In 2011, Ireland was the first country in Europe to celebrate Latvian Culture, and culture enthusiasts are continuing to promote the diverse and rich heritage of the country this weekend.

Latvian Culture Day is kicking of this Sunday, in Meeting House Square on East Essex Street with a huge festival paying homage to the nation.

Starting off with an opening ceremony at 12.30pm, festival goers will be introduced to the simple country cooking that Latvia is famous for.

Latvian traditional sourdough and rye bread, smoked meat and poultry, traditional pastries, sweets and herbal teas will all be on offer on the day.

The festival will also showcase handmade candles cosmetics, hand bags and jewellery which hail from the nation.

There will also be traditional Latvian folk song and dance performances in national costume.

33 groups from Ireland, UK, Latvia, Belgium will be in attendance, with guests from the Russian and Chinese communities in Ireland.

Feeling like up-skilling yourself?

There will also be a series of workshops, including traditional instrument making, games and food tastings, encouraging people to immerse themselves in Latvian culture.

It sounds like a pretty perfect way to spend a Sunday if you ask us.

There will be a number of workshops with various artists at IMMA, and free entry to all exhibits over the weekend.

'We’re really excited to launch the very first Culture Date with Dublin 8 festival and our aim for this year is to engage with the people who live and work in the area and to encourage them to explore what is on their doorstep,' said Grace McEvoy, Project Manager of Culture Date with Dublin 8.

Love gin?

Well apparently, so does the rest of the country, because there are a number of gin festivals being held on the Emerald Isle this summer.

Here's a low down of all the best ones we have found:

1. Irish Gin & Tonic Festival

The Irish Gin & Tonic Festival is returning to Ireland this summer.

Running from June 25 to July 1, the nationwide celebration of some of Ireland’s best gin is back.

Any licensed bar, restaurant or hotel in Ireland can get involved by showcasing one of the many festival Irish gins served with a tonic of their choice for the week of the festival, and registration for the festival is free, so encourage your favourite bar to get involved.

2. Ginfusion

Ginfusion is coming to Dublin, and will be residing at the Bernard Shaw.

Celebrating and showcasing a host of different ways to enjoy the versatile beverage, the event will run across four days and nights on the June bank holiday weekend.

And best of all? Admission is FREE.

3. The Burren Slow Food Festival

So we all love gin, but we also have a penchant for cheese, and this festival brings the two together.

Taking place on May 12 to May 14, the festival promises to bring together food producers, chefs and writers for a weekend of talks, demonstrations and workshops.

4. Ranelagh Gin Fest

If you have a hankering for gin ASAP and can't wait until summer, then the Ranelagh Gin Fest, on April 28 to May 1 could be for you.

As well as being located in one of Dublin's most pleasant areas, the G&Ts at this festival are far from overpriced, at a very reasonable €6.00.

Hosted by The Hill pub, there are a number of delicious concoctions to try.

This year's Galway Food Festival is on the horizon, and it looks like it's set to be a delicious feast for culinary connoisseurs and food fans alike.

The festival will run over the Easter weekend, from Thursday April 13 to Monday April 17.

"Galway is home to many different communities, both local and international. In an age of increased migration, we are witness to so many new people arriving in Galway bringing with them their own food culture."

"It is central that we marry these global cultures with our own in order a secure a brighter future for food," said the festival organisers.

A number of the city's cafes are also on board, including the ever-popular Coffeewerk + Press and Caprice.

Over 100 food-based events will be happening over the weekend, all focused on the theme of food and community.

“Community and food are so closely linked as every culture and community forms a large part of their identity through food whether during celebration, through tradition and history or simply daily dining rituals," said owner of Builín Blasta Café and Bakery in Spiddal, Heather Flaherty.

Temperatures this weekend are set to hit 19 degrees, and there is no way we're going to let this fine weather pass us by.

There are plenty of amazing things to do in the capital and beyond while the sun is out.

Here are a few of our recommendations:

5. Eatyard

If you haven't already had the chance to hit up Eatyard, then this weekend is the perfect opportunity.

The foodie festival has a vast range of delicious food stalls ready to be plundered, with everything from delicious sweet potato fries at Box Burger to the insanely poplar bubble waffles at Bubble Waffle Factory.

4. Dine al fresco in the park

Ireland has plenty of beautiful parks that are well worth a visit on a sunny weekend like this.

Grab a few nibbles from the supermarket and lay out a blanket to sunbathe, because this great weather isn't going anywhere.

This is ideal if you have the misfortune of working this weekend, as lunching in the park is the perfect way to see a bit of sun, even if it is just for an hour.

3. City Kayaking

City Kayaking Dublin gives sporting enthusiasts the opportunity to explore the river Liffey and see the entire city from a very unique vantage point.

If you don't happen to be in the capital this weekend, there are plenty of other companies around Ireland that provide delightful kayaking experiences in rural rivers.

2. Pints. That's all.

Park yourself at a comfortable table outside your favourite pub and people watch with your favourite drink in hand.

After all, when else do we get the opportunity to don a pair of sunglasses and drink in the sun?

1. Head to the beach

This one is pretty obvious, but Ireland has so many beautiful beaches that don't get half as much use as they should thanks to our usually lacklustre weather.

Bring the sun cream and some change for a 99 and you're all set.

What is it about Irish dads and their ability to turn your mood from neutral to THE HEIGHT OF STRESSED in two seconds flat?

They seem to exercise this power most often when the TV is involved, especially when you're just trying to binge-watch Orange Is The New Black in peace.

"Who's yer wan, at all? Is she off to a fancy dress party in that get-up? Why are there no MEN in this show?"

The folks over at The Irish Take have captured the intense annoyance of watching TV when your dad's in the room, with this epic video.

It's dubbed over a clip of Yvonne Connolly cooking on TV3's  Seven O'Clock Show, and it's pure genius (though a bit NSFW).

When you watch TV with your Dad……

Posted by The Irish Take on Wednesday, 23 March 2016

"She made a f**king b***cks of the kitchen altogether now, she's made a right f**king mess."

Yeah, cheers dad, you can go now. Seriously. GO.
