After the violence that marked the Charlottesville white nationalist rally to protest the removal of a confederate general statue, one might think that the POTUS would have words of condemnation for the protesters.

However, Donald Trump took to both Twitter and an official press conference to support the reasons for the rally, saying: 'This week, it is Robert E. Lee and this week, Stonewall Jackson.'

'Is it George Washington next week and is it Thomas Jefferson the week after? You have to ask yourself, where does it stop?'

Twitter users were less than impressed with the stance of the POTUS, and, like many things on the internet, have meme-ified the president's statements.

Digging up some of the most questionable statues in global history, Tweeters are clapping back.

Ladies, it's that time again.

We're halfway through August, 'Back to School' signs are going up in every store around the country, and thousands of Leaving Cert students are desperately trying to remember whether they used the right formula in question 3 of Maths Paper 2.

That's right; the results are out tomorrow, and Twitter is currently awash with posts from 6th Year students who would rather do anything else than tear open that envelope tomorrow morning.

Let's take a look…

1. Oh, Casey.

2. It'll always be the dream, Annie.

3. Our lips are sealed, Sammy.

4. Just about everyone, Grainne.

5. You said it, Breeanna.

6. Everyone when they open that envelope.

7. Yep, looks about right.

And while those awaiting results gnaw their knuckles to the bone, and question their very existence, older Twitter users are, thankfully, on hand to offer some sage advice.

Ah, the sweet, sweet sound of silence.

There are certain occasions in the life that call for the complete absence of noise, and the moment you plug your phone into your car's aux cord is most definitely one of them.

There is nothing more annoying than gearing yourself up you to listen to the song that's been stuck in your head all day only to be met with the blaring sounds of whatever is first in your music library.

Well, one Twitter user has finally found a solution to this pesky little issue, and it's absolutely genius.

Samir Mezrahi has released a ten-minute-long track consisting of nothing but pure uninterrupted silence, designed specifically for anyone who is fed up with listening to Calvin Harris' Acceptable in the 80's every time they get in the car.

What's more, the song is actually climbing its way up the US iTunes chart. Currently placing at no. 30, Silence (feat. Khalid) sits just one spot behind Ed Sheeran's Shape of You.

And it looks like Justin Bieber better watch out, because Samir is after that number one spot.

But really, how funny would it be if that actually happened?

Hundreds of far-right demonstrators descended onto the streets of the university town of Charlottesville, Virgina, this weekend to protest against a plan to remove a statue of Robert E. Lee, head of the Confederate army in the American Civil War.

The white nationalists marched through the town holding lit torches before violence broke out after the group clashed with counter-protestors.

One woman died and more than a dozen have been injured after a car ploughed into a crowd of people protesting the white supremacist rally.

As Virgina governor, Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency on Saturday, many celebrities and political figures took to Twitter to condemn the ongoing violence and criticise the president's silence on the issue.

So, at this stage we have all seen that picture of Rihanna looking sexy AF in her festival outfit, posing up a storm and working her angles.

Wearing a teal wig, diamond bra, and a plethora of feathers, Queen Ri has frankly never looked better.

After she broke the internet by slaying in that picture, and other image surfaced on the web, and haters took the opportunity to diss Riri for it.

A post shared by badgalriri (@badgalriri) on

The image shows Rihanna looking unposed and comfortable, adjusting her outfit.

The picture could be deemed by some to be unflattering, but this is Rihanna we're talking about, she always slays.

The snap was uploaded in a side-by-side with the image Rihanna shared to her own Instagram, with a tweet reading 'Rihanna played us.'

Okay, so we all know our best poses, and not everyone looks fab when caught off guard and poorly angled (the unexpected opening of the selfie cam anyone?), but Rihanna was being body shamed by this Twitter user, as he insinuated that Rihanna was attempting to trick people into thinking she was hot by uploading a flattering picture of herself.

Twitter was having absolutely none of his body shaming nonsense, and took to the response section in their droves to defend the singer.

Here are a few of our favourite responses:

There have been few artists as divisive as Taylor Swift in recent years.

While some members of the public have happily bowed at her brogued feet, others have simply refused to buy into the star's 'wholesome' image.

