Valentine’s Day

If you have ever been single and young and akin to the odd night on the town, then you may have amassed quite a few random numbers in your phone.

Well one American girl has decided to put these digits to good use by texting some lucky Irish men who she had enjoyed a boozy night out with while partying in the capital.

We all know the story.

"For those of you who don’t know, I’ve spent the past few summers in Dublin, Ireland. During this time, I went out to countless bars and clubs and met interesting characters along the way," said Victoria in her blog post.

"We’ve all been there…it’s a tale as old as time: we go out, we have fun, we meet someone who is engaging, funny, flirty, and…totally drunk. We dance and maybe kiss at one point but we both know it’s not going anywhere, so we exchange numbers as a formality and leave with our respective friends, never to speak to that person again."

So instead of leaving these numbers sitting in her phone, she decided to text 17 men to wish them a happy Valentine's Day.

While she was convinced that the majority of them wouldn't remember her, of the four that texted back, the results were pretty amazing:

The first guy didn't know what was going on…

The second guy was a bit confused but got there in the end…

The third guy was indescribable…

And the fourth guy was just a legend…

So if you have ever wondered what a former fling would say if you texted them out of the blue, this experiment should be an indicator that you should just go for it.

Sure, the boys only love it.

You'd be forgiven for having some post-Valentine's exhaustion today, given how many proposals, pictures of bouquets and #blessed statuses you had to wade through on Facebook over the weekend.

But before you swear off social media entirely, we insist you have a look at this gorgeous video from Westmeath mum Melanie Ní Beolláin, which is quickly going viral.

Melanie's son Brody wanted to share a little Valentine's love yesterday, and had his mam drop him over to his girlfriend's house with some gifts in tow.

Brody dropping off presents to his Valentine… Going to be such a gentleman

Posted by Melanie Ní Beolláin on Sunday, 14 February 2016

According to his proud mum, little Brody was "so nervous" before knocking on the door, despite being with his equally adorable girlfriend for "two years."

Since yesterday, Melanie's video has had almost 3,000 views and counting. We can see why, too – we challenge you not to watch Brody lean in for a cheeky hug without shedding a few tears of joy at your desk.

Happy (belated) Valentine's y'all.

Today is the day of love and whether you're going out on date night, staying in and eating pizza (YES) or hanging out with the girls, you NEED to end the night with this boozy cherry hot chocolate.

Toast to your relationship or toast to being the most bangin' single gal around, either way this drink is the perfect nightcap.

Ingredients:

  • 2 measures of vodka per cup
  • splash of cherry juice
  • hot chocolate mix
  • whipped cream
  • cherries for decoration

Method:

1. Prepare your hot chocolate mix as usual.

2. When slightly cooled, add in vodka and cherry juice. Stir well.

3. Dollop with whipped cream and cherries, and serve.

Simple! And maybe you can use the whipped cream for something else later… (wink wink).

Stephanie Davis seems to already be well in with Jeremy's family.

The pair have been together non-stop since their stint on CBB, and now they are in Dublin.

Jeremy brought Steph to his hometown for V-Day where he introduced her to his family, and Steph seemed pretty overly chuffed about it.

She wrote on Twitter, "On way to Dublin with me new amazing perfect imperfect family. Buzzing!" and added a whole load of emojis.

There seems to be no stopping these two! And let's be honest, who would have guessed they'd stick together after the show.

We're still wondering what love really is, right?

It's a whole spectrum on things, yes, but the lads over at Jimmy Kimmell Live decided to grill some children on the street and ask them what they think love means.

Some give epic answers that we couldn't have even thought of ourselves and others… Well, let's say others are totally steering clear from all that mumbo jumbo.

Whether you're in love or out of it, these kids are sure to give you a lot of insight.

Valentine's is upon us again, and while we're all for loving and being loved, there's always something a little contrived about February 14.

Queues in every shop for last-minute bunches of flowers, restaurants packed to the brim with couples who'd much rather be chilling at home… and the teddy bears. So many teddy bears.

This year, we're opting for something a little more subtle with our Valentine's plans. After all, there are loads of ways to show you love someone and not all of them have to involve rose petals and cheap boxes of chocolate.

Here are a few ways to show your love – without the cheese…

1. Choose your card wisely
Go for a handmade option, or pick one of these no-bullsh*t cards by one of Ireland's many genius designers. You don't have to buy a card plastered with hearts just to make someone feel loved… promise.

2. Make your gift personal
Ditch the loveheart teddy and go for a little momento of your relationship instead – a photo collage, a framed receipt/ticket stub from your first date, or a copy of the film you both watched on your first awkward trip to the cinema.

3. Surprise them with their favourite meal at home
Deliveroo offers delivery from top Dublin restaurants – everywhere from Carluccio's, Brother Hubbard and Dillinger's to Leo Burdock's – direct to your door in an average of 32 minutes. What more could you want for a night in?

