Zayn breaks silence at first public appearance since departure

Apart from issuing his initial statement following his decision to leave the band, Zayn Mailk formerly of One Direction, has kept fairly schtum about the whole thing.

While Directioners took to Twitter to voice their distress and other members of the industry also weighed in on the 22-year-old’s departure, Zayn himself continued just being, well, Zayn himself- Really, really quiet.

Until now, that is!

At last night's 5th annual  British Asian Awards held in London's Grovesnor House Hotel, the singer paid tribute to his former bandmates while collecting the gong for Outstanding Contribution to Music.

Before giving a shout-out to Harry and co. the quietest member of the world-famous boyband acknowledged that he wasn't one for drawn out speeches, saying: "I'm not really a guy of many words."

Despite this admission, Zayn gave a touching speech which honoured the time he spent in the band, saying: "Some of the things that we did will stay with me for the rest of my life."

Lest there be any question over whether Zayn and the four lads had fallen out prior to his decision to quit 1D, the Bradford native was sure to thank the lads for all the good times.

In  show of brotherly love, Zayn said: "I'd also like to take this moment to thank four of the best guys that I ever met whilst being in the band and doing all the amazing things that I did."

In a nod to the next chapter of his life, Perrie's fiancé finished with a toast, saying: "Here's to the future"

Aw, Zayn!
