Valentine’s Day

Valentine's Day is a great excuse to get away from it all for a day or two, and the fact that it falls on a Saturday this year makes a weekend break all the more appealling!

Here are five budget-friendly destinations, both in Ireland and abroad, that would be perfect for a Valentine's break!

See you there!

Edinburgh
With direct flights from Cork (Aer Lingus, KLM) and from Dublin (Aer Lingus, KLM, Ryanair), you could be in Scotland's capital in just over an hour! With its cobbled, hilly streets, Edinburgh is a great city to explore hand in hand with your Valentine! Head up to Arthur's Seat for a gorgeous view of the entire city, where on May Day it's traditional for women to wash their faces in the dew to keep themselves beautiful. Relax after your walk with lunch (and a cocktail) at the Swedish-run bar-restaurant Hemma, just minutes from the famous hill.

Paris
Surely there's no better time to visit the city of love than on Valentine's Day! Skip the jam-packed Louvre and head to the Musée D'Orsay instead for a look at Monet's famous water lilies. Far more romantic! In the evening, crack open a bottle of wine on the banks of the Canal St Martin, where the city's young people gather for chats, picnics and music. Of course, if the whether is chilly you'll have no shortage of wine bars and cosy bistros to choose from! Fly into Charles de Gaulle airport with Aer Lingus, or choose Ryanair for Beauvais airport – further out but with a reliable bus service to the centre.

Amsterdam
Aer Lingus/KLM fly directly from Cork and Dublin to this stunning Dutch city. We can't imagine anything more romantic than exploring the city's bridges and canals by bike, before stopping for a cold beer to cool off! The cheeky Sexmuseum near the Central Station is a must, for the weekend that's in it!

Belfast
Hop on the train from Dublin and you'll be in Northern Ireland's capital before you know it. The Titanic Experience are running a special Valentine's Afternoon Tea in the opulent surroundings of the Titanic Suite, starting at £25 (€33.50) per person. Or if you two would rather just relax and enjoy each other's company, head to the Victorian St. George's Market for a stroll around the many flea-market style stalls.

Galway
Easily accessible by bus from all over Ireland, the magical city of Galway is sure to bring out your fun side this Valentine's weekend! Check out some of the city's legendary pubs like the Roisin Dubh, Tig Coilí or Naughtons, or head to Salthill for a blustery beach stroll! With everything from budget B&Bs to the swanky G Hotel on offer for accommodation, there's something to suit every budget here.

In the movies, Valentine's Day is always full of rose petals, swanky hotels and champagne on ice.

In real life, that's all just a bit too much effort, we reckon. If your plans this Valentine's night involve a cheeky takeaway, a bottle of wine and some Netflix bingeing, then you're in good company!

A new survey by online takeaway ordering service JUST EAT reveals that a whopping 66% of Irish couples are planning a cosy night in this February 14th, with 42% saying a Chinese takeaway is on the menu.

As any happy couple knows, Valentine's is all about getting some quality time with your loved one, and what better way to do that than snuggling up on the couch with some good food and a great movie?

Of course, not every couple likes a toned down Valentine's Day – the survey also found that smug couples and irritating Facebook statuses will be two of the most common things grinding our gears on the day.

If you know a couple that you think deserves a cosy night in on V-Day without any cost or hassle, JUST EAT are asking you to nominate them to win the ultimate night in! Each prize pack will include a Takeaway Twosie (who needs onesies?!), roses from Flowers.ie and a €50 JUST EAT gift card.

If your chosen couple wins, you'll also receive a €50 JUST EAT voucher to use yourself. To get started, simply follow JUST EAT on Twitter and Facebook, where details on how to enter will be revealed next week.

Us Irish folks are not exactly smooth movers, and this hilarious Valentine's Day prank shows just how tongue-tied we can get!

Retailer Lidl sent a stunning model onto the streets of Dublin to ask for advice about the "Valentine's gift" she had bought for her boyfriend. A gift that just happened to be of the suspenders-and-stockings variety….

True to form, the poor lads just couldn't cope with the awkwardness!

Hilarious.

When we think of romance, our minds no doubt wander to the classic city of love, Paris. While Irish couples still love a trip to the capital of romance, it’s not their number one choice…

In comparison to 2014, where only two Irish cities, Dublin and Galway, stood out in the top 5 favoured destinations alongside London, New York and Paris; Cork and Killarney have now crept in, knocking London and New York out of favour.

