We have scientists to thank for an awful lot of things, but most recently they are responsible for abundance of adorable animal photos taking over social media.

It began with some bat-eared foxes and baby bears competing to be the world’s cutest baby animal. Things then escalated very quickly when a tiny sea turtle entered the competition, and also a squirrel glider.

Then everything got very out of hand but we really really don’t want it stop.

Competitors are not just limited to small animals either:

Even the non-fluffy types are vying for attention.

We honestly didn’t know baby fish were capable of being this adorable.

This might be one of the best trends yet.

Earlier this week a French tourist went viral after posting a video in her hunt for the Irish guy who got her pregnant… but it turns out it was all a very questionable marketing trick.

Natalie Amyot hit headlines around the world on Monday when she launched her hunt for the "really cute guy" she met in O'Malleys Bar in Mooloolaba in Australia six months ago.

"It was love at first sight… We had a beautiful night. The next morning I flew home to Paris and I lost my phone with his number on it," she said in a video posted to YouTube. "Six weeks later I find out I'm pregnant, so I've come back here to try and find him."

The video now has over 1.4m views online, while a Facebook page for "tips" has 5,000 likes. However the unrequited love story was yesterday revealed to be a hoax, thought up by tourism agency Holiday Mooloolaba.

"This has been a viral video for Holiday Mooloolaba," English digital marketer Andy Sellar says in the crinegy reveal video, after admitting that "Natalie" was in fact an actress.

"I run a company called Sunny Coast Social Media and we do viral videos for businesses… We just wanted to put Mooloolaba on the map, because it’s a wonderful place."

However the video hasn't had quite the desired effect on tourism, with many angry viewers saying they really didn't see the point of deceiving anyone:

Definitely a viral fail.

When Meath native Denise O'Reilly came upon a €20 note with a seriously romantic note scribbled on it, she had no idea who the owner was.

Denise posted a photo of the sweet love note on Facebook, hoping it would lead to some answers… and maybe a happy memory or two for the guy the message was meant for. Her post got over 16,000 shares and almost 3,000 likes, and eventually word reached the right ears,

Found this is my Purse this morning!!! Ah Christy She s you!!!!! Go get ur girl!!!!! Come on people and share!!!

Posted by Denise O'Reilly on Sunday, 23 August 2015

But in reality, the story's ending is not quite as happy as we'd hoped.

Irish musician Christy Leech got in touch with the Anton Savage Show on Today FM to explain the backstory to the €20 note, which was meant for him but sadly never made it into his hands.

Here's what he had to say:

"Megan was the name I used to call my ex girlfriend. We went out for a year and a half. The name arose from when I misheard her name and thought she was Megan for our first week of dating. Then it stuck.

I'm a musician and while we were going out, I wrote her a song called 'It’s always been you.'

We broke up, she met someone new. After I saw the 20euro note on a FB post, I called her. She told me she had written it on a note she used to pay into one of my gigs about 6 months ago. I didn't know she was there. She told me she thought I'd get the cash directly but I obviously didn't. She took it that I didn't want to talk.

So, now we're in touch again but the situation is quite different."

This sounds like a real life version of Noah and Allie in The Notebook… we seriously hope these two give things another go!

We'll probably never be as content with life as baby Ethan is in this video.

Mum Gina Gardner first posted this video back in 2004, but it's gone viral again this week and we HAD to share it with you. Gina came upon her three-year-old daughter Emily and 18-month-old son Ethan calmly painting themselves in peanut butter, and luckily for us she had her camera on hand to capture the moment.

While Ethan looks hilarious enough as it is, it's his reaction to being caught out that really had us laughing:

You can watch the full video here… prepare to fall in love with Ethan the Peanut Butter Monster.

At this stage of life most of us have learnt how to politely deal with unwanted gifts. For example: "Oh Aunty Mags, thank you SO much for my shower radio, it's exactly what I wanted!"

But back when we were kids, we weren't quite so subtle. As a toddler you pretty much take the liberty of saying exactly what comes into your head, with no care for well-meaning relatives.

Not this little boy, though. Dad Jeff Simmons gave his toddler son the ultimate test of manners when he presented him with a gift-wrapped avocado as a 'surprise' birthday present.

The reaction? Flawless. See it here:

Jeff says he and his wife had been speaking with their son earlier in the day about the importance of reacting politely even if you get a present you don't like, and they wanted to see if their advice had worked.

And to be fair, it looks like it definitely did. That's some stellar parenting right there.

This video has just brightened up our day as we think we may have come across the Internet's coolest dad.

One California dad has shared a video in which he shows the toy his son chose in the toy store and it is going viral.

In the video, Mikki Willis explains how his son was given two birthday presents which were exactly the same so they went to the return one and choose something else.

His son chose an Ariel from The Little Mermaid doll, and he couldn't be happier. “Now how do you think a dad feels when his son wants to get this?”

Mikki sends a strong message to other parents in the video, saying his sons can choose whatever life they want and that he promises to love and accept them no matter what.

“Choose your expression, choose what you’re into, choose your sexuality, choose whatever,” Willis said.

