Twitter responds to Lauer’s apology, and they are not impressed
Earlier today, disgraced NBC news anchor, Matt Lauer, issued an apology after allegations of sexual harassment were made against him by female colleagues.
Expressing remorse for his conduct, the Today host said he struggled to find words sufficient enough to communicate his regret.
"There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions. To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry," he said at the beginning of his statement.
Allowing himself a moment of introspection, the host then said he needed to take time to consider his behaviour and its implications.
"Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul searching and I’m committed to beginning that effort. It is now my full time job," he said.
However, social media users are far from impressed with his attempt at an apology, with many asserting he was sorry for getting caught, not sorry for his behaviour.
I don’t even want to read this, because there is no “excuse” to sexually torturing someone. I hope and pray that one of his family members advises him to seek mental help. Unless, of course, he gets that in a mental lockdown facility. #ConfessAndRepent #MattLauer

If he were sorry, he would have stopped the behavior and made amends to those he had wronged over the years. He is sorry he got caught. #MattLauer https://t.co/df36Pd0Byj

Of course #MattLauer is sorry, sorry he got caught. And this isn’t just about what he’s been doing, it’s who he is.

If you have to do some "soul searching" so as not to be a sexual predator, you, in fact, do not have a soul to search. #MattLauer

@MSNBC Funny how these guys only realize they have done wrong and feel sorrow AFTER they get fired! #MattLauer

#MattLauer Why do these buffoons bother to apologize after years of disgusting behavior; as if the public Doesn't know that they are only sorry to have been caught.

Are you ashamed and embarrassed because you got caught? I’m embarrassed how many times you reported on other allegations calling them disturbing knowing you were doing it, too. #MattLauer