Have you been hurt by an awful ex recently? Have you been left reeling right before Valenetine’s Day? Well, we may have just the thing…

Although you didn’t think you’d be getting your jerk ex a gift this year, you are – you are going to name a cockroach after him! San Francisco Zoo are offering you the chance to ‘adopt’ a cockroach by donating money and getting cuddly toy in return, and a cockroach named after your ex.

According to the zoo, adopting the cockroach will mean that hopefully you’ll never have to encounter one in your live life ever again: "Your Adopt-an-Animal donation will be used to support these amazing insects and further the San Francisco Zoological Society’s mission to connect people to wildlife, inspire caring for nature, and advance conservation action. And with a little luck, this generous donation will release your bad love life karma so that you never have to encounter a cockroach again.”

We like their thinking…Have you got anybody who deserves a cockroach named after them?

It’s a common fact that the food we eat has a direct impact on how we feel. If you eat the right foods, you and your significant other will be more than ready to enjoy a romantic time between the sheets.

Celebrate at a French restaurant
When it comes to romance, you can’t go wrong when you chose anything French.  In a French restaurant, you can enjoy clean seafood such as oysters, which are a well-known aphrodisiac.

Cook at home
Pop on your aprons and cook up a spicy Indian curry. If you add plenty of ginger, it will help boost circulation and leave you both with a sexy glow.

Leave room for dessert
When it comes to dessert, you can always get a good endorphin rush from dark chocolate. It has that feel-good factor that is a perfect way to end a romantic meal.

Don’t forget to splurge on some red wine – nothing gets us in the mood like a refreshing glass of red.

It looks like Kim Kardashian’s Valentine’s Day gift of one thousand red roses has been upstaged … by Christina Aguilera’s new engagement ring!

Christina became engaged yesterday to her boyfriend of three years, Matt Rutler.

The singer uploaded a beautiful picture of a beach setting with her new ring the centre of attention, captioned: “He asked and I said….”

The stunning engagement ring appears to be vintage or vintage inspired and we must admit, we’re slightly in love with it!

Congratulations Christina!

Kim Kardashian received a very elaborate Valentine’s Day gift yesterday – a room filled with one thousand red roses.

Kanye West seemingly went all out for the romantic day with Kim who captioned the picture on her Instagram account: “A thousand roses.”

The couple certainly love the finer things in life and are reportedly getting custom made crowns for their Parisian wedding in May. Yes, real crowns.

Kim also attended Kanye’s Yeezus tour on Valentine’s night, uploading another photo to her Instagram account captioned: “My date with Yeezus tonight.”

Call us old romantics but isn’t there something slightly more special about one single red rose that one thousand?

Ellie Goulding received what we believe to be the best Valentine’s card so far.

The How Long Will I Love You singer posted the card on her Instagram account and captioned it: “Ha pea Valentines Day”

The Burn hitmaker has been rumoured to be dating McFly’s Dougie Poynter after she  was spotted sitting beside the singer at a Brooklyn Nets basketball game in London. The 27-year-old and the singer looked like they were having a great time when the kisscam was on them but they never actually kissed. She took to Twitter to say:  “Apparently big faux pas to not kiss on kisscam @NBA sorry!! Ha next time!”

The singer, who is well known for keeping her love life on the DL, was even rumoured to have been dating Ed Sheeran and our very own Niall Horan.

Hmm, wonder who signed this Valentine card?

Millie Mackintosh and her husband Professor Green are on a romantic break in Paris for Valentine’s Day and she wants everyone to know it!

Following speculation that their marriage was in trouble after only five months of marriage, Professor Green decided to straighten things out and lost his cool on his Twitter account.

Now it would seem Millie has found her own way to end speculation by uploading some intimate pictures to her Instagram account.

Millie uploaded a photo of Professor Green standing in their Parisian hotel room where you can visibly see her lingerie.

She captioned the sexy image with a series of hashtags that seem to say that she and her husband may be feeling worse for wear this morning: “#findthemenu #thishangoverrequirescarbsimmediately#pariswhydoyoudomeso #breakfastinbed#happyhallmarkholiday.”

The couple appear to be having a great romantic break, which is always nice to see, especially today!
