a first aid kit into your bag.

Insect repellent
You will need this – don’t attempt to think you won’t.

Camping stove and kettle
Because your craving for tea won’t disappear because you are roughing it.

Baby wipes
There won’t be a shower for miles so this may be your only way to clean yourself.

Deodorant
See above. You don’t want people to think of you as the smelly one, do you?

Dry shampoo
Even though you are in the wild it doesn’t mean you have to let your appearance go.

Heading to New York for the weekend? You can fit in a lot of the sights and still manage to have time for shopping!

Day 1
You are probably still slightly jet lagged, so take it easy today. To save money, hop on a boat to Staten Island which will pass by the Statute of Liberty. While you won’t actually get up close and personal with the big green lady, you will still experience the wow factor and get to have a sit down! Next, head to one of New York’s most iconic sights – Central Park. Grab a coffee and wander around taking it all in. 9/11 Memorial should be in your list next.

Day 2
Get up early and head to the Empire State Building. Even if you don’t like heights this is a must-see. Times Square should be next although you need to see this after dark as well so head back here after you have done some shopping. Yes, finally we mention shopping! Spend the day blowing your budget before catching a show on Broadway.

Day 3
It’s your last day so you better make it a good one. Head to the Rockefeller Centre and get in some more shopping. You don’t want to be hungover on your flight tomorrow, so skip the pub and instead opt for a baseball, football or basketball match.

You’ll probably need another holiday after this weekend though!

There is something about travelling alone that will really help you see the world in a different light. However, before you pack a bag for one it’s important you know the basic safety rules, how to meet other people just like you and the best places for going it alone.

Safety tips
When travelling alone, it is important you stick to basic safety rules: never go out at night alone, always know the way back to your hotel, never get drunk and make sure you stick to the dress code of the country you are visiting.

How to meet like minded people
Sometimes travelling alone can get lonely so try to meet up with like minded travellers who don’t mind you tagging along. Staying in hostels are a great way to make new friends and make sure you strike up a conversation with others on the plane or train journey.

Where to go
You can go anywhere you please! Going it alone means the destination, length of time travelling and what to do is up to you. However, if you are having trouble deciding, Europe, South East Asia or Australia could be good spots to head to -you are bound to bump into at least one Irish traveller.

Booking a hotel from the comfort of your couch definitely has it advantages; however, while it may be a lot easier, there are a few things you definitely need to do and others that you definitely need to avoid.

Shop around
Don’t just book from the hotel’s own site. Look around price comparison websites like Trivago instead. You will definitely get a better deal this way.

Read reviews
Make sure you won’t be left with any unpleasant surprises by reading reviews on the hotel before you book it. Be wary of fake reviews though – always go with your gut instinct.

Give the hotel a ring
If you really can’t find a good price, give the hotel a ring. You may be able to barter a better deal.

Watch out for hidden fees
Make sure you get the full cost of your booking before you confirm it. You don’t want to think you are getting a great deal only to find out it’s not really that great.

Location, location, location
If you opt for the cheaper hotel, make sure it is not so far away from attractions that what you save on accommodation you lose on travelling costs.

Travelling helps to broaden the mind, experience new cultures and meet new people. It’s not all serious and educational though – these places will give you a right good giggle every time you pass their town name…

Boring, Oregon
Apparently, Boring’s slogan is ‘The most exciting place to live.’ Eh, really?

Yolo County, California
Why not head to Yolo, sure You Only Live Once.

Dildo, Canada
Imagine the conversation with your boss, ‘So, where are you from?’ ‘Dildo’
*Cue awkward silence…*

Shades of Death Road Road, New Jersey
Apparently, a lot of accidents happen on this road – maybe we’ll do a detour around this road.

Emo, Co. Laois
Whoever said Laois wasn’t an emotional place to visit had obviously never been to this town.

Lake Disappointment, Australia
Oh dear! Maybe we’ll give this one a miss, it sounds like we’ll just be disappointed…

Sandy Balls, Hampshire
Yes, you did read that right.
