In this day and age, we LOVE our social networks, but one of them trumps all others.

In a new study published in the journal Information, Communication & Society, has found that Snapchat makes people happier than any other social network.

Researchers from the University of Michigan enlisted 154 college students who used smartphones and texted them six times a day over a two-week period.

When the students received the text, they had to answer a survey about their latest social interactions – like who they were with, how supportive they were and how they felt at that moment.

The researchers found that when participants had Snapchat interactions, they felt more positive emotions than when they had Facebook interactions.

They also found that the students paid more attention to Snapchat messages.

The reason might be because people don't feel as insecure about how to present themselves on Snapchat, since the images disappear in a couple of seconds.

But in general, the participants found that Snapchat is similar to face-to-face interactions with a friend, since the messages come day-to-day and not recorded for anyone else to see.

You post up an ill-advised status on Facebook or Twitter. Or maybe that late-night Snapchat or Instagram share was not-so smart the morning after the night before.

So you delete it and move on – vowing to stay off social media platforms when you’re feeling similarly ‘tired and emotional’.

However, once something goes up online – can it ever truly be erased? Well, the answer is somewhat worrying.

“Whether or not something is deleted isn’t within the user’s control,” says Behnam Dayanim, a Washington, DC-based lawyer who specialises in privacy and cyber security.

Take a regular email. When you delete it from your inbox, it goes to a “deleted items” folder. Empty that folder and you permanently kill the message – or does it?

Not necessarily, adds Mr Dayanim in conversation with menshealth.com, because it could still stick around on your email provider’s servers for an indefinite amount of time.

You can’t really get around this either, since you give these companies explicit permission to hold on to your data when you agree to their vague privacy policies.

So what exactly do social media sites hold onto?

1) Facebook

The social network stores data for “as long as necessary to provide products and services to you and others”.

2) Gmail

After you delete an email, Gmail “may not immediately delete residual copies from our active servers”.

3) Twitter

Twitter doesn’t comment on what it does when you delete a Tweet, but says that “search engines and other third parties may still retain copies of your public information, like your user profile information and public Tweets, even after you have deleted the information from the Twitter Services or deactivated your account.”

4) Snapchat

When you view a snap, it’s automatically deleted from the company’s servers… in “most cases”. Snapchat “can’t guarantee that the messages will be deleted within a specific timeframe” and says your snap “may remain in backup for a limited period of time.”

5) Instagram

The photo app may retain information for “a commercially reasonable time for backup, archival, and/or audit purposes.”

If you’re more than a little freaked out by this, Cyberdust (free for iOS, Android, and Windows platforms) will ease some of your paranoia.

The app claims to permanently wipe every message you send within 100 seconds of recipients reading it – even from company servers.

Otherwise, these tales of online woe might serve as deterrents too:

1) In 2013, PR consultant Justine Sacco Tweeted a tasteless joke: ‘Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!’ By the time she got off her 11-hour flight, thousands of angry people had responded to the Tweet, and the hashtag #HasJustineLandedYet was trending worldwide.

Shortly after the gaffe, Sacco lost her job. She’s the subject of Jon Ronson’s recent book, So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed.

2) Earlier this year, Rory Cullinan, former chairman of the Royal Bank Of Scotland, was fired from his position after his daughter posted screenshots of their private Snapchat messages to her Instagram account. Cullinan sent snaps from his office, with captions like “Another friggin meeting.” Seems innocent enough, but weeks later, Cullinan was canned.

3) When a Buckingham Palace guard posted commented about Kate Middleton on his Facebook page, calling her a “posh bitch” and “stupid stuck-up cow,” he was relieved him of his duties guarding the Royal Wedding in 2011.

4) In 2014, James Franco messaged a 17-year-old on Instagram, asking if she was single and wanted to meet up. The girl asked for proof that it was Franco, which the actor provided, and then posted screenshots of the exchange on Imgur

Franco copped to the exchange, but landed a seedy reputation for chatting up teens.

5) Amy Pascal, one of Hollywood’s most powerful executives, recently stepped down from her role as head of Sony’s movie division after hackers released private emails between her and other producers late last year. In her messages, Pascal made racially insensitive comments about Barack Obama and insulted celebrities like Angelina Jolie.