Meet your new spirit animal, Audrey.

She is six-years old and better at Zumba than many of us will probably ever be.

The dancing sensation suffers from a disease called Diamond Blackfan Anemia, a blood disorder. Her body does not produce red blood cells, DBA is a very rare disorder.

It means that she required blood transfusions every 3-5 weeks in order to survive. The other treatment option is a steroid which only roughly 40 per cent of patients actually receive the benefit.

Despite her illness, Audrey loves to dance, and her parents upload her videos from her Zumba classes to a Facebook page which aims to help raise awareness for the rare blood condition.

Scott and Julie, Audrey’s parents have explained that DBA is so rare that it is also severely under researched.

They are hoping that by helping Audrey spread the word about DBA in such a cheerful way, they can help to get more research in place dedicated to DBA treatments.

John Lewis are known for melting hearts all over the country with their annual Christmas ad, but it turns out they can make us feel all the feels at pretty much any time of year.

The company's new Premier Home Insurance ad launched this morning, and we have been watching it on repeat since.

Firstly, it features Elton John's Tiny Dancer, which already makes the whole thing a winner in our eyes. Secondly, it introduces us to possibly the most adorable little girl ever, giving it socks with some serious sitting room dancing.

Anyone who has EVER thrown on a cheesy 80s song and danced their heart out (twirls and all) when no-ones watching needs to see this ad. It will make your day, we promise.

If you've ever had a pet go missing, you'll know the awful feeling of anxiety it causes. For some of us, it's as bad as losing a family member.

So we're guessing whoever decided to plaster their town with these "Cat Found" posters has certainly never had to deal with such a situation. An Irish Reddit user spotted this seriously tactless sign pinned up in the town of Killincarrig, Co Wicklow, earlier this week, and had to share it with the world.

"MARMALADE CAT FOUND," it begins.

So far, so good. But wait, there's more…

"Sadly, the cat had been knocked down and killed by the time we found it," the poster continues. "We wanted to let the owners know."

We seriously hope the cat's owners heard the news from another source first. That's certainly not a sign you want to stumble upon without warning…

In case you haven’t noticed recently, bloggers are having a bit of a moment.

They are everywhere, from Instagram to Facebook we are practically inundated with fashion and beauty advice. While some of us love the chance to get some advice or a review of a new cult product, others are not such big fans.

This weekend one Dublin girl had decided that enough was enough

She wrote in a post:

“Hey you guys. I've spent the last 24 hours watching bloggers, vloggers and everything in between. I actually don't know how they take themselves so seriously.”

She decided to add her contribution to the world of beauty bloggers. The result was pretty hilarious.

Since she posted her video, it’s been viewed almost half a million times, and she’s uploaded a second one since.

Hey you guuuuuuys, we found our new favourite blogger.

The absolute irony of the video’s now viral status is that the amount of views and shares her post has are the kind that fashion bloggers spend their time fantasising about.

It took us a while to contain ourselves after the ‘King of the Man Bun’ was crowned as superhero doppelgänger Brock O’Hurn, but this latest take on the up-do trend it getting us all worked up again.

Floating around on social media for a while now, #DogBun is probably the cutest fashion statement to be made so in 2015.

People are making loose buns and top knots for their pooches and posting the results on social media.

The results are pretty spectacular, we rounded up just a few of our favourites, after much deliberation mind you.

Obviously no one wants to hurt their pooch in the name of fashion. Something to consider if you want to give the trend a try: your dogs ears shouldn't be tied up with a rubber band for any long periods of time, soft cloth or old school scrunchies should be fine though. Such as what this pup is modelling:

Accessories on point.

Be careful where you stop for your morning coffee as you could come face-to-face with an unwelcome furry friend.

International coffee shop chain Caffé Nero has promised an investigation after a horrific video was published of rats running around one of its Irish branches. The coffee shop in question, located in central Belfast, remains shut today with a sign saying it is "closed for essential maintenance."

The footage in question was filmed almost a month ago by a couple walking through Belfast city centre after a night out. In the short video, a number of rats can be seen climbing across one of the coffee machines before the camera pans out to show the store's name.

It is often said that in a busy city you could be anywhere from three to 30 metres away from a rat at all times, and going by this video that distance could be a LOT shorter.

Caffé Nero has its headquarters in England but has over 700 coffee houses worldwide in countries across Europe, the US and the UAE. As well as the Northern Irish branches, Caffé Nero also has four locations in Dublin.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, the 24-year-old man who spotted the pests said he was stunned and felt he had to capture what he saw. "I couldn't believe it in such a well-known brand. I was quite shocked and stunned. That's why I started recording it, because I didn't think anyone would believe it," he explained.

"It was out of the corner of my eye I noticed one rat on the floor and then eventually another one, and I watched them climb up the counter top and in behind the coffee machine. Then I started recording it."

In a response today, a representative for Caffé Nero said an urgent investigation was underway. "This incident has only just been brought to our attention," the spokeswoman said. "We are taking it extremely seriously and will be conducting a thorough investigation as a matter of urgency."
