weight loss

Nutritionists might encourage us to think of food only as fuel and to eat only when we need to, but the truth is that many of us have a very different relationship with food.

Whether you're a foodie who Instagrams every bite, or a serial dieter who categorises every piece of food as "good" or "bad," for most of us food is about so much more than sustaining our body – and not all of us have a good relationship with our eating habits.

If you suspect your attitude to food and eating could be affecting your weight, your health or other aspects of your life, it's important to recognise where the issues lie and to know how best to fix them.

Here are a few signs your relationship with food is not all good, and some simple fixes, too.

1. The sign: Your eating is tied to your emotions
Do you find you mindlessly polish off a chocolate bar without noticing when you're stressed at work? Or that all your good diet intentions go out the window when you arrive home wrecked in the evening? Many of us turn to food in times of boredom, tiredness, frustration, anxiety or stress, and end up using it as a crutch for other, larger issues.

How to change it:
Next time you find yourself reaching for something to eat when you know in your heart you're not hungry, ask yourself what else your body might be craving. If you're tired, anxious or stressed, try some deep breathing exercises, yoga, a short walk in the fresh air or a nap if possible. If all else fails, a cup of tea or even some hot water with lemon will give your hands something to do and should take your mind off thoughts of food.

2. The sign: You lie to yourself (or others) about your eating habits
You only opt for a green salad when you're out for lunch, but know you'll spend the evening working your way through everything remotely tasty in the cupboards if there's no one around to see. Once the wrappers are at the bottom of the bin, it's like it never happened, right?

How to change it:
If you feel you're overeating, it's time to face up to what you're consuming every day. Keep a food diary for at least three days, and you should be able to better identify when and why you binge or needlessly snack.

3. The sign: You beat yourself up about food "failures"
You're at home, craving a takeaway pizza. An hour later, you're still craving it, so you give in. The next day it's all you can think about and you feel guilty for letting yourself down. If this sounds like you, it's a sure sign you're in the "food is the enemy" camp.

How to change it:
If you find yourself giving into a craving, accept what is happening, savour the food, and move on. One pizza is not going to ruin things – and we bet it's downright tasty.

4. The sign: The number on the scales has a huge affect on your mood
When you're a few pounds up, you automatically feel depressed and worthless, but when it's a few pounds down everything is rosy again.

How to change it:
Water weight, the time of day you weight yourself, and what you've just eaten, all have a huge affect on your weight at any given time. Avoid the scales and focus on being a healthier, more energised you by exercising and eating well. Health is not a number.

Famous folk always seem to be dropping weight and toning up in the blink-of-an-eye. And while us mere mortals probably can't afford an army of personal trainers, dietitians, private chefs and detox retreats like they can, we can still learn a few valuable weight-loss lessons from their success stories.

Here, we round up five celebrities who are looking better than ever, and reveal the secrets, tips and tricks behind their image overhauls…

Khloe Kardashian
The reality TV star looks as gorgeous as ever since losing weight and water was an important factor. Khloe claims she drinks 5 litres a day and is encouraging her younger sisters to do the same. Khloe said: "I go to a trainer five times a week, and on the weekends, I do cardio or whatever I want to do."

She added: "I kind of eat what I want, but in portion control, which I never knew before."

Sam Smith
Sam managed to drop 14lbs in 14 days with the help of Amelia Freer's book Eat. Nourish. Glow.

Freer has said: “It’s very nice for me to see the results that I do get with my clients.

She continued: “Usually for people who have that weight to lose it can happen quite dramatically, quite quickly. But it’s absolutely done safely, nothing faddy or starvation or deprivation happening here,”

Freer tells clients the importance of making their meals from scratch and putting a lot of natural, fresh produce into their diet.

Charlotte Crosby
One of the famous Geordie Shore weight loss success stories, Charlotte dropped an astonishing 2-and-a-half stone, going from a size 16 to a size 6.

Charlotte has opened up about the secrets to her weight loss, saying: "I just eat healthy and I don't over-indulge like I used to."

"I try and do my DVD at least four times a week and I see my personal trainer maybe once a week if I'm not too busy," she said.

Charlotte admits she still loves her McDonald's on cheat days but doesn't over-eat anymore.

Charlotte's fitness DVD 3 Minute Belly Blitz is available now.

Snooki
Snooki dropped down to 99 pounds in November, less than two months after giving birth. 99 pounds is a healthy weight for the petite 4'8" Jersey Shore star.

Her trainer previously opened up and said that she was decreasing her carbs and overall calorie intake. She was also spending a lot of time in the gym.

He explained: "We're also doing plyometrics, cardio, etc. Right now it's all really geared for weight loss, then she wants to focus on lean muscle mass once she's married."

Michelle Keegan
Michelle definitely has one of the most desirable figures going, and it appears a lot of it is thanks to the SoulMateFood delivery service. This allows you to create your own healthy menus which are then delivered to your front door. The 6-day meal plan costs £150.