So ultimately, it’s probably best to ask yourself a few key questions every time you’re about to send something out, namely: Will this get me fired? Will it keep me from landing a job in the future? Will it hurt someone?

If your status, photo, or text can’t pass the test, it probably isn’t worth posting.

Yesterday, the new iOS software update allowed iPhone owners and emoji enthusiasts to express their love of all things burrito, unicorn and cheese.

There was a lot of cheese loving happening. People were more excited about the cheese than the Bank Holiday weekend it seemed.

UNICORNS

Now, we feel like there could be an explanation behind this worldwide cheese addiction.

A study recently published in the US National Library of Medicine has examined why certain foods are more addictive than others.

Surprisingly (or perhaps not if you’re a cheese freak), cheese was found to have the same addictive properties as many drugs.

According to the LA Times: “certain foods are addictive because of the way they are processed. The more processed and fatty the food, the more it was associated with addictive eating behaviours.”

An ingredient in cheese called casein makes cheese particularly addictive because of the way this is broken down into an opiate called casomorphin during digestion. The property has led Dr. Neal Barnard, founder of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, to call cheese “dairy crack.”

This is not a joke by the way, your cheese addiction is now validated. Thank you science!

"[Casomorphins] really play with the dopamine receptors and trigger that addictive element," registered dietitian Cameron Wells told Mic

Pizza was the food which was crowned the most addictive, which is thought to be as a result of the cheese topping.

So, now that we know there’s an actually explanation behind our love of cheesy food, who wants to try the Pizza Diet?

Last night, the news arrived that RTÉ are revamping the Angelus.

Instead of the staring into space we have become so used to after fifty years, we are going to be introduced to a series of one minute broadcasts before the Six One news.

Some of the stars of the new Angelus include a baker, a sculptor, and a book binder and restorer from Athlone.

So, gone be with the days of someone in an Aran jumper watching a candle flicker in silence. Perhaps they might give this aspiring musician a second chance.

Spin 1038 asked their Fully Charged listeners to tweet their suggestions for what should feature in the new and improved Angelus. The suggestions were hilarious and #StickItInTheAngelus has been trending for most of the day.

These are just some of the best:

1. The most timely suggestion:

2. Lest we forget:

3. An Irish institution:

4. A great moment in history:

5. Or any of the many instances when Irish horses thought they were people:

6. The glory days of the quiff:

7. The unspoken favourite hobby:

RTÉ Genre Head of Religious Programmes, Roger Childs, said:

“We are delighted to announce the six newly-commissioned films and The People’s Angelus slot on Fridays and hope that the Angelus will continue to afford people of all faiths and none some quiet space in a hectic day-to-day world.”

Today is the day that Irish rugby fans the world over have been looking forward to, as the lads in green prepared to do take on Argentina in the Rugby World Cup quarter-final.

While candles are being lit up and down the country as the team face a very difficult challenege, one well-known department store took a photo sure to boost everyone's spirits.

While there have been thousands of tweets sent out in support of the team before the match, and even more priceless reactions during the game, this is possibly our favourite.

It looks the Irish rugby team will have a very special person on their side today as they take on Argentina in the quarter-final clash.

We are all feeling confident that the team won’t let us down, despite being hampered by some injuries. However, it doesn’t hurt to have a little bit of magic on our side either.

Harry Potter author JK Rowling took to Twitter to reveal that she will be rooting for the boys in green against Argentina.

After it was confirmed that Johnny Sexton would not be joining the squad, the news of the Harry Potter creator’s support brought a smile to many faces.

Unfortunately Johnny has not recovered from a groin injury he sustained in the match against France last week.

Ian Madigan will instead be taking his place on the team for today’s match.

Let’s face it, breaking up with someone is never easy.

When you don’t know how the other person is going to react at the news, it can so horribly awkward. What if they cry?

What if they get mad? What if their unrequited love for you makes them cause a scene reminiscent of Tom Cruise and Oprah’s couch?

In order to avoid these awkward moments, many people resort to technology. Which, in theory, seems kind of reasonable. In reality it’s very much not.