The Deliveroo team were out to #ShareTheLove in Dublin yesterday – so be sure to show yours this weekend.

4. Whip them up breakfast in bed
You don't need to go all gourmet – some eggs, toast, avocado, OJ and coffee make for a cheap and totally delicious brekkie. Plus, once it's made you can hop back into bed and get cosy too!

5. Plan a totally chilled out date day
Sometimes you just need to forget what you "should" be doing and go with your own flow. Binge-watch Netflix all day, go to a double feature in the cinema, head to the beach for a long walk followed by chipper chips… whatever it is, do something that'll leave you both relaxed and smiling from ear to ear.

6. Book a cheap trip to somewhere you've never been
Budget airlines are perfect for random mini breaks, but if you want to stay closer to home, simply head off on the train or bus to a county you've never visited before. Beats a package trip to Lanzarote any day.

7. Just say it
Sometimes just saying the words "I love you" is enough to give your other half the best feeling in the world.

We Irish have such a strong admiration for bacon that we are genuinely surprised we didn't come up with this idea ourselves.

It was in fact two Floridians who came up with the idea of bacon roses that well frankly, we would be delighted to receive this Valentine's Day.

"I made bacon roses as a birthday gift, and delivered it to a busy office last January," said creator Logan Rae.

"By February, employees and my co-workers were requesting them for Valentine's day. The sales became too much to handle, so Kimmie Hruda joined me and we created Bacon Boxes."

Bacon. Boxes. That is pure genius.

"We've received a lot of excitement in response to our products – it's a totally new product unavailable anywhere else, we couldn't be more proud," said Logan to the Mirror.

"We've been referred to as the Louis Vuitton of bacon and generally as the 'best in bacon', so often that it became our punchline."

Know anyone who would fancy these on Valentine's Day?

Valentine's madness is in full swing right now, meaning we can't do as much as buy groceries without being bombarded with displays of cards, flowers and all things red/pink.

Vom. The sappyness of V-Day is tough enough if you're part of a couple, let alone if you're single.

That's why we love these relationship (or lack of it)-themed cartoons by artist Ling Vistov. She just gets us.

There's the joy of an imaginary boyfriend…

Wondering if you should just pack it all in and become a cat lady…

Trying to reason with yourself…

Celebrating Valentine's with your lovers Ben and Jerry…

Planning and failing…

But realising that no matter how single you are, you're never as lonely as poor Leo.

Ah, you've finally nailed getting a date on Valentine's, and it's even better if you're MEGA into the person too. So, why ruin it with a curry or ribs, huh?

If you really want to impress on V-Day, dodge these foods (you'll thank us later):

1. Broccoli

Broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower should ALL be avoided. They will make you super gassy and don't forget those little florets and seeds that get stuck in your teeth. Ugh.

2. Spicy food

It's cool if you like a bit of spice, but what if your date doesn't? Don't make them sit through a dinner where they feel like their lips are on fire.

3. Ramen

You might think it shows that you're a super foodie, but it's impossible to eat these noodles and still look polite. Slurping is not a good look.

4. Ribs

Yes, we know there's nothing better than munching down on sweet baby ribs. But you don't want to look like a savage dog on your date. Plus it's waaay too messy.

5. Tacos

OK, question: how the hell are you even supposed to eat these things properly? They crack and drip and you will just end up getting salsa all over your new top. Not good.

Valentine's Day is fast bearing down on us, and with just a few days to go, we've been dropping hints like mad things.

While it's always the thought that counts on V-Day, we'd much rather all those hard-earned €€€ be spent on something we'll actually use and cherish than a 6ft white teddy bear holding a giant love heart.

With that in mind, here are just a few of the gifts we'd genuinely love to unwrap come February 14.

And just to be safe, we'll probably end  up self-gifting a few of these to ourselves anyways. #TreatYoSelf and all that.

1. Dolce & Gabbana L'Imperatrice #3
You can't go wrong with a fresh and classic scent, plus this gorge D&G perfume is currently available at a huge discount. Yaaaas.

3. 'Love Who You Are' Wall Print

€4.48, GrafikShop on Etsy Ireland

4. Alex And Ani Love Expandable Wire Ring

You either LOVE Valentine's Day or you hate it. And it's easy to see both points of view.

If you love spending time with bae and relish with all the sappy love songs, poems, teddy bears and cards, then good for you.

On the other hand, Durex surveyed couples all around Ireland and found that only 24 percent are actually looking forward to the day and 28 percent said that if they receive roses it'll be a serious turn-off. Ouch.

So, to cut the clichés of V-Day, here's some cards that tell it like it is – and these are all available to download via Durex's Honest Valentine's Day Cards app on Facebook.