And yet it looks like Taylor's recent appearance in the dock of a US court this week has managed to unite both her fans and former naysayers.

Having opted to counter-sue DJ David Mueller, who was suing her for defamation after she claimed her touched her inappropriately at a meet-and-greet in 2013, Taylor faced a barrage of questions from the DJ's lawyer – all of which she fielded like an absolute champion.

Lauded for taking a stand on behalf of women everywhere, Twitter has wasted no time paying tribute to Taylor's composure, conduct and courage during the trial this week.

From counter-suing for just $1 (yep, we know) to insisting in no uncertain terms that Mueller's behaviour was in no way acceptable, Taylor has been given the credit she deserves on social media this morning for a testimony which has made headlines around the world today.

And we are so here for it.

There's nothing like the world wide web for making you realise you're not alone in your bizarre habits, questionable pastimes and peculiar notions.

A quick browse through any meme-orientated website will swiftly prove that when it comes to your unique quirks and idiosyncrasies, you're not so unique, after all.

And the latest Twitter trend to remind us of this is the #ConfessYourUnpopularOpinions hashtag which is currently doing the rounds online.

So, whether you've yet to watch a single episode of Game of Thrones or struggle to understand the world's obsession with Chris Pratt, this hashtag is for you.

We'll let Twitter take it from here…

1. How do you really feel?

2. Woah, now.

3. Right, so.

4. Interesting…

5. Fair enough.

6. Nope.

7. Shame on you.

8. We're saying nothing…

9. We'll fight you.

For those of you who don't know, former President of the United States, Barack Obama, is celebrating his 56th birthday today.

And if you could reply on anyone to offer up a perfect throwback, it's former First Lady, Michelle Obama.

Taking to Twitter to pay tribute to the man she shares her life with, Michelle uploaded two throwback shots of the Obama family celebrating the former president's 43rd birthday.

"Another year older, but the same phenomenal guy I married nearly 25 years ago," Michelle wrote. "Happy birthday, @BarackObama — we love you so much!"

The tweet, which was uploaded less than an hour ago, has amassed more than 79,000 likes so far, with members of the public keen to share in the celebrations.

"Literally all of the relationship goals," wrote one while another added: "Happy Birthday! We miss you both. Come back. We get it. The prank is over. This story is getting old!"

We're with them on that one.

Let's face it, when it comes to romantic gestures, it's all about that personal touch.

Sure, flowers and chocolates are nice, but an extra special gift requires a lot more planning and creativity – and that's exactly what this woman's boyfriend (AKA our new favourite person) did.

Berlinda took to Twitter over the weekend to share a photo of the gorgeous necklace she had received from her boyfriend, Angel.

But this wasn't just any necklace.

The 22-year-old had gifted Berlinda with a necklace made from the petals of the first bouquet of flowers he gave her.

Yep.

The viral tweet has since garnered over 80,000 likes, and as expected, people can not deal with this adorable gesture.

Speaking to the Press Association, Angel said: “I was looking to do something special to show my appreciation for her and the things she does. I came across a video of how they make the necklaces with the scorpions inside of them and I thought to make my own spin off and put something meaningful inside of the necklace.”

After creating the pendant, he then attached it to a silver Pandora chain before presenting it to Berlinda on their three month anniversary.

Although the couple have only been together for a short while, Angel said Berlinda “brought out a side” to him that he “never even knew existed”.

“I know how much she loves flowers so I thought it would be meaningful as she can now have a piece of the first bouquet of flowers with her wherever she goes.”

We're not crying, you are!

We were all simultaneously baffled, bemused and concerned after Anthony Scaramucci was liberated from his White House posting after 10 days.

The communications director was removed from his post in what must be record time, and spawned  both our curiosity and an extensive smattering of amazing How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days-inspired memes.

In honour of Mr Scaramucci, people are taking to Twitter to share their own tales of short term employment, an it's seriously satiating our snoopiness.

Sure, some couples have used the opportunity to express their love and appreciation for one another, but we're not interested in that are we?

Unsurprisingly, the singletons of Twitter did not disappoint and they're cries for help are every bit relatable as they are hilarious.