The #MyBreakUpTextSaid Twitter trend is the perfect (and admittedly hilarious) example of why it is not a good idea to break up with someone via text.

There are hundreds of thousands of memes in existence and you can’t deny that you’ve laughed at most of them.

However, now people are asking what happens to the people behind the viral photo?

We’ve seen the success kid make a resurgence, and all is well with him. For some people however, that is not the case.

One 20-year old student has spoken out after her photo went viral, for all the wrong reasons.

You have probably seen it, and if you a Twitter account then there’s no doubt you have come across it because it has been featured on the social media site more than 125,000 times.

Ashely VanPevenage, from Washington, is friends with a makeup artist and when she was dealing with an allergic reaction she asked for help covering her blemishes:

“I was having this allergic reaction to benzoyl,” she told BuzzFeed. “I knew I needed help to cover my acne.”

When her friend uploaded the before and after pictures on Instagram, it was quickly copied. Initially the memes were more focused on the amazing make up.

Quickly though, it took a turn for the nasty and Ashley’s picture became associated with the viral meme “women you need to take swimming on the first date.”

VIRAL

This week, after months of being harassed online and having her appearance slammed by hundreds of thousands of social media users, Ashley uploaded a video that explained her experience.

She said “some days I will read through the comments just to see how cruel people can be.”

“My advice for people who may have to deal with this in the future is it doesn’t matter what people say about you or what they think about you,” she said.

“Everyone is beautiful inside and out.”

Rae Sremmurd teamed up with Justin Bieber on one of their recent Sremm Life tour dates.

The Where Are U Now singer is in the middle of something of a career resurgence with the release of his latest single, his new hairdo and a very interesting VMA performance.

The American hip-hop duo, who are brothers, are best known for their singles No Flex Zone and No Type. They will be bringing their tour to Vicar Street, Dublin on 16 December.

The pair were about to launch into their song Unlock The Swag when the Biebs joined them on stage for a performance that was equal parts hilarious and questionable.

Firstly he made sure he got his hands on the Hennessy bottle being passed around on stage.

Then he really unlocked the swag, pouring drink on the stage.

Sharing some with the fans…

The 21-year old Canadian is supposedly on a path to separate himself from his past party-hard lifestyle. But it is quite clear that he still knows how to party.

He flew to New Zealand earlier this week for a very quick trip. While there he performed an intimate gig for 150 of his fans.

He then joined the hip-hip pair on stage in Auckland and shoed the crowd how to really unlock their swag.

Any chance he might do the same in Dublin in December? What a Christmas gift that would be..

Not too long ago model and actress Cara Delevingne took to social media and blasted the paparazzi in Milan.

The 23-year old was in the city with fellow model Kate Moss to present their campaign for Mango. While there, the star seemed to have a bit of trouble when some of the photographers were acting very rude.

She went on to say that she would refuse to let grown men treat her “like objects with no feelings and get away with it.” She also apologised to her followers for her rant but explained it was necessary- she feared otherwise "these situations would probably end in violence."

Now, it seems Mullingar-native Niall is less than impressed with how he’s being treated by the photographers too.

The 1D star let loose on Twitter this morning after paparazzi told their fans to move out of the way so they could get a photo.

Just last night Niall had tweeted in praise of their fans after their gig at the 02 Arena in London. The pop star certainly did not hold back as he gave the paps a warning.

Niall’s fans immediately took to Twitter to praise him for taking a stand.

They were very impressed.

One of our favourite people in the WORLD has joined Snapchat!

Ed Sheeran took to his Instagram account last night to share the news that he is now using the social media site.

He posted a picture of his Snapcode along with the caption, "Take a picture of this on snapchat and it lets you follow me. How exciting".

If the code isn't working for you, you can add Ed by his username: teddysdaytoday.

If his IG and Twitter accounts are anything to go by, we reckon he will be sharing some very cool pictures, full of funny quotes and backstage shenanigans.

The IG photo already has 95,000 likes, so we're guessing Ed's Snapchat has probably crashed by now but we're really looking forward to seeing what his first snap will be!

If it's anything like this one, we'll be quite happy.