Michelle also opened up about the gym: "I try and go to the gym as much as I can".

"It could be three times a week or not at all one week, but I don't punish myself if I don't go," she added.

After Lauren Goodger's previous struggles with weight, we are delighted at how well she is currently doing.

Earlier this year, Lauren expressed how upset she was about unflattering pictures taken of her while she was on holiday in Egypt.

Lauren said: "I’m too upset and embarrassed to look at those photos of me in a bikini taken on holiday in Egypt. They make me feel humiliated – they’re horrendous!"

Now Lauren has taken the step to get her weight loss back on track. The former TOWIE star has been posting photos of herself to Instagram, and she is looking gorgeous.

She started a weight loss plan last month and has been hitting the gym a lot. She has become more toned and it is clear in her defined cheek bone selfies that the pounds are quickly dropping off of her.

Last week, she captioned one of her pictures: "I'm going bring you on my journey .. But one thing girls.. skinny doesn't mean FIT something you can't deny… I'd rather be fit and healthy any day".

Lauren posted the above photo to Instagram on Thursday before setting off on holiday. In her latest column Lauren wrote: "It'll be the first time I'll have been in a bikini since those pictures of me in Egypt earlier this year."

"I'm not nervous at all because I know I'm looking and feeling better than I did then. I'm looking forward to feeling the sun on my skin and getting a real tan," she added.

What an inspiration, good job, Lauren!

There's no denying that Ariana Grande has drastically slimmed down over the last two years, but her appearance at last night's Grammys sparked fresh concern for viewers.

The 21-year-old took to the red carpet before last night's ceremony wearing a chic white Versace floor-length gown, but it was her alarmingly thin frame that had some people talking.

Many on Twitter were quick to comment on the fact that Ariana looked "scary skinny" and "too thin":

The Problem singer openly admitted in 2013 that she had been making a concerted effort to lose weight, opening up about her decision to her fans on Tumblr. "Yes, I lost a bit of weight last year. It's because I stopped eating junk food and started making healthy choices. I was happy with the way I was before and I'm still happy now! Just healthier!"

Although she was never overweight, it's clear that the former Disney Channel actress' shape has changed dramatically since 2012:

"The reason why I lost so much weight as I did is because I used to live on junk food," said Ariana. "So I drastically changed my eating habits, started excising daily, and I'm all around a healthier me… I just wasn't taking care of myself at all. I was making really poor choices… This is about making sure the foods you put in your body will nourish you and be put to good use."

We're glad to her that Ariana is taking a healthy approach, but we hope she's looking after herself too.

If you're struggling to drop those excess pounds you put on over Christmas, it could be what you're eating rather than how much that's the problem.

Choosing larger portions of certain foods is far more beneficial to weight loss than starving your body by skipping meals or eating less.

Here are a few superfoods that could help to boost your metabolism and kick-start your weight loss journey…

1. Kale
Kale was the buzzy food of 2014, and for good reasons too. This leafy green is packed with filling fibre, but is lower in calories, and is full of amino acids which give your body a natural "pick me up" after eating. Win!

2. Lentils
Adding lentils to salads, soups or even pasta can help prevent the insulin spikes which are a key cause of excess abdominal fat. Cook them from scratch or choose the tinned variety for easy preparation.

3. Goji Berries
These tiny, tangy berries are proven to curb hunger – and they're low in calories too. Take a handful as a snack or use them as a topping on your morning granola or porridge.

4. Almond Butter
Spread this on toast or mix into porridge or a fruit salad to stop blood sugar surges and prevent you craving sweet foods.

5. Avocado
Yes, avocado has a high fat content but it's precisely that factor that makes it a key weight loss food. Avocados contain heart healthy monounsaturated fats which help you to feel more satisfied than other fruit and veg do.

6. Green tea
Drinking 2-3 cups of green tea a day is believed to curb appetite and boost your metabolism. If you can't stomach plain green tea, add a squeeze of lemon or go for the citrus-flavoured teabags.

Big Brother star Josie Gibson may have turned her weight loss into a successful business plan with her new fitness website, but she said it didn't do much for her personal life.

The TV presenter, who featured in the 2010 series of Big Brother, dropped from 16 stone to 10 stone back in 2013, but says she was happy to gain some weight back as her fiancé Luke Sanwo likes her curves.

"A couple of years ago he went right off me because I'd lost too much weight and he said my face looked like I was on drugs," Josie said.

Harsh, much?!

The 30-year-old regained around 9 lbs of weight and muscle mass last year, leaving her with her current, enviably toned figure.

She says her weight loss and fitness regime was spurred on by some unflattering bikini shots of her which surfaced online. The star was shocked by the images, calling herself a "beast" and deciding to go on an extreme health kick.

