The last great divide…just how DO you pronounce the word ‘scone’?

It’s one of the great debates of our time, and judging by the following map, it looks like we’re not going to be settling on the correct pronunciation of the word ‘scone’ any time soon.

People tend to teeter along the line between a word that rhymes with ‘cone’ or ‘gone’, and it seems as though it's all determined by where you live.

Some genius has created a colour-coded map of the Republic of Ireland and the UK, documenting what we refer to our favourite sweet-bread treat as.

According to the map, the more orange your area is, the greater the number of people who pronounce the word like ‘gone’; and if you’re living in a largely blue area, you’re more likely to pronounce it like ‘cone’.

Checking out our spot on the map, in Dublin, it looks like we’re set as a ‘cone’ area, while you’re likely to get a dirty look if you pronounce it any other way in the likes of Kerry, Clare and Galway, too.

It’s not that big a surprise to see that the majority of the United Kingdom enjoys an afternoon tea treat that rhymes with ‘gone’ – that’s how it’s always been in the period dramas!

Right, now that that’s sorted, we can get back to global warming and Trump.
