The sporting and showbiz world was surprised to hear that Cristiano Ronaldo and Irina Shayk had called an end to their long-term relationship earlier this week.

It would seem that the split came down to Irina reportedly deciding not to attend Cristiano’s mum, Dolores’ 60th birthday party. A Portuguese newspaper has alleged that the footballer arranged a surprise bash for his mum – and that Irina flat refused to attend.

It is thought the incident was simply the final straw in a tense few months in the couple’s relationship. Rumours of a break-up began to circulate when Irina unfollowed Cristiano on Twitter and did not make an appearance at the Ballon d’Or nor was she mentioned in her boyfriend of five years’ acceptance speech.