Last year Josie released her own diet book, and has now set up a website to help slimmers stay on track.

We do admit that she's looking fab, but we hope she realises that weight and appearance aren't everything!

With so many health and fitness plans out there all about listening to your body and ignoring the scales, it's surprising to hear that weighing yourself regularly could actually be beneficial.

A recent study published by the Public Library of Science showed that people who weighed themselves more frequently while dieting appeared to drop more pounds. The study tracked the daily habits of 40 overweight adults who were trying to lose weight, taking note of how many pounds they dropped during the study and how often they stepped on the scales.

Those who checked their weight more often actually slimmed down more than those who left it more than a week to do so.

Of course, stepping on the scales is not going to aid your body's fat-burning capabilities (we wish), but by frequently tracking your weight you are more likely to make healthier choices to keep things in check.

While it might seem like a great idea to check your weight once or even twice a day, it's important to remember that our weight can fluctuate by around 3 – 5 pounds depending on what time of the day we weigh ourselves, where we are in our menstrual cycle, and if we have eaten any high salt foods which can cause water retention.

If you do plan on checking your weight daily, to jump on the scales at the same time every day, so that you have a regular benchmark by which to track your weight changes.

Ever notice that if you try to recreate a restaurant dish at home, the results are never quite as tasty? It's probably because you're putting in normal amounts of salt, butter, sugar and other ingredients, rather then loading them up for flavour.

Even the healthiest of restaurants have certain items that are going to wreak havoc with your diet. The basic rule of thumb when dining out on a diet is to look for large servings of protein like chicken or fish, prepared in a healthy manner. For sides, opt for crunchy vegetable-based dishes rather than white carbs like bread and chips.

As well as that though, there are certain words and phrases that should trigger alarm bells when choosing a healthy meal. Watch out for the following buzzwords next time you're dining out!

1. "Creamy"
What's the best way to make a soup or sauce creamy? You've guessed it – by adding cream or milk. Diet disaster. Even vegan substitutes like coconut milk and cashew milk are high in fat, so be aware when ordering.

2. "Vegan"
Certain vegan and vegetarian foods like quorn and tofu are often used as meat substitutes. As they are naturally lower in fat and sodium than things like red meat or chicken, chefs will have to add in salt and other products to boost flavour. So if that seitan tastes AMAZING compared to when you tried it at home, there's your answer!

3. "Organic" and "locally sourced"
Yes, organic foods are not genetically modified, but they are still the same basic foods. The same goes for locally sourced products. That asparagus spear might contain more nutrients as it's been grown just down the road rather than being flown across the globe, but if it's been pan fried in butter and coated in salt before reaching your plate, it's still going to contain the same amount of fat.

4. "Pan-fried" or "skillet-fried"
The bad news – fried means fried, no matter what type of container it's in!

5. "Gluten-free"
If you're coeliac or have an intolerance to gluten, obviously this is by far the healthiest menu choice for you to keep your digestive system working smoothly. But if you're choosing a gluten-free dish to avoid carbs, beware. Gluten-free foods like rice still pack in a fair amount of carbohydrates.

6. "Low-fat" or "fat-free"
Manufacturers have to add something to ensure your fat-free food still tastes good. More often then not, it's sugar. Be aware that many "high-fat" foods like avocado and olive oil actually contain healthy sources of fat so are not to be avoided.

7. "Glazed," "Sticky" and "Honey dipped"
Yes, honey or maple syrup might seem like a better option than refined sugar, but it's still going to pack a calorific punch. When it comes to glazes like teriyaki or BBQ, it's best to ask your waiter what the sauce is actually made from.

Actress Hilary Duff has opened up about the pressure she felt as a teen to stay thin, and her obsessive battle with her weight.

The former Disney star revealed she was "way too skinny" in the early days of her career.

"When I was 17, I weighed, like, 98 pounds," she admitted to Health magazine. "I was totally obsessed with everything I put in my mouth."

The actress also confessed that her strict diet eventually caused her health to suffer in different ways. "My body wasn't that healthy—my hands would cramp up a lot because I wasn't getting the nutrition I needed."

Hilary has dealt with her teenage body image struggles in previous interviews, saying she resorted to living on steamed veg and grilled chicken to stay thin enough for the cameras.

The 27-year-old says she wishes she hadn't focused so much on her looks and weight, and had just been content with her body as it was. "That constant pressure of wanting something different than I had? I regret that," she admitted.

Despite her more positive outlook on weight and health these days, the Lizzie McGuire star says that she is still affected by media pressure, especially since becoming a mum to son Luca in 2012. "Everyone was so hard on me because it took me a year and a half to get my body back," she revealed.

"The second I had Luca, I went to go get my hair blown out at the salon… Then they're like, 'Hilary Debuts Her Post-Baby Body!' I was like, I'm not debuting s**t right now. I'm just going on an errand run! There is way too much pressure on women these days."

Like many women, Hilary admitted she still struggles with those stubborn few pounds. "I feel like I'm always in a 5-pound battle, because being 5 feet 2, everything is going to show on me," she said.

Glad to hear we aren't the only ones with body woes sometimes – it's great to hear a celeb being honest for once!

No matter how healthy you eat, a sluggish metabolism will still limit the amount of calories your body burns for energy, slowing down weight loss.

Some people are lucky to have a super-speedy metabolism, but for those of us who don't, it's important to give things a kick start whenever we can.

You don't need to make any drastic changes to boost your metabolism – a few small things here and there will get things moving nicely!

Here are a few tricks to keep in mind…

1. Get a good cardio workout
Some tough aerobic exercise two or three times a week for 45 minutes is all it takes to keep your metabolism ticking along. Your body will keep burning calories at a higher rate for up to 14 hours after one exercise session – you can't say no to a perk like that! So head out for a run or a cycle or hop up on the treadmill to get your pulse racing!

2. Add intervals to your workout
Switching up the intensity of your workout can make a huge difference to your body's calorie-burning power. Run or cycle at a solid speed for two minutes, with a minute's slow running in between, and repeat. Increase the length of the faster intervals as you get fitter. This way, you're really getting the most out of that 45 minutes of exercise!

3. Eat breakfast!
There is just no excuse to skip breakfast – even a piece of fruit on the go is better than nothing. Your metabolism slows down over night to conserve energy while you're not eating, so a meal within an hour of waking will get things going again.

4. Eat something small before bed
We know late-night eating goes against all the weight loss propaganda, but a small snack is enough to regulate your blood sugar before you sleep. Many nutritionists recommend eating a teaspoon of almond butter just before sleep, so that you wake up feeling energised the next day.

5. Add some spice to your food
Cayenne pepper is the weight loss wonder food – a sprinkle over your meal is all that's needed to raise your body's temperature and in turn kick up your metabolic rate. Other warming spices like cinnamon serve a similar purpose!

6. Eat more dairy
The calcium in dairy products like yoghurt and cheese really helps your body's calorie burning efforts. A couple of portions of low-fat dairy each day are all you need.

7. Take a stroll
Sitting still for an hour or more at a time is a surefire way to reduce your metabolic rate. A lunchtime stroll outside or even moving from your desk to get a glass of water is enough to get things going again.

8. Drink more green tea
Skip the Barry's and go for some green tea instead – it's full of fab antioxidants called catechins which can raised your metabolic rate by up to 4% per day. It's a proven weight-loss tool too. If you don't like the taste, opt for a lemon or mint flavoured green tea instead.

If you're trying to drop a few pounds, a simple tip is just to skip the fad diets and stock up on non-processed, wholesome food that'll keep you full and boost your metabolism.

Some foods can even do a bit of the work for you when it comes to losing weight. Here are a few to include in your "Christmas party dress" diet….

1. Mushrooms
These cute little vegetables really pack a nutritional punch – and they help to regulate blood sugar too, meaning your body can maintain a healthy weight more easily and can endure exercise for longer. Forget the Lucozade Sport and cook yourself up some of these bad boys!

2. Eggs
Eggs are a great breakfast option that will leave you feeling full right up until lunch. They're also a great addition to salads for a lunchtime meal that won't have you craving snacks later.

3. Apples
Fibre is the name of the game if you're trying to avoid late afternoon hunger pangs, and apples are full of the stuff! They're also a great energising food to eat first thing in the morning.

4. Porridge
The slow-release carbohydrates in porridge oats mean you won't be looking for a bar of chocolate or a biccie come 11am. Top your bowl with berries, seeds and nuts for an even healthier morning meal.

5. Almonds
Raw almonds are the dieter's best friend – they're a great quick fix for hunger pangs. Try to limit yourself to a handful – chew them slowly to let your brain register the feeling of fullness.

6. Broccoli
This low-calorie veg is full of fibre, and works great as a substitute for other high-fat side dishes. Swap your chips or mash for broccoli and other cooked veg once or twice a week and you'll soon notice you feel less bloated and more energised.

Missy Elliot has made her first public appearance since the summer and her new slimmer figure has hit headlines everywhere.

The singer, songwriter and rapper performed at Alexander Wang’s H&M Collection launch in New York when she posted a photo to Twitter, writing: Just got off stage thank @ALEXANDERWANGNY and @hmusa for having me perform I enjoyed.”

Missy was diagnosed with Graves’ disease back in 2008, an autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, which in turn can affect metabolism.

She spent much of 2008-2011 focusing on her health, speaking about the disease back in 2011, she said: “I feel great. Under my doctor’s supervision, I’ve been off medication for about a year and I’m completely managing the condition though diet and exercise.”
